Birdcage Veil Placement

February 22nd, 2010 @ 10:16 am by Mrs. Hot Wings

Who knew there were so many options? As if it wasn’t enough to have to pick a dress and decide whether or not to wear a veil at all. If you do choose a veil, then which kind will you wear? I decided I want to wear a birdcage veil. Our civil ceremony location is on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It will no doubt be very windy. I certainly don’t want to deal with an out of control veil. But there are so many more decisions to make when it comes to the birdcage. I had no idea until I started really thinking about it.

How will the birdcage veil be worn? Should it come across my eyes? should it be pinned at the side of my head, on top of my head, or on both sides of my temples? White or black? Fascinator or none? Eek.. to make my point and help to clarify the differences, I’ve gathered these images.

(1) Over the forehead but not quite over the eyes.

(2) With a hat and in black. Maybe this is more of an engagement picture than wedding day look?

(3) Straight across covering the eyes. This seems to be the most common and most traditional look. At least it’s plentiful in the blogosphere.

(4) Larger and slanted from cheek to chin. This is the Madison birdcage veil by Castle Bride. Very glamorous. But maybe this style isn’t the best for a DIY bride like myself who plans on crafting her own birdcage, huh?

(5) A big puff covering the entire head or to the jaw line. I have a big head. Will this make my head look bigger? The pros of this one include no break across the face and how fun and easy it will be to flip it back into a sort of traditional veil.

(6) Straight across right at or just above eye level. I worry that this one will interfere with my vision.

(7) More of a fascinator than a veil. I love the way these veils look. Would I miss not having a “veil” veil?

What do you think? Does the shape and placement of the veil matter? Which style do you prefer?

Oh what a great post! I DIY’d a birdcage veil and I still haven’t decided yet how to wear it! I too love the big poof, but worry if I could pull it off!

I’m wearing a birdcage veil as well and at this point I think I’m going with the placement that covers both eyes. Once I have my hair trial I’m sure I’ll have a clearer idea though.

I considered a birdcage, but in the end stuck with my cathedral. These pictures make me reconsider, though! As for placement, I think covering both eyes is great — but I agree, the big poof definitely makes a statement!

I never knew there were so many options either! They all look good, but I’m a fan of 1 and 8 :)

I went with slanty one eye myself. I thought it looked best with my head :)

I like the slanted version, like how Mrs. Sea Breeze wore hers. And, I also like the idea of it being worn like a fascinator. But this is also coming from a “no veil” bride…

lol whoa! That’s me! This is an interesting discussion! I ended up not using the long veil in the wedding like I wore it in the photo above, but I wore the birdcage veil just like that with a flower/feather fascinator on the side. For the reception I pulled it into a puff on my head behind the fascinator. Most people like to leave the mouth uncovered, it seems, but I wanted it to my chin. My husband had to pull up the bottom to kiss me and it got stuck on my nose! :-) But I loved how it looked. If i had to pick one i like the most out of these, it’s 3. :-)

I think my favorite is the Sea Breeze look, but really, all of the placements look great. It’s such a versatile veil.

Who knew there was so much to think about?? Miss Cookie’s version is my favorite, but a lot of these are awesome. I think I’m drawn to having less of it over the face.

i love Mrs Seabreeze’s “one-eye slant” style best. I ultimately went with a cathedral length veil because i couldn’t get my hands on the netting to DIY in time and everything online is so friggin’ overpriced, GAAH!

I wore mine as slanted, just covering one eye, but it was a little lower than Seabreeze’s.

I like options 1 and 8. The ones that come down really low seem like they would get annoying! I also like the fascinator option–that’s more what I went with and I was happy with it, though I did miss not having a veil a LITTLE bit.

I loved my big pouf birdcage. I only wore it for a little bit, so it wasn’t long enough to get annoying, but definitely very glam!

I am obsessed with different styles of birdcage. I prefer the medium length ones. the short ones annoyed me and the long one made me look like a spaceman. :)

I didn’t realize too when I wanted a birdcage veil that there were so many ways to wear it. Mine is more of a fascinator poof on the side, just barely in my face.

I loved Mrs. Seabreeze and Mrs. Cheese’s (found here: http://www.weddingbee.com/2009/07/13/its-time/#more-100768 ) I’m on the fence between being a no-veil bride and a birdcage veil bride so i’m a fan of small ones that are mostly out of the way.
