Mrs. Argyle, St. Louis Age and Occupation: 24, Project Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Pilot Engagement Date: February 15, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Jewel Box in Forest Park and Windows on Washington About Me: I'm a true Midwestern girl (born and raised), lover of red wine, reality TV and the entire J.Crew catalog. I love to dance regardless of who is watching, and enjoy a good laugh with my girls. I have a soft spot in my heart for planet Earth, my two dogs and my fiance. Fall is my favorite season (which is why we are marrying in September), but I love a warm summer day and the Colorado mountains in the winter. We are planning a modern soiree downtown, with lots of bold colors, and fun, eco-friendly elements.

Green Paper and Programs

February 19th, 2010 @ 11:55 am by Mrs. Argyle

Mr. Argyle and I are trying to incorporate several green and eco-friendly ideas into the wedding. This is one thing that was really important to us while planning our soiree. A few of the ideas we have come up with so far:

  • Printing our invitations front and back (saves paper!)
  • Using postcards for the RSVPs (no need to waste envelopes!)
  • Attempting to use recycled paper whenever possible (invitation suite, escort cards, menus, programs, envelopes, etc.)
  • Our ceremony venue (is a greenhouse, essentially, so there is no need to purchase additional floral arrangements)
  • Purchasing carbon offsets (To make up for all of the traveling our guests will do to spend our special day with us)

Our biggest dilemma lately is that we have been wavering back and forth about the use of programs. Our ceremony will be fairly short with really no readings and no songs, so it does not seem necessary to have programs.

However, FMIL Argyle has hinted that she would like us to have programs so everyone knows who is in the wedding party. But, since we are having a small party, it does not seem necessary, especially since they are on our website. THEN, I stumbled upon one of the greatest ideas for the wedding, which incorporates reusing the programs in a new way and the fact that Mr. Argyle is a pilot! Guests would fold the programs into paper airplanes for our exit from the ceremony (genius idea).

The only problem? Our venue doesn’t let you throw things. Oh, the heartbreak…

What other ways can we reuse the programs?

I’m going to *try* to print mine on heavy cardstock and attach them to a popsicle stick so they can be used as fans. We may be outdoors in October but I never underestimate the power of southern humidity.

You could have them in the shape of a fan, or some other functional thing, so their usage is doubled.

Or you could be sure to have a recycle bin at the exit so people drop them off and at least they get recycled.

Such a cute idea! Bummer that your ceremony venue doesn’t let you throw things, but what about your reception venue? Maybe they could shower you with paper airplanes as you walk in or as you make your exit for the night?

Ooh love the idea of a recycling bin! Could you throw stuff if you did it outside rather than inside?

Have you already printed the programs? If not, you could print them on seeded paper and guests could plant them to grow flowers afterward.

Can you tie your program and favors together? So that way, they are dual purpose.

The seeded-paper (wildflowers!) are a great option for programs, thank you cards etc. Guests can plant the paper at home, a true renewable resource indeed!

Your wedding party will be announced at the reception. I don’t think you should be “guilted” into making programs if you don’t want them. I’m sure that I have been to weddings where either they didn’t have programs, or I didn’t grab one.. and I don’t think I was concerned either time.

@gill84: Our ceremony is in doors, so there won’t be a use of fan, but I agree on the double-usage!

@ChiCat: OH! Good idea at the reception!

@Miss Lace: We are definitely utilizing recycling bins - a must!

@Morgan: We thought about seed paper, but we are having a lot of guests - could get a bit $$. Love the idea nonetheless!

@Ella1978: I’m not being guilted - it was something she asked about. The end result will be a decision the Mr. and I make.

I wanted to give wildflower seeds as a favor but did not want to make all the packets and wanted something as reusable as possible. Have you thought of using seed paper? http://www.flowerseedpaper.com/ After you are done, you plant it.

I didn’t mean that to come off snotty at all. I’m sorry. I have been pressured to incorporate certain things into my wedding that I didn’t necessarily want, and I understand. So sorry if that came out wrong. You should def. get what you want.

What if you left a place on the back of the program for guests to write you advice or good wishes and had a place at the reception to collect them all? Or, could you use the other side as a menu? Or a song request sheet for your DJ/band?

How about just making less programs than the number of guests? Most people can share with their spouse or date, or even the person sitting next to them. I’d make 1/2 the number of guests you expect to come.

@Mrs. Mouse: I definitely agree with that. We planned on printing 1/2 to 3/4, but mostly just printing them for the ladies - the guys usually don’t care!
