Over-relying on Electronics : wedding resources Image Thumb1 image

I interrupt the fun of reporting on wedding-related planning and festivities to bring you this warning. If you are using a lot of electronic files to keep track of your wedding progress, or DIYing your own STDs, invitations, and other paper projects that required you to devote hours upon hours to design your projects, and you have spent money on images from places like istockphoto that do not allow you to re-download your images after a week or so… then this warning is for you!

BACK UP YOUR WORK!!!! PRONTO!

Please learn from my mistake. I haven’t backed up my flash drive since last November. I was in a rush and pulled out my flash without properly ejecting it because I was late for school. And when I got to school to try to pull up a file it said:

“Your drive is not formatted. Would you like to format now?”

Those are NOT the words you want to see. I lost it all! Formatting a drive essentially means erasing it. The techs in my department were able to extract some raw files from the drive. They could not recover a lot of my work, though. They are now re-formatting it and are hoping to be able to extract more from it after that.

I am devastated, to say the least. So please learn from this and back everything up. And by this I mean, save all your work periodically in a separate location from the files you normally use day in and day out.

Yeah I agree! My husband has an external hard drive that I frequently backed up wedding files to. But then things would get confusing because I would have new and old versions of files backed up to the drive and I wouldn’t know which one was the most recent necessarily. So sometimes I still ended up doing my work all over!

I’m SO SORRY! That has happened to me so many times! My laptop broke right before we were due to start making our invites, and I lost the program I had designed them on. It took a month and half before I could get the program back, and now I am WAY behind! Good luck!

I’m so sorry! That was a big fear of mine, so FI bought an external hard drive to back all of our stuff up.

I felt so badly for you when you first brought this up - I hope you were able to salvage some important stuff.

And, after you mentioned it before, I backed mine up - and three days later my jump drive crapped out. THANK YOU MISS HOT WINGS for reminding me to back up my work!

bummer, what a pain — i’ve actually spent all day trying to work from back-up files since my laptop was stolen last week — thank god for online automatic back-ups!

if anyone is looking for a super easy and free back-up option that you essentially just set up and let it run (automatically, every day, at a time you set) try Mozy.com. the first back up takes some time but after that you can be sure it will just do it in the background, which is great for those of us (me!) who just never remember to bring the flash drive along… the first 2GB i think are free but you can upgrade if you have more stuff on your drive.

one of my former professors just told me about another similar service (which he actually thinks is even better) - dropbox.com.
