I'm planning a half-destination wedding on the beautiful island of Oahu - imagine a plethora of movies, art and games; savory Hawaiian food; blended Chinese and Japanese cultural details; lush, fragrant tropical flowers and all the air conditioning a NorCal native could want! Cakie! - Hats

February 15th, 2010 @ 1:34 pm by Mrs. Sewing

I’ve talked a little bit about overall cake designs, but today let’s just concentrate on the fun part - the topper.

Pretty much anything you can think of can be made into a cake topper. Here’s my short list:

-Custom wooden people

Cakie! - Hats : wedding cake decor Woodca
I picked these little guys up at Michaels for about a dollar or so. It would be simple enough to paint them into us Sewings, and might end up looking something like this:

-Anime figurines

Oh, there’s ton of potential with figurines. (Inserting jargon here: ) Link and Zelda, Shinji and Asuka/Rei/Misato/Kaoru, Lelouch and CC… somehow I don’t think we really identify with the more iconic “couples”. I think we’re more along the lines of Otani and Risa, or Nodame and Chiaki. Maybe we’ll go back to Tamama and Keroro, even.

How would this look on a cake? I bought these guys for $5 from a convention a few years ago.

-Flowers

We can’t go wrong here. A pretty bunch of flowers on top of a cake can be a gorgeous thing. I’m not sure how it really speaks to us Sewings, though. We might need to be a bit more personalized.

-Little IC people

Cakie! - Hats : wedding cake decor 1364146

I had this weird thought of using big, fatty IC chips and making them look like little people-bugs by bending the pins into feet and hands (Like the “bugs” above, only standing up like “people”). Draw a face on with paint, and voila? Unfortunately, I doubt I can find chips big enough, and we might run into the “contains lead” problem again.

-Hawaiian Salt & Pepper Shakers

This seems to be the standard cake topper for the Hawaiian bride. It’s so cute! But it’s not really indicative of Mr. Sewing and me. Neither of us are even close to being that tan. *sigh*.

What kind of hat does your cake get to wear?

I went with the little wood people! It was so amazingly simple and surprisingly fun, I actually need some excuses to make some more!

I don’t even know if I’ll use them on my cake. They might just be a nice little addition to my guestbook table!

Actually, I don’t think we’re having a cake topper, but love the little wooden dowel people - they’re cute!

We are doing cupcakes and having one mini cake on top for us to cut… not sure about a topper- it might be over board, but I love the lil wooden people- I think it would be adorable living on a bookshelf for the rest of our days

Mine is going hatless!

I love all of your ideas. If I was going to have a cake-topper, I would definitely go with the wooden people, but it sounds like anime characters would be most ‘personalized’ for you guys.

Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I bought a vintage topper on etsy that kind of reminds me of my folks’ cake topper. They laughed at my 1975 taste, but I think it’s timeless and cute. But I’m also obsessed with little wooden toppers and little birdie toppers- I have a plan to decorate the dessert table with a few different cake toppers to satisfy my indecision.

Those little wooden figurines are so cute! We’re debating between fresh flowers, a rhinestone monogram, and a “love” topper. I’m really liking the wooden people though. I think you should definitely do little anime figures for your toppers!

I’m planning on personalized toppers. Might enlist family help to get them done. lol But we’ve goneover a few options…like..okay I don’t remember which bee at the moment but they had an awesome ewok cake with Han & Leia…we considered something that. lol Recently, WoW characters have been a possibilty too :-D Guess we’ll see lol

The anime characters are adorable! A friend of mine is doing that as well. I am in the process of collecting figurines that look like each of our cats (um, we have 5. Yes, 5. They were all accidents.) to put on various tiers of the cake (or at the base…haven’t decided quite yet; have a meeting for our cake this week!).
