About Ms Potato Chips

Magic Hair

February 20th, 2010 @ 5:30 pm by Ms Potato Chips

My hair has a mind of its own. It’s not straight. Not curvy. Not really wavy, either. Somewhere between all those things + poufy.

It’s Hermione Granger hair. NOT the Hermione from the movie. Let’s get real. MovieHermione merely hinted at the reckless frizzy sometimes-disaster of BookHermione. MovieHermione was coiffed-bedhead-chic. My hair was BookHermione, frizzy and poufy, the end.

I heard about Keratin straightening in the fall, when a fellow Hermione-Haired friend gave it a shot. Starting at $250, it doesn’t run cheap but after seeing her shiny straight locks, I had to try it. I was getting antsy about growing out my hair and I consider blow drying the most colossally frustrating use of time.

Is it too dramatic to say Keratin changed my life?

Pardon the goofy photo, I mistook myself for Cher for a second there.

It was like wearing a really shiny, awesome wig. For once I could let my hair air dry straight. Even blowing it dry took less time, and I’ve only recently starting using my flat iron again. Keratin treatment is meant to last about 4-5 months, which means it’s starting to fade. I’m dying to do it again but my hair dresser and bank account have advised me to wait until after the wedding.

If you’re considering Keratin treatment, here are some PChipz-Tipz:

  • Do it on a Friday, or over a long weekend if you can swing it. You cannot wash your hair for 72 hours following treatment and—the hardest part—you cannot use any clips, pins, elastics in your hair. You can’t even tuck it behind your ears. The 72-hour period was okay for me because I’m a recluse who spends her weekends in her office or a bookstore studying, but for you social types it might be trickier.
  • Make sure you use sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners afterwards. My salon threw some in for free, but there are plenty of drugstore versions available, like this or this.
  • Call around for prices. Some salons offer free shampoos and conditioners and/or a complimentary trim. Some don’t. Some charge for the product by the ounce, others start at a certain price point (ranging, in my area alone, from $250-$400!).
  • Get it done the morning of a big event or fun night out so you can swing it around all night
  • If you don’t feel comfortable putting chemical-type-things near your head, call and talk to the stylist. After some quick online research, I was concerned the product contained formaldehyde (it does not). I had a long convo with the stylist about it. (It has some other chemicals that, in twenty years time, will probably prove to be equally harmful but hey—have you seen my swingy shiny hair??)
  • If you have a cowlick like I do, run a flat-iron through it during the 72-hour waiting period to ensure that it lies flat

Having straight, manageable hair has made a WORLD of difference in growing it out. But I can see how this would be a great idea for wedding day hair, if you want a sleek look, or in lieu of a post-wedding chop.

Has anyone gotten or considering getting this treatment as a pre- or post-wedding treat?

so after the 4-5 months will your hair go back to it’s normal curl? Or will it never be as curly again?

@amariem25: After 4-5 months it’ll gradually fade. For instance, I’ve noticed lately that I have to spend more time blow-drying it and I need to bust out the flat-iron or else the ends curl up. For the first couple months I could let it air-dry (although it’s rather too cold here to do so) or give it a quick blow-dry—no messing with dividing up sections—and it was flat and shiny. I got it done in October and my hair is still frizz-free, which is huge!

They say the more you treat it, the straighter it becomes and the longer the treatments last. I hope that’s the case!

I’ve been thinking about this, too. Maybe I should start saving up for it now! Looks great on you!

@Mrs. Mouse: Thanks! It is awesome! I should have mentioned that I got it done in October, so it is starting to fade away (but is still frizz-free).

I’ve thought about this too! I have BookHermoine hair as well - it’s SO annoying! It looks great - maybe I’ll have to get it someday!

Ooh that looks great! Any chance of a before picture for comparison? I’ve got really straight hair, but for whatever reason, I always feel like I have tons of flyaways, so I’ve been thinking of getting the Keratin treatment before the wedding. Glad to hear it’s worked out so well for you!

@ChiCat: Take a look at this post of mine: http://www.weddingbee.com/2009/10/09/slouching-of-the-brides/

I had blow-dried AND flat-ironed my hair that day. If I hadn’t, it would have been much poufier and a little wavy/kinky.

Looks great!! I normally have pretty straight hair but the BKT gives you the convenience of not having to brush your hair and still looking awesome!

“It was like wearing a really shiny, awesome wig” LOL! Luckily my Hermione-head is fixed with salon shampoo, a blow dry & flat iron. Your hair looks great!

I’m a hairstylist and I have a service similar to this one. It’s called the Brazilian Blowout. You should check into it. Depending on the stylist it would probably be a tad bit cheaper (still costly, but it’s a costly product) but it only lasts 10-12 weeks. The great thing about the Brazilian Blowout though is, it’s GOOD for your hair and not harmful. Plus you don’t have to wait to wash your hair.

Anyways, I probably sound like a spam seller =p

When I read this article, it discouraged me from getting the keratin treatment: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/10/26/earlyshow/health/main3414868.shtml
Basically there is concern that the formaldehyde used in conjunction with the keratin is harmful.

I have the hermione hair too! This looks awesome, I’m definitely going to look into it.!

Although I’ll be wearing my hair curly, rather than straight for the wedding - I want to look like myself, and people always say that my hair straight changes my looks dramatically.

It turned out great! A girl I used to work with has been doing it for a long time and she loves it.

@S: Yes, I was afraid of that one too! The treatment I used (Keratin Complex) is different from the Brazilian one you cited and does NOT use formaldehyde.

Your hair looks fab! It’s so shiny.

People (ahem….my cousin/mom) who dislike my curly hair have been trying to get me to do this for months, but I’ve finally come to terms with my curls. After doing the japanese straightening and ruining it during college, I just decided to let go and do it’s thing-and we’ve been homies ever since.

In my salon, we do this treatment, CONSTANTLY !
It really is amazing.
Changed so many ladies lives, for serious.

For those of you concerned - we had the fumes & product tested ( one of our staff members wives is an environmental scientist - so it was free!) and the amount of the chemical is SO small - so so small.

We had a special vent installed - like a giant bathroom vent - to pull the fumes out of the shop when a keratin is being done :)

Thanks for the good before pics - it looks like it really has made a difference! As a sidenote, I actually used to live about 2 blocks from the Hynes Convention Center back in Boston, and did the running of the brides one year, too! I wasn’t nearly as organized or hardcore about it as you were, and didn’t find my dress there, but boy was it fun :)
