Non-Lame First Dance

February 19th, 2010 @ 1:57 pm by Mrs. Ribbons

I don’t know how universal this experience is, but I once dated someone who read Pitchfork frequently. This is a site you read if you want to know about every obscure up and coming band and belittle others for their crappy musical choices. Basically.

The benefit of all of that is I have a decent music library now, filled with both standards and some indie stuff. And it’s time to start thinking about first dance songs!

My fiance and I don’t really have a song. There’s a lot of songs we both like, but the closest thing to our song is probably Bitches Ain’t Shit. Oops.

So without further ado, a bunch of songs from our collections.

Here’s one we found because of our DJ’s monthly music lists.

And finally, a standard, with probably the best arrangement of this song.

We still haven’t decided. I guess we should try dancing to some!

How are you choosing the first dance song?

We used Better Together by Jack Johnson. I think I first heard about it on Wedding Bee.

Hey fellow Cohen fan!
We are going with Leonard Cohen’s “Dance me to the end of love” performed by madeleine peyroux. Cohen’s lyrics are beautiful and meaningful without being cheesy. Madeleine’s arrangement is just a bit sensual, just a bit jazzy, and absolutely romantic.

I’m so glad someone is working on it. Can you find good songs and just send it to me? I took this project on with Mr. Lace and then had to put it down because I was so tired of listening to music. I’ll wait for your list in my inbox. :) Thanks!

“Our song” is Let Go, by Frou Frou… but this would be a little fast and strange to dance to I think. I’m pretty sure we’re going to use Lullaby by the Dixie Chicks as our first dance song instead.

“They didn’t have you where I come from
Never knew the best was yet to come
Life began when I saw your face
And I hear your laugh like a serenade

How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough, is forever enough
How long do you want to be loved
Is forever enough
Cause I’m never, never giving you up”

the man I LOVE She and Him’s version of You Really Got a Hold on Me!!! it’s one of “our songs” our other song is Musiq Soulchild’s “Betterman”

He is always getting upset with me and affectionately refers to me musical choices in High Fidelity terms: “Musical Elitest”

I LOVE She and Him!
We don’t have a song either. But talked about using “Love it all” by the Kooks. We both like the song but are unsure if we can dance to it…

Great songs! You Really Got a Hold on Me and Home were my favourites. And if I didn’t have enough reason to love Zooey Deschanel…thanks so much for posting that video. I may just use it during our ceremony…or would that be weird?

We are using The Girl by City & Colour (a local band).

Great version of you really got a hold on me! We’re using Sweet Pea (as did many other bees) and love that its not terribly well known.

Looooove your list. “Home” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros is one of my new favorite songs.

I also have She & Him and Sam Cooke on our music list.

If we do a first dance (we probably won’t) it might be “Lover’s Waltz” by A.A. Bondy.

Here is my list.

We haven’t decided yet. We don’t have a song but we were both really into a Jimmy Eat World album when we first started dating. Actually, it was playing in his car on our first date and I took that as a sign.

He hasn’t really thought about it yet, but I have three ideas:

1) First Day of My Life - Bright Eyes
2) Let’s Stay Together - Al Green
3) Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Baby - Barry White

Miss Ribbons!I am so excited that Niave Melody is on someone else’s first dance list! We looooove that song and things it fits so well, but I think it would be difficult to dance to and we don’t exactly have fancy feet! We are still deciding between that and “You’re My Home” Billy Joel (different I know), but those are our favorites!

Love the “real” Ribbons song! LOL

We went with a softer one from Ben Folds, The Luckiest. There were a couple of Joshua Radin songs in the running, but Ben won out in the end. :o)

She & Him are amazing, I’ve been a fan for a long while now. Zooey Deschanel’s voice is mesmerizing with that old jazzy feel to it.

Brianne: First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes is an incredible song. I’m always impressed when people know of Connor Oberst as he and his music are so off the radar.

I’m a music junkie, so I’ve taken command of our wedding playlist. I’m having some trouble narrowing it down, but I’ve got a few more months! :)

Best of luck to all of you!

Oh man, Miss Ribbons. I have been searching high and low for the perfect non-lame first dance song. For the longest time, I thought it would be Sweet Thing by Van Morrison. I thought it was perfect, classic, not overdone….and then I spoke with a friend of mine who is getting married a few months before FI and me, and he is using that song! What the what! So, when I saw your post I jumped on it. And I think I might have found the song. Thank you thank you thank you for including Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. It is everything we are looking for. Non-sappy, genuine, sweet, and original. Yay!

We don’t have a song that’s “ours”, so we’re doing a cultural one instead.
