Mrs. Nachos's Picture
Mrs. Nachos, Chicago/St. Thomas Age and Occupation: 33, Commercial Real Estate & Hairstylist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 36, Radio Producer Engagement Date: May 22, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2010 Venue: Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort, St. Thomas About Me: I'm a happy, laid back city girl that can find the silver lining in any situation. An optimist at heart, my motto is to turn your "what ifs?" into "so whats!". My fiance is a radio producer and the biggest Cubs fan you'll meet - our apartment decor definitely shows it. He and I grew up next door to each other and because of it, we have the best home videos and easiest holiday dinners. We are planning an intimate wedding in the Virgin Islands and a cocktail party in June for 150 of our closest friends.
About Mrs. Nachos

The last piece I needed for the centerpieces was flowers for the big vases. This proved to be a challenge – every time I walked into Jo-Ann Fabrics or Michaels, of course I found flowers, but not exactly what I was looking for. I looked around online and still couldn’t find what I was picturing in my head. That’s when Mr. N hopped on his computer and started looking at things I hadn’t thought of—leis, garland, etc. Such a smart Nacho! I figured leis wouldn’t work because I’d want to cut off those little plastic doodads in between the flowers, but then they’d all be sitting on top of each other. Scott found a website, 1888flowermall, and they had pretty looking garland for pretty cheap! I found these and scooped them right up…

They were inexpensive and I thought they’d look pretty as-is in the vases. But then I got them and they’re, well, leafy.

In these pictures they don’t look too bad, but in person, they do look a little on the plastic-y side, and they’re very pink, not lavender. Too many leaves, too many stems. But I figured, I have them, so let’s see what I can do with them. So, last night I started pulling them apart. I basically took the flowers off the stems and attached 2 together with wire. I’m going to have to invest in some green floral wire. All I had at the time was a little piece of thick black wire, so bear with me. I tested it out in a vase, and here’s a sneak peek of the large vase in a finished centerpiece…

Not bad! I may have to get more garland because I’m not sure I have enough flowers for 15 vases, but that shouldn’t be a problem—we have plenty of time. And I’ll be stringing green wire through the entire stem so I can shape it better because it floated just under the candles and I’d feel better if it was sitting below the water level. Plus I’ll be able to hide the stems in the vase a little better if I have more control over the shape of the stem. So now that I have all of my pieces, I promise, a mock-up is a-comin’!

Have you ordered something online that wasn’t quite what you expected once you saw it in person?

I think those are lovely. And just an idea to make them more interesting–use seltzer water instead of still water to add bubbles! :-)

I like that a lot! What if you had some sort of anchor? Like a pretty rock or something? I don’t know what that would look like but it would help it to not float to the top and possibly move the candles around.

I like the “doctored up” flowers in the submerged centerpiece you made - looking forward to the full mock-up!

My pashminas! they looked pale blue on the website, but are more of a medium blue. I’m not ashamed to say that I cried when I saw them and refused to take them out of the box for 2 days (the return policy was pretty prohibitive - i.e., I’d lose half my return money because of shipping).
But, I’ve decided to go with the flow - I told the ladies they aren’t want I wanted for them, but it’s what they’re getting :-)

Can’t wait to see the full mock up. I think the flowers do look better in the water and vase.

Wow, I’m so impressed with how the mockup turned out Nachos! It looks great even though, like you, I was dubious about it from your photos of the actual product :) Way to make it work and turn out beautifully! Can’t wait to see everything put together.

They look really good in the water! I have had problems with fake flowers looking too plastic too, but the water covers it very well in your centerpieces!

nice! glad they worked out well after you removed the foliage. i had a ‘not what i expected’ outcome with my hair flower. Got it off ebay, and it looked cheap when i received it. Thankfully it was pretty in pictures, so it went on a book (in lieu of ring pillow) instead of my hair!
