Hawaii Will Have to Wait

February 24th, 2010 @ 6:27 pm by Mrs. Pretzel

Mr Pretzel was very clear about where he wanted us to honeymoon.

Prior to moving to the West Coast, Hawaii seemed like a very far away place and very expensive. When I moved here I was astonished how frequently West Coasters will vacation in Hawaii. It seems so close and yet neither Mr P nor I have made the trip. Mr Pretzel got the closest to going to Hawaii.

Very early in our relationship he was planning a trip with friends. He even had the plane ticket. Then their condo situation became “sketchy” and they all decided to cancel the trip. He had a fully paid ticket and a year to use it. Our relationship got more serious and I wasn’t in the position to take a Hawaii vacation because I didn’t have enough vacation time. You will notice that my lack of vacationing is quite a trend.

The year passed and Mr Pretzel’s airfare expired. *insert big sad face* A number of months later when Mr Pretzel and I started to discuss our wedding he knew where we were going to go and I was in agreement. However, my vacation bank had other ideas.

With a shower in Indiana, his brother’s wedding, our wedding, and our Midwest party, my vacation days were getting eaten up fast. I pulled out the calendar and added up the days. For a honeymoon, I could take 3 or maybe 4 days of vacation. We discussed if this would allow us to “do” Hawaii properly and we agreed that we would prefer to spend at least 7 days in Hawaii.

There was another thing that was bothering us about Hawaii. Our wedding is in July, when the weather is absolutely beautiful in the Northwest. We would rather escape to Hawaii in winter when the weather here is crappy. It seemed like a waste to leave the beauty here. So, it was decided. We would postpone our Honeymoon in Hawaii until winter 2011 and do a local, shorter mini-moon.

Have you postponed your honeymoon? Are you planning a local minimoon or staycation instead?

We are getting married in May and we are not going on out honeymoon until the end of August. I am in a Family Practice Residency and am also limited in vacation days! But we are going to Hawaii too. Yay!

We’re doing somewhat of a mini-moon: the night of the wedding, we’ll be staying in a hotel suite (I’m being “ebil” and decamping to said suite the night before, just to get away from the circus and he’s not allowed to come. >:D), but it will be back to home and the kitties the next day. But Labor Day weekend, we’ll be at the full-on honeymoon with 40,000 or so other geeks at DragonCon in Atlanta, GA. It’s where we finally met for the first time after chatting online for over 3 years, and thus a romantic thing for us. ;)

We thought about Hawaii too but it is expensive and we’re on the Northeast side of the good ol’ USA! We do want to go some day, not sure when, but instead our honeymoon will be on the Gulf of Mexico side of Florida. Hope you found a nice mini moon.

It would have been so hard to postpone our honeymoon (and wouldn’t have worked as well for use since marriage meant a move and new job for me so there was a natural break in between)
but I’m glad you’re doing a mini moon and will get to HI soon!

We will probably spend our honeymoon in the Redwoods. There’s a resort in Mexico I’ve wanted to go to since I was 15 (I’m 49 now) but we will definitely have to save up for that.

we’re doing a mini moon too! FI is a landscaper so June is his peak money making month. So, we don’t want him to lose to much of that moolah! Since we live in Michigan, we’ll be taking a couple of days (probably 2) at Mackinaw Island right after the wedding. Then we were planning to take our real honeymoon in winter 2011, but all of the places we like seem to be booked up at that time. So, I’m hoping I can talk him into late August/early September before classes start.

Some of my friends did the same thing… they were married last August…took a mini-moon in the San Juan’s for a few days and will go on their real Honeymoon to Mexico this April. I think it’s a great idea. You’re totally right the PNW is way too nice to leave in the Summer…it makes much more sense to go on a tropical vacay during the gray, rainy Seattle months!

That is the beauty of Hawaii though…you can go in December and it’s still wonderfully beautiful out.

@mgli2006: I love Mackinaw! That is where mr P and I joined his family for a big family vacation. My first time meeting the future in-laws! Have fun!

@LISA8285: AMEN! It would be a shame to not enjoy the PNW this summer.

We’re putting off our honeymoon for the winter months too. You will need all of that vitamin D when the weather gets bad :P

Several of the big vacations we have taken have been during the summer months, and that has occurred to me a time or two that it’s not the time you really crave a getaway from the beautiful PNW weather. I know what you mean, too, about Hawaii seeming like the most exotic fantastic location in the world when you don’t live on the west coast! Living here, it just seems like an ordinary vacation destination or something. I know you guys are going to have an amazing time there when you do get to go.

good choice! makes complete sense- I’ve had to save up vacation days for the honeymoon and second reception too- it’s such a bummer!

Good choice! July and August are the only months with nice weather in Seattle, you wouldn’t want to miss those!

I agree re: escaping in Winter! If I could see past *this* winter, we might have decided to honeymoon in Winter 2010/11, but I’m so done with this winter that I’m ready to go NOW! (And the closest to “now” is the week after the wedding!)

If it helps you guys, Mr. Valhalla and myself also live on the West Coast, and we visited Oahu for only 4 days. I felt this was sufficient amount of time to see Oahu, but if you want to see more of the Hawaiian Islands, go for longer (and hence delay your honeymoon). All I can say though, is we were so enamored with Hawaii we can’t WAIT to go back and see the other Islands… as a matter of fact, we might be making plans for next winter already…

We’re going to do a stay-cation type minimoon right after the wedding (just lounge around the apartment and relax) because we can’t get away right after the wedding. I’ve got a college reunion 2 weekends after the wedding, and I’m MOH for my MOH the weekend after that. I don’t have lots of vacation days, either, but luckily my office lets you take unpaid vacation for big things like this, so we want to milk it :)

It’s true about the West Coast thing–I grew up here in Seattle and have been to Hawaii twice. It was a grand time, but it has never seemed all that exotic!

We’re delaying our honeymoon because I’m in medical school and will be back in clinic on Monday (our wedding is on a Friday night). So, no mini-moon either because we’ll want to spend the rest of the weekend while our family is in town.

But a delayed honeymoon we will have! We’re deciding between Argentina and Italy (leaning toward Argentina).

For us, a mini-moon was def an option, but we choose Hawaii as our destination because our wedding in July. Hawaii has perfect weather all year round :) We were actually engaged in Vieques, Puerto Rico this past May and it was already bordering on too humid. The closer you are to the tropical line, the more constant the temperature. Also, for those with July weddings looking into Mexico - be sure to check up on the mosquito situation.

Yep. We’re going over 10 months after. Can I still call it a honeymoon? Hmm…
