DIY: Boarding Pass STD

February 24th, 2010 @ 10:29 am by Mrs. Hot Wings

So you just read about our glorious Save the Dates, boarding pass style! Well, I’ll now confess that before I became a blogger and realized that the wedding blogging world would see my lack of creativity, I was a DIY copycat. Yes, I admit it. A copycat. I know, say it isn’t so, but it is. But here is hers.

Here’s mine.

DIY: Boarding Pass STD : wedding diy save the dates tutorial 24 2

I straight up copied Mrs. Piglet’s boarding pass STD. I’m sorry Mrs. Piglet. At the time, I didn’t think I’d have to admit it publicly. I soo admired your creation.

Similar to Mrs. Piggy, I used a boarding pass template from Aylee Bits. I used Adobe Illustrator. I bought the Swirling Flourishes (#6638495) to use as my “waves” and the palm tree (#4392120) from istockphoto.

However, different from Mrs. Piggy, I do not have a Gocco machine and at the time we didn’t have a color printer. So instead of adding color to the actual Design of the STD, I decided to add an embossed Sun and cardstock aqua backing.

So here are some instructions to help others that who have been inspired by Mrs. Piglet.

Materials:

  • Paper Cutter
  • Double Stick Tape
  • Clear Embossing Ink
  • Corner Rounder Punch
  • Gold Embossing Powder
  • Sun Stamp
  • Embossing Heat Gun
  • Business Card Magnets

Instructions

After designing your STD to your liking, print 3 per page on Linen Cardstock. Make sure your images bleed out past the cut marks to ensure some room for error.

Use a paper cutter to ensure straight cutting. If you need to error while cutting, I suggest error towards cutting inside the STD outline.

DIY: Boarding Pass STD : wedding diy save the dates tutorial 71 7

Use your corner rounder on all 4 corners.

DIY: Boarding Pass STD : wedding diy save the dates tutorial 81 8

Hand cut the little “butts” on the left hand side of the boarding pass. I was unable to figure out a different way of cutting them.

Embossing the Suns

Place the STD on top of a scrap piece of paper. Use clear embossing ink to stamp your sun onto the STD. I just eyeballed all of them.

DIY: Boarding Pass STD : wedding diy save the dates tutorial 101 10

Pour an ample amount of embossing powder on the wet ink, then dump the excess onto your scrap paper.

DIY: Boarding Pass STD : wedding diy save the dates tutorial 112 11

Use your embossing heat gun to melt the embossing powder.

Final Steps

Use double-stick tape to mount your STD onto cardstock. Use your paper cutter to cut it off.

DIY: Boarding Pass STD : wedding diy save the dates tutorial 131 13

Round the corners of the cardstock. I let Mr. Hot Wings do this because the cardstock took much more pressure than the linen cardstock.

DIY: Boarding Pass STD : wedding diy save the dates tutorial 141 14

Cut the Business Card Magnets into 1/4”-1/2” strips. I was able to get about 10 per magnets per card. Just eyeball it; precision is unnecessary in my opinion.

DIY: Boarding Pass STD : wedding diy save the dates tutorial 151 15

Peel off the magnet and stick to each side of the STD.

DIY: Boarding Pass STD : wedding diy save the dates tutorial 161 16

Et voila! A magnet STD.

Are you a DW bride? What do your save the dates look like?

I have been patiently waiting for this post! Those boarding passes are super cute and I now want to abandon my previous STD idea for this one! Could you please give us a cost breakdown?

We are all inspired by what we see in the hive and around the web, so don’t be ashamed! I can’t tell you how many ideas I got from weddingbee. And, they look great! Great tutorial!

awesome tutorial, wings! no shame in taking inspiration from the bee–that’s what it’s for, right? they look great–smart call on using black ink on colored paper and the stamp to get multiple colors without a color printer!

You didn’t steal them - you took a pattern and made it your own! And I think that they look great! I have to admit that I found a google image of invites that I loved, and not being able to afford fancy ones, I’m making my own version of them. Slightly different pattern, and different colors, but I’m not ashamed - I’ve put a TON of work into making them & they will turn out to be great!

Love them! I hold my embossing powder and heat gun closely to my heart because they always give a little pizzaz to any paper good. :)

I have the same paper cutter! It’s compact but effective in getting the job done.

The STDs look great!

As a DW-bride to be and a boarding pass STD’er, I had read (and used after a while due to being tired) a nail clipper to make the edges rounded for the “butts”.
