About Mrs. Sewing

Well Suited - Or Not.

February 17th, 2010 @ 1:32 pm by Mrs. Sewing

My grand-master-plan before last Thanksgiving was to get pictures of Mr. Sewing and our brothers trying on suits in Monterey (so I could post some awesome pictures).

Well, that didn’t happen, for two reasons. First, apparently most shops don’t let you take pictures.

Huh?

I guess it’s similar to how some bridal shops won’t let you take pictures in the designer dresses, but Macy’s said no pictures. I didn’t bother trying at Men’s Wearhouse, for the second reason.

Nothing fits my fiance.

Macy’s took one look at him and said, “Nope, not going to happen.”

Men’s Wearhouse put three different jackets on him before coming up with some elaborate tailoring scheme I’m convinced would not be worth the effort. Banana Republic had nothing smaller than a 32 waist (we need a 27).

His chest is too flat (can I say that about a guy?), so he couldn’t “fill out” any of the jackets. His arms are also too short, but that (I’m told) is an easy tailor fix.

So I tread lightly across poor Mr. Sew’s masculine pride and asked the salesman, “Do you think I could try a children’s suit?”

Luckily for his pride (and only his pride), his shoulders happen to be normal-man size, so a boy’s size probably wouldn’t work.

And since all three guys want to match, we ended up not getting anything for Mr. Sew’s brother or Sewing-brother, either.

So, what do we do now?

The salesman at Macy’s suggested Mr. Sewing try the Nordstrom’s in San Jose. We both suppressed an inner snark-laugh at this, but it makes sense despite the stereotyping. Of course you’d send the small Asian man to an area with plenty of other small Asians.

So the new grand-master-plan is this: Mr. Sew and I go to Nordy’s in San Jose, and after we find something that will fit him, we’ll take down the “part number” of the suit, and have Mr. Sew’s brother try on the right style at Nordy’s in LA. Sewing-brother will just have to spare a weekend to come up to San Jose himself, since I don’t think they have a Nordy’s in San Luis Obispo. I wonder how hard it will be to fit my 6’3″ bean-pole of a brother? Hopefully easier than my 5’2″ fiance. Mr. Sew’s brother is the only normal sized guy around, it seems.

Sewing-brother and Mr. Sewing… two extremes!

And if, for some unforeseeable reason it doesn’t work out at Nordy’s - we’re going to the Chinese Bridal shop in downtown San Mateo, to have something custom made.

Any other options you can think of? How are you getting your men dressed? Do you have any difficult sizes to accommodate?

Man, what a pain! Thankfully, other than one short groomsman (but not that short), most of our guys are somewhere in the normal range. My 6′3″ brother is also a beanpole, though. ;) Still, he wasn’t hard to fit.

My fiance is in a similar bind as yours. He’s short, skinny and nothing fits him, because we haven’t been able to find a small enough suit. We live in LA, and in Beverly Hills there is a store called Jimmy Au’s, where we are getting his suit. They have a website: http://www.jimmyaus.com/jimmyaus/. (And yes, he’s a small Asian man too, but his suits are great!!!)

That is so funny I am not so worried about fit for my fiancee more so style, he wants his pants very skinny and the only pants we have seen like that are mind blowingly expensive!! It is funny too because when my grandparents were married my grandpa had a 28 inch waist and they had no problem finding a suit…

aww, that sucks ms. sewing! i think the macys you went to just sucks. my skinny and scrawny husband was able to find a suit from macy’s alfani red line. the red line is more of a slim fit. my BIL, who’s 5′ tall also found a suit at macys, and used their seamstress to alter the suit. we went to macys at union square if that helps.

my BIL also recommends nordys if macys doesnt work out for you.

I was worried about fitting FFIL (I think he’s a size somewhere around a 60 in a suit) but Men’s Wearhouse says their sizes go up to a 70! Problem solved in advance LoL

Oh no, what a pain! I was watching a show and apparently there are companies out there who specialize in clothing for short men (5′8″ and under) particularly those with dwarfism. It was pretty cool (but pricey) because the men on the show had the same issue–short, small waist, but normal man-sized shoulders. I hope you find something!

I’ve seen lots of skinny and short men in suits so I’d imagine you could find something somewhere!

We ended up getting a suit custom made for Mr. Sushi. He’s a tall, thin (but cut) guy. He usually has to buy larger sizes for his height, shoulders and long monkey arms :) , which makes everywhere else super large on him.

My fiance is average 5′10″ normal weight. However, our groomsmen, ushers, and fathers are all over the boards. From like 6′7″ to like 5′6″ and then if you talk about body build thats a whole other story. We went to a clothing broker in Oakland and he was able to get suits for everyone. Plus, the price was not that bad.

Man! My fiance is 6′4″ and really skinny with extra long arms (he weighs 175 lbs soaking wet)… we’ve been told by several places (Macy’s, Nordstrom, Jos. A Bank, Men’s Wearhouse, etc) that nobody makes suit jackets in his size and that tailoring a larger extra long jacket is not possible.

We have to get a custom-made suit–it’s going to cost more than my dress!

I hope it all works out. We don’t have problems with dressing the men, but I’ve had really good luck finding shoes for myself in San Jose because they cater to the tiny Asian women and I wear a size 5.

@Keladry: oh! thanks for the site. it’s nice that there is a store for situations like this (but oooshh! pricetags!)
@Miss Spaniel: that’s good to know! I’m hoping it’ll be easier for him..
@bohemianbailie: hehe, interesting how times change..
@ilee: ahh yeah I was hoping the alfani line would work since he has some alfani shirts that fit pretty well. but it was that silly jacket! will have to try union square macys though, it probably does have a better selection!
@hotchildinthecity: hehe! good that he’s covered!
@ejs4y8: yes, I’m sure we’ll figure something out eventually, but I’m hoping he isn’t swimming in fabric the day of! hehe
@Mrs. Sushi: i wonder what the price difference is in getting a custom..im thinking that’s what we’ll probably have to do.
@Miss Pug: ohh, he’s discouraged alright. we actually haven’t gone back to a suit store since november because of said discouragement..>.>”
@Carebear0613: what clothing broker in oakland? i am intrigued!
@commoshin: wow..that’s what I’m afraid of! and yeah, the long arm thing is always a problem with my brother..at least you found something though!

My guy is 5′10 and 112lbs… for those keeping track, that’s about a 14″ neck. Yes, he is a very skinny, lanky guy.

Long story short, his only suit options are either renting a tuxedo (which he did for a friend’s wedding) or getting one custom made.

Granted, he looked great in the tux, but he says they’re “too stuffy” for him. I agree.

He gets pretty discouraged about shopping for formal attire. Seems the only shirts that fit him are from 1MX fitted shirts from Express in an XS. No, I’m not kidding.

Unfortunately, there aren’t a whole lot of dress options for skinny dudes.

When we discussed clothing options for our wedding, we’re at the point where a collard shirt, tie and suspenders might just be enough.

As long as he’s comfortable. I can work around that.

My now-husband purchased a suit from Nordstroms. I’d planned to go with him there just so he could contrast the lower priced suits to those of the higher prices. He walked into the store, and fell in love with one there. Ok, “fell in love” for him is, “he walked up to it, looked at it, and seemed to admire it.” (Big steps for my fiance.)

Yup. His suit was $600 after tailoring. My dress was $800 after tailoring. I’m envious because he wears his suit every few weeks to church whereas my dress is in a box under a bed.

He loves that suit.

An alternate is that Nordstroms does make custom-made suits. I don’t know the prices. And that would make everyone matchy-match very pricey.

That’s hard — Mr. FF was accustomed to buying a specific size suit, but when we went in last weekend and purchased his, we were told to buy it like how we buy wedding dresses: to fit your largest measurement and then alter everything else down. What a novel concept!

I am not looking forward to going suit shopping with Mr. GP, he’s on the 6′3″ end of things!! Sorry to hear you’re having so much trouble finding stuff for Mr. Sewing :(

My FI is also asian, and is pretty short. We’re going with a JCrew suit because they can accomodate his 28″ inseam. They go as short as 26″ inseam, and as small as 28″ in the waist. It’s a bit more than I wanted to spend. His suit will cost more than my JCrew dress, haha, but we figure he will be able to get a lot of use out of it over the next several years. Good luck!

@laur xyz: wow, talk about a hard fit to find! i feel your pain.
@JtG: hehe, i’m glad he loves his suit :D
@Miss French Fries: interesting! that makes sense. but if he’s got non-standard proportions, that could be a lot of altering..
@Miss Guinea Pig: i hope your search goes better than ours!
@chexmixDC: haven’t tried jcrew yet, I’ll have to look into it! glad your FI found something!
