No Blooms in My Center

February 17th, 2010 @ 3:02 pm by Mrs. Hot Wings

Yup, you heard it. What if I don’t want flowers for our centerpieces? What are our options? I think flowers are pretty, but I don’t like how expensive they can be and the fact that they are cut and so are destined to death. Morbid, isn’t it?

A lot of people have done candles for centerpieces. This makes a great centerpiece, and you have the added bonus of ambiance via soft glowing candlelight.

How about some fruit?

Or some wheat or hay, if you’re going for a more rustic feel?

How about using the favor boxes?

A stack of books?

OK, so which non-floral centerpiece are we thinking about? None of these, actually. I’m thinking of something totally crazy and off the wall, I think. I want it to be practical, elegant, but unique and fun. Do you remember water glass music?

Now think of different drinks in different shades of blues and greens to match our theme (which I’ll disclose in another post. For now think ocean water). And I’ll put drink flags in each drink indicating the types of drink. Maybe we’re looking for a combination of the following pictures:

What do you think? Is it too crazy? Would anyone get it? Do you have any suggestions on making this a reality?

It’s your wedding and you can do what you want to, do what you want to, do what you want to!

I love the idea of doing something different. We’re currently working on that. We’re definitely going to put some books in the mix, but definitely do something you love!

I personally LOVE candles. :)

Speaking as someone who’s not having traditional centerpieces, I love it! But I’m with Sewing…do they get to drink the drinks?

@Miss Sewing: @Miss French Fries: I think I would want people to drink it… so that would mean the centerpiece would end up disappearing, which would be a good thing since we have the large Chinese banquet tables with the lazy susans. So would that work? or just be weird?

I’m not a huge fan of flowers (or the cost of them) either. (I also get a lot of funny looks when I say this to people.) I’m always trying to come up with some fun ideas for a centerpiece. I love love the fruit & the books!

@Miss Hot Wings: actually that makes even more sense now! you’d want to clear the centerpiece off so there’s more room for the food!

i would have loved to just have lots of candles, but the fire code was in my damn way. as for the drinks, that seems really creative and you can definitely play around with it to see what will work for you. will they be large glass holders from which guests can pour their drinks?

@Miss Pug: Ooo like pitchers? I don’t know. I hadn’t thought of that. That’s kind of a neat idea. I need to keep thinking. You’re all so creative.

I love this idea!

We’re doing lanterns as centerpieces, with flower petals scattered around them or small bud vases (so minimal floral). I wanted to do vintage books but as our reception takes place in a library, bookshelves lining almost every wall, I thought it might be overkill.

Ooh, pitchers or vases would be cool. Maybe those long pillar type decanters? I like this idea a lot. I’m planning to use wine bottles, as shades of dark mossy green is sort of my color scheme (along with a little bit of espresso brown, white, and a smidge of pink). I like that they can double as table numbers. I’ll probably put some big tall green planty things in them but I’m in early stages yet!

I think it’s a totally cool and original idea. Just make some cute little signs explaining that they can drink the centerpieces, and you’re golden! I think if there wasn’t a sign, I would be unsure as a guest. Or make your bridal party your covert operatives and scatter them to spread the news ;)

I love your idea…very creative. I am using candle lanterns on every table….and because I am having a candy buffet and won’t be giving individual wedding favors, I will make liitle cards to put in front of every chair for the guest to fill out with “Advice for the Couple”. This gives them something to do while waiting for the wedding party to take pictures and gives us something fun to read after the wedding is over. I am not sure what else I will do with the candle lanterns, but I will think of something.

I briefly considered cabbage centerpieces. I liked the thought… rustic, laidback, cheap… my mom did not. And that was that.

You could totally take this the Alice way and put signs next to them saying drink me.. and with unique containers (i like mason jars, and old milk bottles myself) it would definitely catch the eye!

Totally cute - did you see the Real Simple Weddings magazine (from 2009) idea that recommended using drink dispensers? It was gorgeous and totally rustic chic.

I love your idea! I’m not planning on flowers either. Right now I think our main idea is using masks somehow. Though I do love the books idea :-D
