Ms Potato Chips's Picture
Ms. Potato Chips, Boston/Narragansett RI Age and Occupation: 29, PhD Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Personal Trainer/Business Owner/Physical Therapy Assistant Engagement Date: January 1, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Narragansett Towers About Me: A semi-professional bookworm, if I could be a literary character I’d be a cross between Jo March and Jane Eyre, only better accessorized and much lazier. My hobbies include sleeping in, seasonal brews, running, Trader Joe’s, and watching Unwrapped and Good Eats with Mr. Potato Chips. I harbor an irrational fear of tulle, crafts, things that are fussy, and overuse of the phrase "Your Special Day". After a year or seven together, down the aisle we go, slouching toward adulthood and planning a Rhodie party with equal parts whimsy, cheer, and pizza.
About Ms Potato Chips

Registering is Awesome

February 15th, 2010 @ 5:16 pm by Ms Potato Chips

How awesome is registering?

We’ve been together seven years, have lived together for five, but have never been able to splurge on kitchen items. We manage with a hodge podge of hand-me-downs, cast-offs, and yard sale finds and it’s fine. It’s totally fine. We make do.

But. Oh my, there is nothing like the heft of a glossy Le Creuset cover or the smooth curved porcelain of matching mugs and saucers. I love the calm, ordered aura of a Williams-Sonoma store at noon on a Tuesday, when I can run my hands over their nubbly textiles and stroke the cool stainless steel espresso maker.

Ooof. Are you getting hot under the collar? Am I? (I am.)

The point is, it doesn’t even matter if no one buys us these gifts. The experience of yielding the scanner gun was unduly satisfying and climatic in and of itself.

Registering is Awesome : wedding registry 1 1

To guide us in our registry-choosing, we sought the help of our buddy Alton Brown, via his book Gear For Your Kitchen.

In addition to providing recommendations for both must-haves and splurges, Mr. Brown describes five approaches to gathering kitchen items, all of which can certainly be applied to registering:

  1. The Bob Vila Approach: Own a special tool for every possible job and a darned nice case to carry it in. (Down vest optional).
  2. The MacGyver Approach: Use your understanding of physics, metallurgy, chemistry, mechanical and electrical engineering to make whatever you need out of a coffee can, a length of bungee cords, and a road flare. (Mullet hairdo optional.)
  3. The Fred Sanford Approach: More is better… end of story. (Beat-up old truck optional.)
  4. The Robin Leach Approach: Expensive is better… end of story. (Bizarre accent optional.)
  5. Jack Benny Approach: Cheaper is better… end of story. (Violin optional.)

Heretofore, we’ve been operating under the Jack Benny/MacGyver approach. We’re hoping to gradually veer towards the Bob Vila Approach, but with as many “multi-taskers” as possible. (Because that’s what Alton would do.)

Which approach did you take? Did you find the registering experience as wonderful and exciting as I did?

I love Alton! And I loved registering! We’ve splurged on a few things here and there, but there’s definitely much more to be had!

Oh, and we’re also taking the Bob Villa approach. I love cooking gadgets!

Once we actually get around to registering, we’re going to do the MacGyver approach… I don’t like alot of clutter, and we’re going to be moving like, 5 times in the next 10 years.

I have to admit I was a little bummed that by registering for a honeymoon we didn’t get to do the scanner thing. So when my aunt offered to host a shower, I was super excited to have an excuse to make a little trip to Target and whip out the handy dandy scanner! FI hates the idea of bringing more stuff into our already jam packed house, so I promised him that after the shower, I’ll take everything off the list except the stuff we really need, so hopefully that will point people back to the honeymoon registry.

I like those descriptions! I think we are going w/a similar mixed Bob/MacGuyver approach. It was a little overwhelming but definitely fun, and we are still in the process. The lady helping us at Crate & Barrel had a good suggestion: start w/the difficult to decide on items first, because by the end you’ll be out of energy and it will be impossible to decide. That was very helpful.

OMG we also channeled Alton Brown before committing to add something to our registry. Every time I wanted a whatitzmagig Mr. AZ would look at me and ask if Alton would approve.

My finance loved your post, registering just got so much clearer to him. Plus I had HUGE crush on MacGyver back in the day. ;)

We’ve definitely taken the Vila approach… even though we don’t have space for it!

That’s such an adorable picture of you!

We go for the “less is better” approach, seeing as how our kitchen has, like, no storage. I wonder what Alton would call that?

We loved registering too!! I’d love to work up to the Bob Vila approach, but we have a long way to go…we’re MacGyvors living off hand-me-downs and yard sale finds, as well! Can’t wait to have shiny new cookware…

Oh man, I couldn’t help but feel guilty when we started to register. I thought “all these expensive gifts, for us?!”. But I had to let that go and have fun scanning, if we don’t get it, who cares! And like you, we have been living together for 2 1/2 years already, so we have kitchen basics on our own. I am also contemplating a honeymoon registry. Those are fun!

We haven’t registered yet, but I’m totally going to try to register for only what we NEED. We’ve been living together for 2 years and have some things, but I’d definitely like to upgrade some of them!

Those scanners are so addictive! We loved playing with it in Crate and Barrel. It’s fun to see all of the stuff you could use/want to use!
