A Love Affair with J Mendel

A Love Affair with J Mendel : wedding bridesmaid dress 14 1

J Mendel Crystal Blue Gown Spring 2010

Sigh. Isn’t this dress to die for? I wish it could be an affordable bridesmaid dress instead of a thousands-of-dollars designer dress. And it’s in my color, too! Because I can’t get enough of the thing, here’s Kate Walsh in the dress at the Emmy Awards:

My favorite bridesmaid dress color is the oft-misunderstood sea glass, a cousin to the color every bridesmaid dreads: sea foam, which Mastercard ever-so-memorably paid tribute to here.

Searching for a bridesmaid’s dress in sizes ranging from 2 to 22 has proven to be one of the most hair-pullingly frustrating experiences of my bridal career. Why, oh, WHY must you stop at size 16, J. Crew? And, oh, your size 18 is so close, Ann Taylor, but no cigar!

It’s left me with very few options that are affordable, and by affordable I mean in the $150-ish range. There’s David’s Bridal and Alfred Angelo, but I just don’t love the colors/styles. Same with Alexia, Aria, and the multitude of others whose websites and salons I’ve scoured. It seems the colors I love are elusive and found in a select few places, read: J Mendel, Priscilla of Boston and Melissa Sweet, among a few others. Here are the colors I lust over, “dream” and “sea glass”:

But unfortunately, after trying on the 20+ styles from MS and PB that come in those colors, I could not find one that would be very flattering on a plus size figure. The fabric was either too clingy or too stiff (taffeta or silk faille) that it ballooned away from the body, which would make even the skinniest stick figure model appear preggers.

The one style that would be flattering doesn’t come in my color, so it would mean going to a seamstress to custom make the dresses, a time consuming and rather unpredictable endeavor.

What about you? Have you had any difficulty outfitting your ‘maids? Any success stories or recommended websites for a wide range of sizes?

Luuv that. Seaglass is one of my colors too–I totally the fine line btwn seaglass and seafoam (i’ve had to wear a seafoam bmaid dress, sigh). Jcrew has a similary color, dusy shale for bmaids. It’s a little darker but it’s close!

Oh god, I have been in love with that J Mendel collection since it came out. That dress is to die for, the yellow ones are to die for, they all are just… to die for.

P.S. We almost did that Melissa Sweet dress in that same color. :p True story. :)

I love a dress with draping! I’m currently looking at Bill Levkoff style 520, I’m not sure if it comes in that color though

Ooooh that J Mendel dress is lovely. One of my friends almost went with a Priscilla of Boston dress because of their ice blue color! In the end, she decided to have a tailor make our dresses - it’s only going to end up being $160 each, so maybe that could actually work?

Oh I’m in love. So dreamy! I bought wavered between 3 dresses, bought and returned set of bm dresses before deciding on the ones that we chose from Anthropologie. There are TOO many options!

We had some problems too since we needed to find dresses from 0 to 22. And one of my BMs is trying to get/planning on being pregnant by the time the wedding rolls around (yay!!). We ended up going with one of the dresses from alfred angelo.

Thanks for your comments! It’s indeed very tough to find a dress in a specific color but in a wide range of sizes…especially when one BM is preggers and won’t know what her post-baby size’ll be.

@Miss Scissors: That’s funny! Isn’t that MS dress gorgeous? Too bad it doesn’t come with that rad black feather pin on the shoulder in the picture!

@Miss Guinea Pig: a tailor would work! It’s a great idea! I found one who could copy the MS dress. Another Bee had used her and gave great reviews. I needed to find the fabric for her, and I went to the LA Fashion District three times with my MS swatch and couldn’t find a match! I was being picky though.

I have actually found dresses now, so keep your eyes peeled for that post!

In case anyone else is having trouble finding BM dresses (or any dresses) Jordan’s Fashions goes from 0-34. They don’t have the color seaglass, from what I can find, but maybe they have something else someone would like.

Such a purdy color! And love the first dress, and don’t despair, with spring around the corner, I have high hopes that you’ll be able to find the perfect dress in the perfect color!
