Fall is my favorite season (which is why we are marrying in September), but I love a warm summer day and the Colorado mountains in the winter. About Mrs. Argyle

My (New) Last Name

February 16th, 2010 @ 9:51 am by Mrs. Argyle

It is no secret to my friends and family that I like to channel my inner Martha Stewart. I like crafting and cooking, and coming up with all these tidbits for around-the-house tips and tricks. Hell, in college, I was voted the “Next Martha Stewart” by a fantastic sorority sister (whom I love dearly, you know who you are).

So, when Mr. Argyle proposed, my closest friends DIED of laughter because of what my married last name would be. It could not be a more perfect fit (cliche, I know). In September, my last name will change, to Stewart. Yup, you heard me right. My new last name will be Stewart and I will love every second of it for many reasons (with the top one being that it is the last name of my future husband, and the second being that I get to share my last name with THE Martha Stewart).

Flashback: Several years ago, a friend of my mother’s gave me the nickname of “Martha”. And, a bunch of us gave her the nickname of Paula Deen because of her Southern roots and Southern-style cooking (the woman makes some awesome chicken ‘n dumplings).

Back to today:

Last summer, we headed over to “Paula’s” house for our traditional 4th of July celebration at her house with a bunch of close family friends. She greeted me with a HUGE hug and said “Hi, Martha!” I of course hugged her back and said, “And in a little over a year, my new last name will be Stewart.” I swear she about died. No joke. Her cheeks turned red and her eyes welled up with tears. I couldn’t figure out if she was sad, but it became immediately obvious that she was just plain thrilled. It was a very heart-warming and funny moment to say the least.

The moral of this story is the fact that many brides-to-be waver back and forth between whether or not they want to change their last name, hyphenate, or do something clever. I honestly cannot wait to change my last name, and for good reason.

Have any of you had a hard time deciding whether or not to change your last name? It seems more and more women these days are taking a non-traditional view on this and I would love to know how everyone feels!

@Miss Frozen Yogurt: The funny thing is I’m hardly crafting anything for the wedding, other than designing a lot of details and paper goods. But I can surely help teach you to craft!

I have known all along that I wanted to drop my maiden name and use my new last name. I am much more excited about that then getting rid of my middle name and moving my last name over one, plus, my maiden name is very common. However, I realize that I have a lifetime of mispronunciations to look forward to. My FI’s last name is not that difficult (I don’t think) but for some reason people are ALWAYS adding or dropping letters in it to make it different. Oh well!

@NurseK: I have a friend whose husband’s last name people mispronounce all the time, but I think it’s pretty easy!

That’s so cute! My maiden name is like John Smith, and everyone asks me - are you related to so and so - uhhh.. NOPE! So I was excited to get to change it up with my new last name! Glad you’re excited about yours!

such a cute story!! Like you, I can’t wait to change my last name. I was never particularly fond of my last name growing up. And I love the idea of changing my name to my future husband’s name because, in my mind, it helps to give the sense of being a family and starting our new lives together.

Very sweet story! I have a hard time because my last name is very unique but LONG and it means a lot to me and to my dad to have my title in front of it…I love the idea of a last name unifying a family but I also don’t want to completely give mine up…so I’m going to move it to the middle but continue to use it professionally. I think.

Stewart is my last name now… I’m sad to be losing it, (even though my new last name is awesome!) but at least someone will be gaining it back! (c:

Now that I am in the midst of wedding planning and contacting vendors, it is such a pain to spell out and repeat my last name over and over. It has really got me thinking about that special day when my last name will go from 9 letters to 4!

I have ALWAYS known that I was going to take my husband’s name, ever since I was a child. I can’t wait either!!
