A Little Registry Surprise…

February 24th, 2010 @ 10:53 am by Mrs. Buttons

So, a funny thing happened during our registry process. Oh no, wait… make that multiple oddities…

One of the first stores that Mr. Buttons and I registered at was Target. I love Target… it is one of my favorite places to shop, and we knew that our guests would be able to find a local store easily if they wanted to go in person. Sooo, Mr. Buttons and I walked the aisles, scanning a few items here and there. When we finished, we handed our scanner back to the customer service rep and were on our merry way.

Two days later, MOH Buttons sends me a message that reads, “is there something you aren’t telling us?”

Me: “Um, no??? What in the heck are you talking about?”

MOH Buttons: “Check your registry.”

I furrowed my brow and quickly navigated to the Target website to investigate.

And there, ladies and gentlemen, staring back at me from my registry…was this:

Yep…some way, some how, the Bumbo Baby Sitter (in pink) had made its way on to our registry. I gasped audibly at the thought of one of my FILs seeing it there, and promptly picked up the phone to call Target’s customer service. Disappointingly, the only thing they told me was, “Well we are sorry, but you can just go online and delete it from your registry.” Gee thanks Target… like I didn’t already know that? Needless to say, I was not pleased with them, but I proceeded to delete the Bumbo from the list and move on with my life.

Oh wait… you didn’t think I was done yet, did you???

Flash forward to last week. Mommy Buttons and I went to Target again to register for some more items (yeah, I only had 4 things on the list…whoops). We came, we conquered, we left the store. The next day, Mr. Buttons came over, and I wanted to show him what I’d registered us for. I pulled up the Target page and scrolled through. And I guess I should have been expecting this… but… I was surprised yet again to see:

A set of baby blankets for newborns! Just what every newlywed needs!

What… the… crap! Are the Target Gods trying to tell us something??? Why, oh why, was this happening AGAIN!?!? DELETE!!!

Well, after some investigation on my part, I was able to figure out what had happened to cause the mix up. Apparently, sometimes the UPCs on the Target shelves are wrong! The first time, when I scanned a wine rack, I got a Bumbo; the second time, when I scanned a memory foam mattress topper, I got baby blankets. Both items that I had WANTED on my registry didn’t appear… so I have to assume that is what happened. Not cool Target, not cool.

Lesson learned here: when you register for items in a brick and mortar store, make sure you check the list online to ensure that the correct items made it on there! Thankfully, I was able to catch these snafus before anyone went to purchase from our registry… but I can’t imagine the conversation that I might have had with the future in-laws if that hadn’t been the case… eeeeek!

Did you have any unwanted items appear on your registries?

OMG. That is BAD. Target needs to do something about that! I would be mortified!

This happened to us a few times too at Target. I always assumed it was because someone was scanning their gun for a baby registry at the same time and perhaps the guns were on the same wavelength. I always thought that her products ended up on my registry and maybe mine ended up on hers?

I haven’t registered yet, but I’ve heard nothing but horror stories from Target, which sucks since I plan to do the bulk of our registering there. Another snafu in their system is that when you buy an item in a brick and mortar store, it doesn’t always shop up on the online registry, even if you have them scan the registry at the register.

That’s unfortunate. I used to work at Target and always told anyone registering to scan the actual item and not the barcode on the shelf as things are not always where they should be. Glad you caught it in time… I can only imagine the awkward calls/emails that would have been made/sent.

This totally happened to us! We would scan the rack and the most random things would come up. And then some things, when we got home and checked said “unavailable”?? We just scanned it! Crazy.

Aggghhhh! I would have been mortified! Target messed up one of ours, but it was only for a second mixer, so it wasn’t all that bad.

That’s hilarious that it ended up being baby items both times :) But what a pain!

I ended up deleting my Target registry. Their website was too messy. And too many items were no longer available. BB&B was by far the best place we registered, and we did that as an after-thought

YES!!!! The same thing happened to me at Target, hiding in our registry was a CRIB!!!!! And also some pacifiers! haha
Good thing I caught it before we let guests know where we were registered!
I wonder if it does it on purpose?

Yeah I’ve heard of that happening before too. We registered at Target & the lady warned us to make srue we scanned the correct barcode, cause sometiems items we dont want will end up on the list. The easiest way to make sure it doesn’t happen is to just make your registry online. That way you can click through the whole site and just hit “add to my registry” and poof you’re done. I constantly added things to our registry online & never had any problems.

You have to admit that it’s kind of funny! :) Surprise everyone! :)
We didn’t have things appear, but rather, things disappeared on us! We had to keep going to back to add them again.

My mouth hit the desk! Wow. What a bad error, twice! Since it’s totally something I would do, I would have been on the horn to let the Gen. Manager know the tags are extremely messed up just for FYI. Makes me wonder if someone switched the tags on purpose—you know, as a bad joke. Very odd that a wine rack AND a mattress topper would both come up with baby items. It’s not like those items would normally be in those areas anyways. I smell something fishy.

OMG this happened to me! I didn’t really check on my registries and at my bridal shower as I was opening gifts, one of them was a package of diapers and a baby blanket, I was confused to say the least! Then, my aunt says “this was on your registry, is there something we should know?!” I had to spend the rest of my shower explaining it must have been a mistake but it was too late, everyone was looking me up and down for a bump.

Funny, but mortifying! I am the kind of girl who would probably freak out and make SURE that there was no possible babies on the way!

The bulk of our registry is at BB&B. We spent 4 hours there & I have spent countless hours online. We are also registered at Target & have a few items on the Crate and Barrel list (affordable items I might add)

It always bothered me when you would go online & they wouldn’t have a picture of what you scanned - now I must admit that I’m a little more weary of those “no picture” items :)

Haha! Too funny. This is definitely a “sign” Miss Buttons…a sign that Target doesn’t have their shiz together ;)

hahaha I had something like this happen too…though we didn’t get baby items…at the end of our registry process I was surprised to see our total came to 19K I was thinking wow we somehow really over did it and blamed the fine china and fancy crystal…well when I got home I saw that we had a ton of items on there that we didn’t register for. I was surprised and spent over an hour deleting items…why on earth would we need 5 different brands of serving utensils…I think maybe someone elses registered items transferred over or something because mid-registry we had a different scanner because the first died.

ps..as far as baby stuff goes…for a while I was getting formula samples and diaper samples sent to my parents address for reasons unknown to this day…it was definately a funny conversation when my mom called asking to make sure I wasn’t hiding something

In defense of Target, when I worked there, we did always tell people to scan the actual item. And not to scan the shelf label. The barcodes on the label are more for store use. It’s definitely a good idea to review it over online though, before you tell people about it.

That is crazy that it happened twice though.
