About Ms Potato Chips

For a while my mom would call me and say things like, “I can’t sleep at night, thinking about getting your dress altered.” She was very, very worried. (She worries a lot.)

She was anxious about:

  • my dress being five gazillion yards too long on my 4’11″ frame
  • how the tiers of my dress would look once the tailor hacked off the five gazillion extra yards
  • the top being too big
  • the chiffon material having too many tears and pulls in it (who knows how many running brides tried it on before me?)
  • the small tear in the back (see above; maybe there was a cat fight in my dress’s past?)
  • the dirt on the train (definitely a cat fight, of epic proportions)
  • how long it might take a tailor to fix all these problems, if they were able to at all!

I wasn’t terribly at all concerned about any of these things, but I didn’t want to keep my mom up at night, counting silk-sheathed sheep to sleep.

So we made an appointment at a small tailor shop a couple weeks ago.

The tailor fixed my dress in a week. Sorry, that was a lot of lead-up for very little return. Can I make it up to you with a goofy self-portrait?

It’d been a while since I tried on my dress and it looked totally different when the length actually ended at my feet!

I had sorta forgotten that my dress has a wee train. I love the bustle (which is a simple, single snap hidden in the fabric). The bustle is good for shimmying. I tried.

Woo-hoo, dress complete! The tears are stitched up, the straps stay in place, the hemline is just right…and, most importantly, MamaP can get her 40 winks!

Were you worried about dress alterations? Or was the alteration process smooth sailing?

I am so glad I’m not the only one whose mom worries about alterations. She is convinced the hem will be crooked and the bustle will be wrong! She even tried to get me to order my dress in a petite (which would make the torso too short - I’m in between a regular and a petite). Guess I know where I get my worrying from :)
By the way - your dress looks great!

You are so lucky that your dress came with a bustle built in! The hardest part of my alteration process was figuring out a way to bustle my dress.

Thanks ladies!
@Miss Pinot Grigio: My tailor actually sewed the snap in. I have no idea how it works, but you can’t even see it when it is un-bustled!
@Miss Rainbow: Thanks! One of my biggest worries about the dress!

Yes, totally worries. I’m holding out since it’s a bit early and I still need to get on this weight loss plan I’ve been MEANING to start. Your dress is beautiful!

woohoo! glad that your mom is able to sleep in peace now–and for good reason, the dress looks gorgeous and sounds like there weren’t any unpleasant surprises during the alteration process.

looks great! yes, i definitely am worried about my alterations. the last time i tried on my dress it wasn’t laying flat across my stomach, so that i looked like i have a poofy belly. i really hope that can be remedied.
