Moving is an Adventure

February 23rd, 2010 @ 4:22 pm by Mrs. Parfait

The mister and I knew we wanted to live in the heart of Chicago after we got married, so we decided to start looking around. On our first and only day of apartment-hunting, we came across THE perfect condo. Mr. Parfait made an offer. They accepted; he signed the papers; we started packing.

“Packing?!” you say? Yep, we decided to move in right away—it was way too beautiful and exciting to ignore until April. It was a two-week process from choosing the place to moving in. It’s been a whirlwind, and it’s not over yet!

Wanna see our new place? This is one of my favorite parts:

As mentioned in the title, moving was an adventure. The two of us took turns in ambulances and emergency rooms for injuries that were out of our control. Don’t worry—we’re doing just fine! Here’s the short version:

While moving our belongings from the moving truck to rolling carts, Mr. Parfait stooped down to steady a piece of furniture. Four wooden bed frame pieces were stacked on boxes on the rolling cart next to him. [See where this is going?] Someone else moved the cart, which caused the side of my bed frame to fall… directly onto Mr. Parfait’s head. He needed five staples to close the wound. He’s doing well and recovering like a hero; I’m an emotional mess every time I see the staples.

Of course, when we went shopping for home supplies, I had to stand under a falling product and get myself a matching head injury. I thought I could stick a band-aid on it and be on my merry way, until I started blacking out.

“Blunt head injury and face laceration,” it says on my ER forms.

Just what I need seven weeks before my wedding! But honestly, I’m thankful it’s not seven days. And they put some skin glue on there that acts as a concealer—the jagged red lines that once screamed “Bar Fight!” look more like a pink blob now. :)

Another cell phone pic—my real camera pooped out on me.

My brother joked that we’re a match made in accident-prone heaven, and right now, we look the part. My dad advised us to slow down. We have a huge To Do list for our home and another for the wedding. Both are taking a back seat while we recover and enjoy the first days in our new place.

How much did your first home plans overlap with your wedding plans? Did moving turn into an adventure for you, too?

Oh no!! That’s awful! I’m so glad that you guys weren’t seriously injured & it’s far enough out from your wedding that you’ll be mostly healed up! Poor things!

Oh, so glad you two are okay!

We had a (non-planned) move 4 weeks before our wedding and it was rough, too!

I’m SO jealous! We visited Chicago last year and LOVED the city!!! It’s one of the few cities that we were both “yeah, we could live here”. Alas, too far from all our families!

We started the home buying process last June, and we’re getting married in May. We purchased our home Nov 30, moved in Dec 5, and are still getting settled. Needless to say close to 6 months were completely lost for wedding planning so we are in a mad rush now to get everything done on time! Le Sigh!

I saw a perdy kitchen and here I went responding too quickly! The skin glue sounds a lot better than the staples (I cringe just thinking about it). It’ll heal well and way ahead of time for the wedding. Glad to hear you’re both well … if anything, the story will provide some good storytelling for years to come =)

Ugh, sorry about the head injuries! Your kitchen is gorgeous. It looks like new construction? We closed on a new construction condo in the South Loop this past July. We did things a bit backwards in that we decided to get married in the summer of 2010 so that we could focus on buying a home in 2009. I’m glad that we did. It allowed us to focus our energies on maneuvering the housing market and then getting settled into our new home. Congratulations to you both on becoming home owners.

I hope you guys heal quickly and I hear vitamin e is good on scars. We get married in October and we are building a new house, we are hoping it will be done on time which is the end of august, originally it was the same weekend as our wedding, so we asked the builder to change the date to sooner as we didn’t need the added stress of moving and a wedding in the same month.

Yikes!! The staples would scare the crap out of me too every time I saw them - I’m so sorry for your injuries, but congrats on the new place and I hope everything goes smoothly and accident-free until the wedding!
