Tips For a Smooth Hair Trial

February 17th, 2010 @ 2:38 pm by Mrs. Nachos

I have yet to have my hair trial and I will be sure to post pics when I do, but for now I wanted to give you all a few tips for getting the just the right look that you want from a stylist’s perspective. Use these tips for both the trial run and the wedding day. And while I’m sure some of them are obvious, some people forget once they’re sitting in the chair.

1. Come with dry dirty hair

Tips For a Smooth Hair Trial : wedding hair trial 113 1

Ok, not that dirty!

Clean hair is very slippery which makes it hard to pin up and create long-lasting curls. If you can stand it, wash your hair the day before, but skip the shampoo the day of. It also blows my mind when a client comes in with freshly washed wet hair before an updo. That extra time needed to blow dry cuts into the stylist’s updo-playtime, silly!

2. Bring all of your possible hair accessories with you

Bring along your veil, tiara, flowers, rhinestones, anything you may want to put in your hair the day of. Even if you bought something along the way but aren’t sure you want to use it, bring it anyway and see if it may work with the style you come up with.

3. Wear a button down or zip-up shirt

(source)

It’s pretty self-explanatory, but sometimes people forget. I actually did a bride’s hair that forgot this and wore a t-shirt the day of her wedding. Luckily it was an old shirt because she later told me that she had her bridesmaid cut it off of her with a scissors when they got home.

4. Bring pictures

(source) modified by me

Most stylists are visual people and sometimes the image you have in your head is hard to articulate. If you like the front of a style in one picture and the back in another, bring both pics and tell your stylist what you do and don’t like about them.

5. Talk about price when you book the appointment

Some salons will charge full price for a trial run. Others may charge less if you book your wedding day appointment. Make sure you find out before your appointment so there are no surprises when you go to pay!

6. If you have to cancel or reschedule, give your stylist lots of notice

We tend to book a large chunk of time for a trial run because we know it could take a few tries to get the look you really want. Time is money, people! And it sucks to have a last-minute cancellation and end up with an hour and a half of free time. So if you have to reschedule, keep your stylist happy and call ahead! Free time = no pay = sad stylist.

7. MOST IMPORTANT: DON’T BE AFRAID TO SPEAK UP

Tips For a Smooth Hair Trial : wedding hair trial 73 7

(source) – though I think this stink-face says it all

If you don’t like the way your hair looks, don’t fake a smile (or look like someone farted) and tell him/her that you love it, then walk out and bitch about how you hate it. Tell your stylist! I promise, you will not be hurting his/her feelings. I promise, I promise, I promise. The trial is all about perfecting your vision for the wedding day, so why leave with something you don’t like and risk having the same thing done on the big day? Your stylist wants nothing less than for you to be happy when you walk out that door, but remember:  we’re not mind readers!

I think that just about covers it. If you’ve had your trial run or even your wedding already, do you have any other tips I didn’t mention to help your appointment go smoothly?

Thanks for the tips, lady! I keep forgetting that you’re a hair goddess! I need to harass you with questions later about, well, hair stuff. I can’t use my normal stylist for wedding hair, because he’s 70 miles away. I have to get somebody local, and I’m nervous and too chicken to speak up.

Stupid question - but could you also wear a ribbed tank top instead of a zip up/button up? I’m getting married in the summer so I was planning on having bridesmaids tank tops for everyone to wear. I figured it would be easy to slide over the hairdo or even step out of if necessary.

Awesome advice. I wish I had read this before I spent $75 on a trial that immediately followed a cut. My hair was so slippery it didn’t last more than 20 minutes. If a hairdresser offers a cut and trial on the same day, don’t do it!

great tips! #1 weirded me out so much when my stylist told me to not wash, but you’re right - it keeps the curls sooo much better!

Thank you for these tips - especially for promising that I won’t hurt their feelings!! I always worry about that, and have left sad from coloring/hair cuts many a time. This time I’ll speak up!! (And also follow all your other tips :) )

I’m with Osakagrl…. b/c I have blonde hair I feel like it shows grease sooooo easily and even if it doesn’t look terrible in the morning later in the day it looks so gross! Any advice? Get up REALLY early and wash it? Dry shampoos? Suffer through it?

hehe, the “who farted?” face would be pretty funny. thanks for the tips.

my hair tends to get a bit greasy as well, so i’m hoping to get away with shampooing the day before and washing my scalp really well with just water the day of. i don’t want to gross out my hair stylist.

Thank you for the tips!

Do you have any hair wisdom for us girls with fine hair? My hair is seriously one of the few things that is giving me hair anxiety!

@Osakagrl You’re in a salon, it’s easy to get back to “clean” if dirty isn’t working… it takes several more hours to get back to “dirty”. That whole shampooing thing is one of those services they traditionally offer there ;)

Me too re: greasy blonde hair. I skipped washing my hair this morning (hey, casual workplace) and my bangs and roots…*shudder* Not so pretty.

Both my hair trial and day-of hair appointments are in the early afternoon. I’m so tempted to get up early and wash my hair anyways, even though it’s not recommended, just because my hair shows grease so quickly. :P

@Osakagrl: @Miss_Riley: @Miss Pug: I would say maybe wash it the night before but go easy on the conditioner so it’s not so greasy in the morning. I’d try that for the trial and if your stylist can’t get it to look good/non greasy, you could wash it in the morning but dirty it up with some hairspray or gel. Just know that it probably won’t hold curl as long as it would if it wasn’t freshly washed.

Does the dirty hair trick apply to everyone?
My hair is more on the fine, limp side and it gets greasy easily (I don’t always wash my hair everyday, but by day 2, I HAVE to because my hair is so greasy, it itches), I think my hair curls easier when it’s clean.

I should add that I don’t usually use conditioner (unless my hair is loooong). I know, shame on me.
