2 Wedding Cakes and a Polar Bear

February 22nd, 2010 @ 2:21 pm by Mrs. Hamster

Where do polar bears fit into the Hamster wedding? Well, other than a small but pivotal role in the proposal, nowhere. However, based on the crazy postage necessary for our invitations (they are friggin’ stiff and heavy), a polar bear would be making a very conspicuous appearance, like so:

You like? Yeah, me neither.

I have nothing against polar bears in particular (never had a poor encounter with one), but featuring one on our invitation envelopes wasn’t exactly what I had in mind. That’s when I turned to the custom stamp route - via Zazzle. Using our engagement photos from our shoot with Erica Lyn, I created two stamps:

1. For the main envelope

2 Wedding Cakes and a Polar Bear : wedding postage Zazzle1 Zazzle1

2. For the RSVP envelope

2 Wedding Cakes and a Polar Bear : wedding postage Zazzle2 Zazzle2

Based on the number of invitations we had and the stamps we needed, it was going to cost an extra $100 to be-zazzle our invitations, in addition to the postage cost itself. $100 more?? Hammy don’t play dat. With a little intrawebs research, I was able to bring that $100 down to $35. And now I pass the savings on to you.

Hamster’s Tips for Custom Stamps on the Cheap:

1. Set up a free account at Ebates. ($5 credit)
You will get an automatic $5 credit for signing up - sweet!

2. Enter the Zazzle store through the provided link (10% rebate)
Right now, Ebates is offering 10% cash back on all Zazzle purchases.

3. Search RetailMeNot for any coupon codes. (10% off, $5 off)
This will vary by date, but at the time I ordered, I entered 2 coupon codes to get $5 off as well as 10% off my entire order.

4. Try to get free shipping ($3 off).
Ebates provided a coupon code for free shipping on orders over $125. It’s only $3 off, but every little bit helps!

5. If you can, try to save on tax as well!
By shipping the stamps to my parents’ house in New Jersey, I was able to save on New York tax.

The above took no more than 10 minutes, and I was able to save $65. If you’re considering going the custom stamp route, give it a try!

What is the best deal you’ve gotten during the planning process?

What a deal finder. Go you! If I knew all that I might’ve done this for our invitations. Super cute and a nice little personal touch.

Funny, the polar bear was perfect for us! We used him on our reply postcards and he worked well for a winter wedding! I don’t see him working elsewhere though.
