I like reading wedding blogs, Photoshopping wedding design mock ups, making lists, and planning, planning, planning! I’m a bit of an anomaly, on one side I’m a very girlie girl, I collect shoes, I lay out my outfits 4-6 weeks in advance, and I’d never leave the house without my hair curled and makeup on. But on the other side, I’m a total tomboy, I love to go camping and hiking, play drinking games (hey, I’m Irish!) and most of my closest friends are guys. My fiancé and I are planning a DIY-focused wedding with a balance between easygoing (what he wants) and chic and stylish (what I want), and are tying it all together with elements in lavender, sage, butter cream and chocolate.

February 22nd, 2010 @ 1:39 pm by Mrs. Cola

Sorry, I couldn’t think of a good title for my music post that hadn’t already been used, so I’ll just let you all use your imagination! :)

It’s finally time for me to do the obligatory music playlist post, which I hope you all will enjoy. I know I read everyone’s playlists I could find before creating my own, to find the best reception music ideas out there. But then, I kind of a “Top 40″ girl, so making the playlist wasn’t that hard for me!

We aren’t really doing much to appease the masses (read, the older guests) with our music selections. ’Sweet Caroline’ or ’Brown Eyed Girl’ will not be making appearances at our wedding, because, frankly, I’m just not that into dancing to a lot of older tunes. Don’t get me wrong, I love classic rock, but I just don’t feel like a lot of the songs are that great to dance to. And we will have full control, because we’re doing all the music ourselves!

Yep, we’ll be having an “iPod Wedding”, or actually, using my laptop!

Our ceremony musician (and also my MOH/Sister’s boyfriend) will be monitoring our playlists throughout the night, making the transitions at the appropriate times, and of course, we will have a back up mp3 player on hand, just in case. This is a huge budget saver for us, and also, I’m happy I won’t have to give up any control over the music, since I’m always in control of our party playlists at home!

I’m still tweaking our wedding playlists, and probably will for another couple months (you never know when a new song will come out that will be a perfect addition!), but here is my list so far, with song lengths. I tried really hard to find songs for the cocktail hour that are “lovey” but a little more upbeat, then “really lovey” slower songs for dinner, and good dance songs for the rest of the reception. We want everyone feeling energized and like partying for the dancing portion of the evening, which is why I’ve left slow songs off the last list.

I will need to reorganize these into a better mix at some point, since they’re alphabetical right now, as well as weed out some of the less important songs and rearrange them to fit in the allotted times. I’ve noted the song importance in my song list as:

Must Have = duh, it must be played
OK to Have = could be cut if needed to accommodate must have songs
Not a Must Have = will probably be cut unless I need it to fill the time

Cocktail Playlist - 70 mins - 5:20 PM to 6:30PM

  • 1, 2, 3, 4 - Plain White Ts - 3.18 - OK to Have

  • I Gotta Feeling - Black Eyed Peas - 4.49 - Must Have
  • Ignition (remix) - R. Kelly - 3.06 - Must Have

Ignition is a kind of silly/not-that-appropriate song to include, but it’s the first song Mr. Cola and I ever danced to, so it has to be on our playlist! “Sippin’ on coke and rum…”

And to help ensure we remain in full control of our music the whole night, we will have this sign I made on my laptop, with the screen closed. No chicken dance requests would be possible anyway, since that’s not a song already on my computer!

[Insert Catchy Music Post Title Here] : wedding music Img 545 How much control do you plan on having in your reception song selections? Anyone else going the iPod or laptop route?

That’s a good dance playlist but I really think you might lose a lot of your older guests. I know you said you don’t think the classic songs are good to dance to, but the older guests are going to disagree with you and they might get fed up with hearing the pop music and leave early. I know at my wedding I played a number of classic rock songs and I heard that afterward my grandma still complained that there wasn’t enough slow and old songs for her to dance to. I tried at least!

Great list, Cola! I was just working on ours today, actually. Thanks for the “The Way I Am” reminder. PS: We love OAR too!

You maybe, most likely, definately are my sister from another music mother! You seriously hit the nail on the head with these lists! I’ve never been a ‘music’ person, but I LOVE me some Top 40! And, am I the only one who sing the UB-40 version of “I can’t help falling in love”?

I really want to go the laptop/iPod route, but I have one issue:

What kind of sound equipment do you need for a reception, and where do you get it?

We’ll be having an ipod wedding as well! I love your music choices! Most of the people that will be dancing at our wedding will be younger or listen to classic rock stuff, so were not going to worry about playing oldies. (although I HAVE to include some Temptations, some My Girl anyone??)

You should make “Hey Ya!” a Must Have. We weren’t even that into playing it at our wedding b/c we both felt like it got a little played out on the radio a few years ago. But seriously, as soon as that song started, EVERYONE in the room started moving. It was almost involuntary–you HAVE to dance when that song comes on!

Hilarious - Ignition (Remix) was on our must-play list too, mostly because it’s a sort-of family anthem for my side of the family. That makes us sound sort of terrible, eh? I think we scared my husband’s family…

That’s our first dance song too! So gorgeous. This is a great list - hope you don’t mind if I cut and paste as inspiration for our list. :)

oh, i want to know about sound equipment too!

our venue has a sound system that is throughout the house and deck, but it is a pretty old model and for the life of me i can’t figure out how to hook up the actual computer to the system! i guess we could always make CDs.

@theresa and @goodheart: I’m actually lucky enough to work for a consumer electronics company, so we’ll be borrowing a receiver and speakers from my company’s trade show supplies! Either that, or if we have another employee sale, I might just buy the speakers since we need new ones for our home anyway. We’ll be using 4 Tower speakers (one in each corner of the room) that are about 3.5 feet tall, each with two 3.5″ woofers and one 1″ aluminum tweeter, a center channel speaker and a 10″ 120 watts Class AB subwoofer. I don’t know the specs of the receiver we’ll be borrowing, but I do know that it is a Denon, and you basically just hook the speaker cables up to the back, and plug your laptop in, and it’s ready to go!

Glad to see another person doing an ‘iPod’ wedding! We’re still searching for a person to man ours, and fleshing out our playlist, so thanks for the ideas!
