Cakie! - The Lights Come On

February 18th, 2010 @ 3:48 pm by Mrs. Sewing

We were planning on adding tiny power poles to our cake.

After help from a kind soul, I received these cuties in the mail:

Cakie! - The Lights Come On : wedding cake decor diy Poles

Cake power poles!

Now, since wood poles are for sissies, I’m going to have to paint them silver for some tubular steel pole action.

I’m thinking silver edible paint? That way I won’t have to worry about poisoning anyone.

Or I could just use normal, non-toxic paint, and leave the bottoms unpainted as we stick them into the cake?

And after we decide that, the next question is - what to use for cables?

Wire, I think, would be too unwieldy. I can just see a piece coming undone and springing a big hole right into the side of the cake. *shudder*

I do have jewelry wire, which is a little less rigid, that we could use -

Or maybe some embroidery thread (though I’d have to get some in black)?

In any case, I’m pretty excited about this cake now. Mr. Sewing and I will have to visit a hobby shop and get a cute little LED lamp for the top.

Why is everything in miniature always so cute? Does silver paint make your tongue sparkle? What do the power poles look like where you live? (The construction tends to differ by area.)

Oh, I love this idea! I can tell that you guys are going to have an awesome cake!

A few years ago, my then bf and I made a wedding cake for our friends, featuring them in a VW coupe. We put little motors in the wheels so they would turn! Everyone loved it.

We have wooden poles - pretty old school. Although they are starting to bury them underground now.

Detal floss?

All of our power lines are underground.

I am not sure what kind of poles we have at home but where I am now they are underground. I however am in love with the cake and I would use something soft like embroidery thread and maybe one with some shimmer.

I noticed that powerlines in NH were a lot shorter (in the rural areas) than they are out in WA. But then again I noticed that people in NH tend to be shorter too :)

this is such a cool, unique idea. i vote for the embroidery thread–seems like it will be easier to manipulate than the jewelry wire. but i could be wrong.

Such a cute, unique idea! I showed my hubby and he suggested using black licorice - you can pull them apart to use the thin strands. Just a thought - good luck! Can’t wait to see the finish product :-)

I normally just lurk but felt I needed to speak up to help you out. Don’t try the glaze! I am a cake-decorator-on-the-side and I can tell you it will most likely not work on hard plastic.
Go the spray paint route!

I know our light poles are silver and I think the power lines are wood. Can’t wait to see this creation of yours!

It’s going to be so cool!
I would try the rubber jewelry thread/string for the wires. It’s elastic like, comes in black, and all different thicknesses. In my mind , it would have the right “look” and be easy to work with.
