Mrs. Hot Wings's Picture
Mrs. Hot Wings, Chicago/San Diego Age and Occupation: 28, Professor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Instructor Engagement Date: December 20, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Ocean View Villas/Jasmine Seafood Restaurant About Me: I am a psychology grad student living in Chicago and planning my wedding to a fellow psych grad student. I am a Sunny So-Cal bred gal who trudged across the country to follow her love of psychology and ended up finding a partner in the process. I am overly passionate about anything I involve myself with. I am an activist, a foodie, a reality TV watching junkie, an over-analyzer, a photography obsesser, and am utterly cheesy to the core. This is a story of what happens when a boy and a girl meet, fall in love over academic dorkiness, and a shared love for life. We (mostly I) are planning our semi-destination wedding in my hometown of San Diego. We are excited to bring our families and friends together from across our lifespans to celebrate our future in a grand 400+ person culturally blended affair!

DIY: Boarding Pass Enclosure

February 25th, 2010 @ 8:35 am by Mrs. Hot Wings

DIY: Boarding Pass Enclosure : wedding diy save the dates 1 IMG_1834

Boarding pass STDs must have an envelope if they are to be mistaken for the real deal, right? Right! So after finishing our actual boarding pass, we created some enclosures using Mrs. Piglet’s template.

DIY: Boarding Pass Enclosure : wedding diy save the dates 2 IMG_2653

To create these, you’ll need the following items:

  • Paper
  • Ruler
  • Bone Folder
  • Paper cutter (w/ scoring blade and regular blade)
  • Stamp saying
  • Palm tree punch
  • Embossing powder
  • Heat embossing gun
  • Pen/pencil
  • Stamp-a-majig

Directions:

(1) I marked each sheet of paper with a pencil mark to indicate where the scoring would happen. So adding it up and using a rule, I marked the 3.75” and the 7.50” lines. The lines will end up on the inside of the enclosure, so no worries.

Hint: Make sure when you turn the paper over, you go backwards matching the lines. So you’ll mark 3.5” and 7.25”. If you don’t get what I’m saying, try it a couple times and pay attention to if the marks are lining up.

(2) I used a scoring blade to score the folds.

Hint: Always consider error variance (hee hee… stats nerd anyone?). Meaning, if a helper is going to make a little bit of a mistake, in what direction of the marks are they allowed to error? With this project, errors should be toward the edges of the paper. So if you can’t cut ON the lines exactly, you should miss the line toward the edges of the paper.

(3) Use the bone folder to crease the folds.

(4) Use the paper cutter to cut the red dashed line in the picture above. Make sure that the crease meets the cutter, slant the paper, and cut. I didn’t mark lines for this process because I figured it didn’t need to be exact. They all turned out OK, in my opinion.

Hint: DO NOT throw away all the triangle scraps you will end up with at the end of this step. In a later tutorial of my invitations, I’ll show you what I did with all of them. Always remember that Scraps = GOLD!

(5) Use double-stick tape to secure a straight edge at the end of the enclosure.

(6) Punch the image on the bottom front of the enclosure. Again, no measurement. I eyeballed it. Warning: These little punches are hard to punch through cover weight cardstock. We used the metallic paper so it was pretty easy.

(7) Use a stamp of a majig to ensure straight stamping of your saying. Place the bottom T of the stamp-a-majig flush to the paper and covering the palm tree punch. Ink the stamp, place the stamp inside the stamp-a-majig, and press the stamp down to make sure it stamps evenly.

Hint: Instead of using the clear Versa ink I used on the actual STDs, I used a Big and Juicy raised felt pad-black ink with gold embossing powder. I had it in my craft stash and found it to work pretty well with embossing. I found the clear ink plus gold powder didn’t show up dark enough to be able to easily read the saying. The black ink + gold powder was perfection.

(8) Pour on the embossing powder and tap off the excess powder.

(9) Melt the powder with your embossing heat gun.

(10) Pat yourself on the back and rub the embossed loveliness with pride! You did it!
