About Mrs. Ribbons

The Acne Arsenal

February 17th, 2010 @ 11:27 am by Mrs. Ribbons

Now that I’ve hit the four month mark, I’m starting to get more serious about my skin.

Allow me to give you the background on my skin: I started breaking out after I graduated from college last summer and it got pretty ugly. My over the counter products were failing miserably.

Of course, this was all happening when I was unemployed for six months (thank you, recession). I had no idea if I still had health insurance (I did) and we couldn’t afford the expense of going to a dermatologist. So I trudged around DC, poor and zitty.

After becoming gainfully employed though, I made a dermatologist appointment. The doctor described my acne as “mild” (going to disagree there a bit) and prescribed me a retinol and a benzoyl peroxide. Those two things are the paladins of the zit crusade, healing and exorcising my face.

Things have definitely improved in the year I’ve been using the prescriptions, but I still deal with hormonal and stress-related break-outs. So even if you have mild or occasional acne, get thee to a dermatologist and then perhaps try some of these products too!

The Acne Arsenal : wedding beauty 4358528 4358528

Philosophy Purity - Gentle and removes makeup. I found it was way too drying to use an acne-specific cleanser plus topical treatments, so I use this instead. Morning and night.

Neutrogena Deep Clean Gentle Scrub - This is my once-a-day scrub but during the winter, every other day. It has Beta Hydroxy, which prevents pores from clogging and promotes skin shedding. Not too shabby.

Mario Badescu Drying Lotion - If you get a whitehead once in a while, this is probably the only product you need for acne. You apply it at night and the zit will be poofed by morning.

Philosophy Hope in a Jar - It’s a super light moisturizer, absorbs quickly, and leaves my skin feeling smooth.

Mario Badescu Whitening Mask - It sounds a little sketch, right? I use it to gradually fade old acne scars.

Those are my basics. When I’m feeling fancy (read: not being lazy), I include these:

Clinique Clarifying Lotion - Toner. I’m prone to an oily T-zone, so I should really use this. But it’s one extra step at 7 AM I don’t want to take regularly.

Mario Badescu Hyaluronic Eye Cream - I remember to use this about twice a week. Perhaps in 30 years I will regret my eye cream nonchalance.

If I’m leaving the house, I add Clinque Super City Block SPF 40, because I might enjoy being pale.

So if you’re dealing with acne, the best thing I did was visit my doctor. But all of these products have worked really well with my prescriptions.

What are your favorite skin care products, particularly for acne?

I’m also at the 4 month mark. I have broken out due to stress of not having enough money to plan a nice elegant wedding of my dreams. I use proactive it works really well to prevent, but of course you have to use it twice daily with the mask.

I love Origins. I used to break out a lot due to stress, and hormones. Then I have been using a combo of the Checks and Balances, Toner, A perfect World Moisturizer, Charcoal Face Mask (Once a Week) and their Modern Friction 3 times a week. It has cleared my face up considerably! I am totally going to check out that spot zapper thing. (Mario’s) It sound’s amazing!

Thanks for the tips! Does the whitening mask really fade acne scars?

@Mrs. Mouse: Pretty gradually but I have noticed a difference over about a six month period. I only apply it to the areas with scarring, not my whole face. Of course, over six months the scars could fade naturally too :)
@Teaserama: Hm all of those products sound really nice!

I’m totally worried that I’m going to majorly break out as the wedding gets closer since I’m probe to stress break outs too. I think I need to pick up some of this Mario Badescu stuff. My make-up artist told me about it too and says it’s miraculous!

I use proactive, and really like it. I’m in the market for a really good light moisturizer though, so I’ll definitely check out your suggestions!

i’ve had acne for a long time (and my mother’s is as bad as mine - she’s in her 60s, so i think it’s here to stay), and, while i am not a makeup or “regimen” sort of person, i have tried a lot of the basic cleansing products, none of which helped any more than washing my face regularly.

for the last year i have been washing my face daily with baking soda (in the shower ’cause the grit is hard to wash off otherwise) and it has made a *huge* difference - not 100% gone, but a major, major improvement! i’ll have to check out that mario bedescu drying lotion now…

I’ve heard good things about the Mario Badescu stuff in several places now. I might have to give in and try it!

I love the purity facewash, too. The Mario Badescue seems to be on everyone’s short list of miracle cures.

I never had acne on my face in high school, but became the zip queen at about 23. Cetaphil is a life saver and no matter what you think, moisturize. I know you think that your face is already to oily, but if you moisturize regularly, it will actually help to calm things down. Cetaphil makes an antibacterial bar and a great light moisturizer. Also, I have recently started using Clean-ac by Avene and it is really great at controlling breakouts without drying.

I am blessed with blackheads on my nose, whiteheads on my jawline, clogged pores all over my face, and dry skin patches on my nose and forehead. AWESOME.

Lately, to get rid of the dry skin, I’ve been making an exfoliating scrub with 3 tbl olive oil, 2 tbl honey, and 1/4 sugar, mixed well. Using it every night, it lasts me about two weeks. I cleanse my face with a not overly drying cleanser, then rub the concoction all over, paying special attention to my nose and forehead. Then I rinse well. Your skin feels slightly moist as the oil absorbs, but olive oil doesn’t clog your pores. I pat a little benzoyl peroxide on my jawline, then finish up with more moisturizer because my skin is thirsty.

It’s COMPLETELY cleared up my skin (other than some pre-period breakouts). I love it, and it’s so cheap.

I too have acne, and like a lot of the same products, and would add the Aveeno moisturizer with SPF 30 for face - it’s inexpensive and is great for people with combination skin, but are acne prone.

My miracle is tea tree oil, and I would recommend it to everyone–it clears you up without drying you out–seriously it’s AMAZING. Unfortunately for me, my FI has some sort of aversion to the smell, which doesn’t bother me at all, so I’m trying to find other things that work just as well. I think I’m definitely going to look into the Mario Badescu thing. I’m one of the people that’s scared to moisturize for fear of breaking out–so help relieve my fear and tell me a good moisturizer to go with!! Please? I’ve got like 3 months til the wedding and I’d like to be radiant!
