Things I Love – Our Photographer

February 22nd, 2010 @ 5:35 pm by Mrs. Argyle

So, I spent the first few months after our engagement scouring the internet for a local photographer the Mr. and I both liked. We already had our venues booked and date set, so it was important that the next thing we booked be our photographer (because I LOVE photography – probably about as much as Miss Hot Wings). I had contacted what seems like a million photographers inquiring about availability, packages, pricing, etc. before we narrowed it down to a handful. After we narrowed it down to about 4 or 5, we spent some time reviewing their bodies of work, their blogs and websites and asking people we knew that had used them before what they were like.

It was at that point when I decided to meet with two of them. I had heard fantastic things about both of them from people we know first-hand, and I (we) really loved their work. Mr. Argyle was not as concerned about how well we clicked with them as I was, so I went alone to both meetings. They each showed me some albums and photos, shared with me their backgrounds and pricing and we chatted over just about everything (I like to talk… a lot). It really was like sitting at a coffee shop with an old friend just catching up. It was great because I really wanted to make sure I clicked with our photographer. After all, she was going to spending one of the most important days of my life with me and documenting it.

Once I met with both of them, we spent a few weeks talking about what we liked about each. We had some criteria for our photographer, regardless:

  1. We wanted a second shooter. I know some photographers tell you that you do not need one, but we WANTED one.
  2. To have some sort of album or product credit with their packages.
  3. That the engagement session was included with the package.

Each of the photographers offered all of the above, which didn’t make the decision easy. In the end, we chose Lisa Hessel. We loved her work, Mom Argyle loved her work, all of her packages included the above AND the package we wanted included unlimited time (score).

We had our engagement photos taken this past Fall and loved them (I’ll share soon, promise). I just love her work. I love when she Tweets photos, puts them up on Facebook and when she updates her blog. And, each time she does this, I seriously fall in love with her work all over again. And, because no post is complete without pictures, some of her work!

This is one of my favorite images by her:

I know it isn’t a super exciting image, but I have had my eye on that photo since day one of stumbling upon her work.

I also love that she loves sun flare. Take note:

And, I love that she loves urban photos, especially in her favorite alley:

And, one more, I promise (at least for now). I love this alley/back street/urban shot:

What are your requirements for your photographer? Any specific qualities or options you’re looking for?

Oooo you had me at sunflares! I’m dripping drool. Please say you have awesome alley pictures to share. Because I really wanted that and forgot to get some in our set.

I wanted lots of hours and I didn’t want a lot of extra “crap” (a few prints here and there, etc) thrown in; I wanted to build my own package and hopefully have a wall for a set of gallery wraps in the future. And I wanted rights to my photos…not so I could print them at Walmart (no thanks), but because I think they should be mine. Because it is my wedding. :) And that’s really the only reason.

Glad you posted. I was just wondering about your photographer today!

I also was insistent on a second shooter! I knew I would want one, with us doing our prep at different locations, and wanting a fauxto booth during the reception. Yours looks great.

I have similar requirements: 2 shooters, unlimited time, and rights to my own pictures. I wanted someone young, fun, and talented. Someone that wasn’t afraid to take risks with us, and who knew how to direct a wedding party! I’m so excited about my photographer!

one of the big things for us when looking for a photog was that we had to “click” with them. they could have th emost amazing portfolio but if we didn’t jive when we met them, it was a big no no. there are a lot that i want in great photos, but i think someone who can tell our story with their photos is the most important thing. the art has to be as meaningful and genuine as it is beautiful because a lot of ppl can take pretty pictures, but we wanted something that connects with us.

We had many of the same requirements, or should I say that I did. I was a bit more adamant about photography than Mr. Swan was.

Love the sun flare!

I want 2 shooters (ideally, but since the wedding’s small and in one spot I might cave on that), unlimited time, rights to my own pictures… and to click with the main photographer. I need someone who will be flexible with my being a serious amateur photographer and likely being a bit fussy. It’s probably good for the photographer that I hardly ever shoot people, though. :> I don’t have as many of my own ideas for how to structure the shots as I would with other subjects.

I know I don’t want too much urban setting, though. I think they can be quite striking, but they’re not me. I prefer nature shots, so I’d want to get out near trees, parks, beaches, gardens, etc. And to make sure the photographer has the talent and experience for that style.

@Miss Hot Wings: It was cloudy on the day we took our e-pics, so the alley was out of question, but it’s definitely in the plan for wedding day!

@JennM21: Glad your excited about your photog - I think that’s pretty important!

@marieta: Natural shots with organic backgrounds are gorgeous. The urban feel just really melds well with the Mr. and I’s style, but I love a good outdoor/nature shot!

Our requirements were: full-day coverage, e-session, 2nd shooter, digital proofs. We got all that and had a little bit left over for prints!

I found the photog before I even had time to think about requirements. I was set before I could even do research. (I did do research, but always came back!)

I love love love Lisa! We almost went with her. It was between her and Paul McAllister and we ended up going with Paul. Paul and I bonded over hockey and Schlafly beer so I knew that he would be a great choice for us since my FI and I love the Blues and Schlafly, but I seriously LOVE Lisa’s work! Good choice! It’s going to be gorgeous! Are you getting a videographer, and if so, who are you going with? I met with one recently and his work was AWFUL and now it makes me not want one :(

@JennM21:
Lisa has (and probably will always be) one of my favorite wedding photographers. . . I am so glad you were introduced to her work.

but I was interested in hearing so many people mention that they wanted the rights to their photos. . . seeing as it is RARE for photographers to offer that, and the few who do will not include it in their packages but require that you purchase them separately.
