Mrs. Pretzel, Seattle Age and Occupation: 32 Learning, Training, and Development Specialist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28 Manufacturing Engineer Engagement Date: September 2, 2009 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Church & The Engine Room at Georgetown Studios About Me: I’m just a thirty-something girl who never dreamed of weddings, poofy dresses, or ritzy receptions. I am a rabid knitter, except recently, wedding projects have replaced my yarn and needles. I’ve been fiercely independent since the age of 2 and 30 years later I think my family and friends had given up on me settling down and getting married. Ironically, I had to go all the way to Seattle to find a boy from Purdue. We fell in love over Seattle Beers and cooking together. I love NASCAR, he loves Legos. I can talk like a Muppet and he can fit a whole McDonald’s cheeseburger in his mouth. We are a two reception couple, currently planning a brewery inspired bash.

Wanna Play Paper Dolls?

My grandma used to buy me paper dolls – sometimes as a little gift for a holiday and sometimes just because. I loved playing with them, especially the more vintage-y dolls. I distinctly remember a Victorian set of dolls and a 1950s set. I can’t help but smile when I picture the dolls with their modest underthings and a wide array of clothes and accessories just waiting to be combined in sometimes hilarious ways. Can you say pajama pants with a tennis skirt?

Imagine my delight when I spotted a set of paper dolls for the bride! Yeah, that’s right - I became 7 years old in an instant and have been pining for this set ever since.

I love the vintage feel (it’s a reproduction obviously). The set comes in a book like folder with a place to write down who is in your wedding party. Dolls and clothes for a Bride, Groom, Maid of Honor, Best Man, Bridesmaid (but no groomsmen—apparently boys make boring paper dolls) and flower girl. I think it would make a great keepsake that my future children could play with.

Sure, I could add it to my cart and click the purchase button, but I hold back. There is a certain sentimental element around paper dolls for me and even though my Grandma isn’t able to buy this set for me, there is a little girl inside me that secretly hopes one of my bridesmaids does :) . Yes I am shameless, I know. Will I be upset if I don’t get to be a 7 year old again and play paper dolls? Not in the least—but they are pretty cool.

Are you unable to pull the trigger on certain wedding related items, secretly hoping someone else gifts them to you?

Oh wow, I am buying this for my flower girl, who will be 3 years old at our wedding and will probably shoot me a “what the heck is this thing” look.

My Gramma used to give me paper dolls too! I also had a few sets of fairy tale characters, like Snow White and Sleeping Beauty - but not the Disney versions. Wish I still had them all, or knew where to find them! :( But I definitely think you should buy them for yourself if your wedding date gets closer and no one has surprised you with them ;) In fact, buy 2 - one for you, and one to save for your future children.

These are so charming. I am imagining, though, that your future children will get confused about which era you actually grew up in. :) Hope your bridesmaids come through, good luck!

lol. This is a really cute idea! I too was a huge paper doll fan when I was little. When I saw the beginning of your post, I was wondering where you were going to go with it…I’m so glad you are not having your bridesmaids walk down the aisle in modest “underthings.” hehe

I used to love playing with paper dolls! I would be in such a hurry to get different outfits on the dolls, that when I would punch their clothing out of the pages I would inadvertently tear off the tabs to keep the clothes on the doll! Ah, memories. :)

Don’t you love how the arms are positioned the same way on all of her clothes? I LOVED paper dolls when I was younger. I loved carefully tearing the dolls and clothes out and hearing the pop-pop of the perforated paper ripping.

I haven’t shared my secret gift wishes, but maybe I should…. :)

These vintage paper dolls would be great inspiration for a save the date or even the wedding invitation!

cute. but…i wonder why they don’t offer them in other ethnicities? things like this sometimes make me sad. it may seem nitpicky- but as i get older i think about wanting my future daughter to have figures (even play toys) that she can relate to.
