After we made our way around the room, talking with each table, our coordinator, Rick, directed us toward the stage. MOH Deniz and Best Man Curtis joined us onstage for the traditional toasts. (As an aside, I had to pee really bad at this point. I know that I was the bride, and everyone would’ve waited for me—but dinner had already gone long. We wanted to make sure that there was plenty of time for fauxtobooth fun and dancing, so I just went with it. But now you know why I look a little antsy in some of the following photos!)

Best Man Curtis and the Dude have been friends since their sophomore year of college. They bonded over a love of statistics and college football.

None of us had heard Curtis give a speech before, and we were totally impressed by his skills. His speech was heartfelt without being sentimental, and he made everyone laugh from the first line.

All I really remember specifically is that he talked about a song he and the Dude had written together in college—to the tune of Oasis’s “Wonderwall”—called “Candy Bar.” One of our friends misheard him and yelled out “Cannonball!”

Then it was MOH Deniz’s turn. I’ve known Deniz since the summer before our junior year of college, when we studied together in England. We’ve been through a lot together in a relatively short time, and I count her among my best friends in the whole world.

Deniz has a unique perspective on the Dude’s and my relationship, as she was there the night we met. She was also around a lot during the early stages of our relationship.

She was very nervous about giving this speech, but she did a great job! True to her personality, Deniz overshared just a tad in her toast. She told the story about how the Dude and I almost broke up about three months into our relationship. She started that part of the speech with, “The Dude did something very, very stupid. He broke up with Miss Mouse.”

The following picture shows how shocked and awkward the Dude and I felt that she brought this up. (Also, see my above comment about having to pee.)

I thought the toast was very honest and sweet and totally, characteristically “Deniz”. The Dude’s family is pretty protective of him, though, so I hope none of them took offense.

The Dude went next, giving a short and sweet toast just thanking everyone for coming. I had intended to speak with him, but I was paralyzed by my fear of public speaking (and to be honest, all I could think about at this point is how much I had to pee!).

After the toasts were finished, everyone clinked glasses. “To us!” Yay!
