About Mrs. Mary Jane

When we left off, I told you what Mr. Mary Jane and I are looking for in a [belated] honeymoon.

With lots of searching, here’s what we found out.

First, let’s talk cruises. Sites like CruiseCritic.com are really valuable for personal opinions regarding specific cruise destinations and ships. See, every ship has different amenities. This is actually something I didn’t know prior to looking into this type of vacation. Also, some cruise lines are aimed at families and children; others aren’t. There are such things as ’adult-only’ cruises also. For example, while I’d heard of Carnival, Princess, and many of the other ’big name’ cruises, I had not heard of Regent, Silver Sea, Seabourn cruise lines. These were very luxurious cruises, but most were too long in time frame to fit our needs.

After a lot of searching and review-reading, we decided that we should steer away from cruises to the Caribbean or Hawaii. Reviews of various cruise lines and routes were full of complaints regarding overcrowded restaurants and decks, little kids screaming everywhere, and overall poor service. We just didn’t want to take the chance.

We started to look at Europe. A few dozen options later, Mr. Mary Jane came upon the Cunard cruise line’s transatlantic cruises. Cunard has a lot of great reviews, and its transatlantic cruises seem to be especially hailed by travelers. While kids are welcome on board the ships, they don’t have a lot of kids’ activities. We were also pretty sure that parents considering a family cruise would be more likely to take them on one of the Carnival or Disney cruises — the ones with on-board water parks and such, that also stop at various beaches and fun spots.

Our favorite Cunard cruise looked like this:

13 Days. New York to London and back again. On one day, we’d be checking out another part of the world. And for 11 days we’d just be chilling, experiencing the open ocean and enjoying the ship’s many amenities. This ship has a spa, various sports, pools, galleries, a wine bar, a planetarium(!), and more. Reviews insisted we should get a balcony room, so this is what we decided to do.

But looking at the travel dates, I determined that I really could not take that much time off of work. So, I came up with another option:

We could do HALF the cruise. The cruise line offers an option of traveling just one way. We could fly to London, spend a few days there, and then depart back to NY for a 7-day cruise. That will actually work!

So that means our finalist #1 is:

2 Days in London, then a 7-day cruise back to the United States on Cunard Cruise Lines Queen Mary 2. We’d have to fly to London, find a nice accommodation there, and would also have to arrange for a way to get from London to the port in Southampton. Then on the ship, we’d have a room with a balcony. Sweet. Back in NYC, we’d catch a flight back to Fargo.

We had some reservations about cruising, however. A big one was my tendency to get motion-sick on anything that moves or appears to be moving. And what about the weather? I was a little worried about it being cold on the ocean. Another concern was the ’bang for our buck’. Sure, you don’t take a transatlantic cruise every day, but we just weren’t 100% sure. We decided to keep our options open.

So how about some all-inclusives? Antigua, maybe. The Cupcakes had a wonderful honeymoon at the Galley Bay resort. We checked a few other options in that area too, and were convinced it was the place for us. Then we found out that you can’t get there from North Dakota or Minnesota in one day’s time. You have to stay overnight in Miami before making the Antigua connection. One of our requirements was that our travel not be drawn out, difficult and crappy, and this was both. We canned Antigua.

St. Martin and Bermuda were also on the list. Bermuda looked inviting and peaceful, especially this cute little 9 Beaches resort. But it was quite expensive, and several reviews complained of the sub-par climate control in the cabanas. I am OK with roughing it sometimes, but we want to be pampered on this trip. 9 Beaches didn’t seem like it was quite right for us, at least not for our honeymoon. I really liked St. Martin, although I kept seeing the same description in various reviews and resort websites: Clothing Optional. I’m not a prude or anything, but I prefer not to see naked strangers on my vacation, I guess. Still, we really liked the idea of a St. Martin vacation. It was a strong contender for a while. At Mr. MJ’s suggestion, I also checked out Brazil. Now let me just say… If I was a rich girl, nanana nanana nananananananana naaaaa. *Whistle*, that’s niiiiiiiiiice. Sigh. Maybe someday…

With the price of Brazilian paradise just a wee bit too high, two options did finally emerge: Excellence Playa Mujeres in Mexico is one. Mrs. Penguin gave it major kudos, and so did over 90% of Trip Advisor reviewers. Lots of amenities, tons of stuff included in the “all-inclusive” rate. And we planned to book the Excellence Club-level room too. Those are ocean-front and include a few more perks. We were pretty much sold on this as our #1 resort pick…

… and then I found out that AMResorts is building two new Secrets resorts side-by-side in Montego Bay. Although Antigua would have been a 2-day trip for us, Jamaica can be reached in one. These resorts look pretty swanky too. Brand new (as in, they haven’t opened yet at the time of this writing). The amenities rival (or surpass) EPM. The price is nice too, over $1000 cheaper for the package deal at EPM, with a better-appointed room [in the Preferred Club’] to boot. For the price, the amenities, and the location (Jamaica is slightly more ’honeymoony’-sounding than Mexico, is it not?), the Secrets Wild Orchid resort is pretty tempting.

Finalist #2: Either Excellence Playa Mujeres (Cancun, Mexico) or Secrets Wild Orchid (Montego Bay, Jamaica). Similar weather, similar amenities. Hmmm. Both adults-only, both all-inclusive. Hmmm indeed.

Take a chance on an unfinished resort that carries a good brand-name (but has yet to actually host a guest)? Or go with a well-reviewed and still fairly new Mexican favorite? Or instead, hop aboard a floating paradise after spending a few days in a beautiful (and unknown, to us) foreign city? Which will we choose? Which would YOU choose?

Sounds like you have some very good options - I don’t think you can go too wrong with any of them! If you’re leaning towards the cruise route though, I’d definitely check to see if that particular ship is large and what other travelers have said about motion sickness on it. I don’t tend to get motion sickness at all, but we recently took a NYC to Bahamas cruise and some of the water (in December, granted) was a little choppy on the first day, and I felt it. I imagine trans-Atlantic might be similar!

My parents just took an anniversary trans-atlantic cruise and LOVED it. All of those options sound lovely, though. I want to go back on our honeymoon, haha.

My in-laws have done the Cunard cruise from London to NY and loved it. I’m not one for cruising, but it sounds more ‘grown up’ than other options. Plus, I highly recommend London (I used to live there) - 2 days is barely enough to scratch the surface, though!

Oh, forgot to mention, my MIL did say that the Cunard ships have giant stabilizers to keep down the rocking on the open ocean. Apparently they’re really cool to see - as is docking in NY harbor. The boat basically does a three point turn to get into the dock in Brooklyn!

We considered a cruise too but then I had a friend recently return from a cruise and complained about the lines for EVERYTHING! The food, the pools, the bars, etc. etc. There were just way too many people. The only spot they could find at the pool was in the topless section lol. Granted, she was on Carnival not a luxury line, but that totally turned me off from cruising as a honeymoon. I hate crowds and I hate waiting in lines even more!! It was something I didn’t consider when we were looking at cruises. Just be sure to try and find out what the experience will realistically be like! I’m sure whatever option you choose will be a-mazing!

Those cruise photos look NOTHING like the cruise that I went on. We’re thinking of going to a cruise out to the Bahamas after Disneyworld. I hope our cruise ship looks like that!!

We’ve been looking at the new Secrets resorts for our honeymoon. My mom forwarded me an email she got from CheapCaribbean.com that had some great deals. I don’t think I can commit though until I see some pictures that don’t have computer people in them :). I really want to see the beach and the pool, and they don’t have any pictures of them up on the site yet. It would be nice to go somewhere brand new.

I think I be inclined to try Jamaica, if you have time to allow for the resort to open later than expected. I was not 100% Happy with our Honeymoon at EPM in Nov. Bad weather was a factor, but were kept poorly informed about the weather and there were few rainy day activities. One can ony have so much s*x and eat so much. We did do the spa one day, it’s great but pricey. I hope you have a wonderful trip where ever you choose to go.

Just wondering, what is your budget? I’d love to consider some of the places you mention, but I don’t want to bother with the research if they’re out of reach.

@Marjojo: We had a max budget of 7k. None of the options above breached that limit… all were between 5 and 6.5k.. Consider also though, that our trip will be 10 days. The resorts especially will cost less for a shorter one. Another consideration is flights. They’re likely going to be cheaper from a major city (or if you don’t have to fly at all to get to the cruise, for example), than they are for us flying from North Dakota.

@Marjojo: OH, and the prices I just listed were for the fanciest or second fanciest rooms on the resort. Most resorts (and the cruises too) had 4 or more different room levels and price points.

I agree 100 per cent with the recommendation of getting a balcony room if you cruise! We did a European cruise for our honeymoon, and it was so awesome to sit out in my bathrobe with my morning coffee and watch the waves go by. Plus, you can usually get your dinner served in room to you. We had sunset dinners on our balcony several times on our cruise. Just be prepared to spend a lot while you’re on the ship. I know you aren’t a drinker, but the spa and other activities tend to add up fast.

Excellence Playa Mujeres! That’s what we chose anyway. :) Can’t wait to see it in person but a very trusted source of ours has been and gave it rave reviews!

The cruise sounds awesome. But that’s only because London is my absolute favorite place in the world. If you do go there, pm me and I’ll give you some recs on things to do and see and places to eat. I definitely recommend staying in London for more than 2 days though. There is so much to do there and you will want more time.
Otherwise I think I would be tempted to take a gamble on the brand new place. It probably wouldn’t be too crowded (hotels usually aren’t when they first open). The only problem is, who knows if they will actually open when they say they are going to. And what if they open but there is still construction going on in some areas of the hotel? That would annoy me. I guess I would want to find these things out before booking.
With 7K you can do a lot! We probably spent about that much on our 11 day Maui honeymoon. And Maui is really expensive.

They both sound great! Definately make sure the new resort is scheduled to open _well_ before your trip, or you could be in trouble. We were considering holding our wedding reception in a brand new hotel that was supposed to open 2 months before our wedding date. They swore up and down it would be done and perfect and great, but we still weren’t 100% set, and sure enough within days of deciding to go with another hotel, they contacted us and said they’d be pushing back the opening by 4 months!

Do you care about Cunard’s cruise demographics? When I was planning my cruise wedding, we were looking at Royal Caribbean (I’ve been on RC’s cruises 4 times)and Cunard. My travel agent strongly advised against Cunard for a wedding because majority of the travelers are 65+ (I guess they’re the ones who are most likely to have that kind of time off).
