So the time has come, Miss Pug said,

to talk of many things

Of shoes, and ships,

and sealing wax,

of cabbages (or artichokes) and kings… or UNDERTHINGS!

The process of planning a wedding is akin to falling down the rabbit hole with Alice—a little world filled with twists, turns and surprises that you never knew existed until you became a planning bride.

For example, after you buy a dress, your decisions have only begun. Over or under bustle? What veil? Sash or no sash? And, while not visible but almost just as important, what to wear under the dress?

What to wear as an undergarment to, you know, control my huge bust?

[reader pauses, wondering whether s/he is reading the wrong blogger]

Okay, even without a bust to speak of, what were my options? In order to research the lazy way, I typed in “bustier” into the Weddingbee search box, and found a veritable wealth of threads about this. Go ahead, try it.

Strapless bra?

I already have a strapless bra, so it would have been great to go this route. Alas, my dress has a low back and the band for the strapless bra goes straight across the back. No go.

Bra pads sewn into dress?

Of Cabbages and Kings (and Underthings)... : wedding undergarments Bra Cups

Source

They can sew bra pads directly to the inside of your dress. Little fuss! However, considering the cost of alterations, I wanted to try and find something that I could keep and use beyond the wedding. Don’t ask me what that tube is at the bottom, it was really hard finding a picture of a bra pad.

Bustier?

Of Cabbages and Kings (and Underthings)... : wedding undergarments Bustier bustier

Source

Nice idea! Low back, support, and shaping for the torso—sounds good! I bought a Wacoal bustier that was so comfortable and fit very well, but guess what? My dress couldn’t zip up when I was wearing it. Mm hm, I can’t tell you how *good* that made me feel.

So I could go without anything, but honestly there is a vain part of me that would like to fill out the bustular area of the dress just a *wee* bit better. So I’ve been considering the Nu bra.

(This pic makes me a little uncomfortable, like the bra is staring at you. Weird.)

These are essentially silicone bra pads that, through some strange method no doubt devised by the Cheshire Cat, kinda suction on to and stick to your boobs. There is a little “seat belt” in between the cups that help create lift and cleavage. Fascinating. These seem a bit new-fangled to me—would they work? Has anyone tried it? What do you think?

Oh, and in the inevitable event that I’m going to gorge myself on food and wine, I may want to have some kind of control over the belly area.

Of Cabbages and Kings (and Underthings)... : wedding undergarments Pspnx1 pSPNX1-

Spanx me! Spanx me!

Hot, right? Yeah, huh? Won’t Mr. Pug be excited to see these under my wedding dress! (For a more attractive option, check out Miss Guinea Pig’s post.)

Back to the bras. I haven’t made a final decision, but what do you all think of the Nu Bra? What do you plan to use, or what have you tried? Pros and cons?

Yeah, I think my bustier had something of an impact on why my dress still needed to be taken out (at least, I would like to tell myself that)… I’d actually vote for the sewn in cups. I’d be less afraid of them falling down that way. ;)

I’ve tried the stick’em bras, and I really like them. The only tip I have is not to get to enthusiastic about removal, because I swear I thought I may have ripped off something important for a minute!

I think those things in the picture are underwire…
I love love LOVE Spanx!

I’ve tried the nu bra… I have some boobs (C) so they didn’t provide me with enough support to be comfortable. But for smaller breasteses they would work totally fine! They feel mushy though… LOL

When I went dress shopping one of the consultants reccomended the sewn in bra pads. Her reason: You don’t want to be tugging on your dress all day because you think it is falling down, most of the time that slipping feeling is your strapless bra, not the dress itself. I will definitely be getting the pads sewn in. For me, it is worth the extra expense to not have any candid shots of me with my hands up near my armpits!

I’m going to BraTenders (don’t laugh) today after work to check out my options! I’ve tried the nuBra before, and it’s pretty good. I prefer the nuBra Featherlite option though - it’s less heavy and doesn’t add as much boob. Unless that’s what you want, in which case, the nuBra original is great!

I have this problem too. Scrawny tall person with 34 A chest (32 A if I’m trying for some cleavage). Most of the strapless bras (even the VS) just don’t do enough lift and shove to make them look like anything worthwhile. I’m going to be looking at that cool gelly stuff too here…

LOL, My school’s 6th grade play was Alice & Wonderland, and I was an oyster that recited that story. Love me some Spanx and I’m hoping to get cups sewn in so I don’t have to worry about a bra.

oh i have that nu bra!!1

i bought it at a trade show in chicago SEVERAL years ago (5 i think) and it lasted me all through my slinky shirt days and dresses in college and even a few weddings this summer

i used to be a B and it was alright in the support range, but now that im a large B or small C its not so great.
Luckily the dresses I wore it with had a semi ‘bra top’ to help with the support.

good luck!

I’ve got a Nu Bra, and for an evening when you’re not being super active, it’s great. But … wow there really is no classy way to say this, so watch me try! Remember that its plasticy stuff affixed directly to your skin, and the glue is really quite effective. So, anything that comes out of your skin while wearing said plastic (*cough* sweat *cough*) will stay in the plastic. Not the most pleasant sensation in the world.

I wore the nu-bra for a wedding i was in a few years ago and it did not hold ‘the girls’ up or together at all! Gonna have to try spanx next.

Alas my sexy spanx options were all for naught, as I ended up going with the industrial strength version too :D A friend of mine said she liked the NuBra, but the suction business would make me nervous they’d fall off!

I have the Nu-Bra and I LOVE it!! I just got it and tried it for a day just to be sure and it wasn’t bad! A little strange feeling, but not bad! :)

I totally recommend it~!

I have the nu-bra, bought it for a low back dress also. I do not particularly care for it. I’m a 36A, it did nothing in the way of lifting or supporting. And if you sweat even a little it starts coming un stuck. When I was trying to clip it in the middle for the “added cleavage” the cups started sliding. Have you thought about getting one of those converter bras? I got this one at Nordstrom, you can make it strapless and it has this extra piece that you attach to the back straps to angle them down low. http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3021205/0~2376776~2374327~6010810~6010827?mediumthumbnail=Y&origin=category&searchtype=&pbo=6010827&P=1

I am going braless! Don’t need it ;) And I think the dress looks better without anything underneath. But I will actually try on some bustiers just in case, could come in handy as a newlywed too!

I’ve tried an imitation Nu-Bra (I got mine for $10 from an clothing store in Chinatown) and I thought it was just ok. My girls felt covered, but hanging. Taking them off is as awful as it sounds, feels like someone ripping tape off your sensitive bits. In the end, I just bought a strapless bra the day before.

I went for my first fitting the other day and discussed this very issue! The salon doesn’t recommend sewing in cups for anything above a B — in fact, they only have sizes A and B to sew in. The consultant told me their recommendations for busty girls was to “get a bra.” As a DD I have to go on the hunt for a low-backed/longline bustier before the next fitting when we’ll deal with the bodice of the dress… we ended up just getting it hemmed this time.

I’ve heard the nu-bra is great until you start to sweat, and then it starts to slip. I’m probably going to be going with a bustier of some sort. Still has some tummy control but it’s a little sexier than spanx! :-)

I would go for cups sewn in or a convertable bra like the ones from VS that can have the straps go a million ways. I’ve always had problems with those stick-um bras- I can’t ever get them on straight, and while they stay on ok, I always feel like they’re going to fall off. I actually found ones at Target that are super cheap and stick well- but I still think for the wedding I will be finding a real bra that I can strap onto myself.
You might consider having your seamstress sew a band into the top of your dress that hooks around you so that your dress doesn’t fall down. My friend did that for her wedding and she said it was the #1 best thing she had done during her alterations!

I am leaving this up to the professionals! My bridal shop offers a “finishing touches” appointment when the dress first comes in, long before alternations time, when they suggest shoes, veil and undergarments to go with your gown. Probably a very pushy sales appointment, but I’m strong enough to push back, and I’m interested to hear what they think the best options for coverage and support are with my gown. I *really* don’t require much though, so I don’t see myself buying a big hulking bustier - unless it’s really pretty…
