About Mrs. Hot Dog

Total Square

February 25th, 2010 @ 3:07 pm by Mrs. Hot Dog

In case you hadn’t noticed, I’m sort of a DIY-dork. And darn proud of it, too! ;) Part of this title comes from my love of knitting and deep desire to learn to quilt. I’ve wanted to learn how to do this for a while now, but really haven’t had the time or excuse (but who really needs an excuse to learn a new craft??) until now.

Ever since I decided on our favors (more on that later!), the wedding has a taken a very pleasant “down home” feel. I’m really excited about it! I wouldn’t quite call it western, but it is definitely country… :)

Think “Spread the Love”. Think hints of paisley and crochet. Think… QUILT. Guestbook. That’s right. A quilt guestbook instead of the traditional paper-pen deal. Take squares of different fabric and several fabric pens, and add to that the well-wishings and great advice from loved ones and you have my new favorite (for now!) part of the wedding!

I am so smitten! I particularly like the last one for some reason… Don’t they all look so cute and… country?!

I was also thinking of tablescapes… I’ll tell you all about the guest tables later, but for the head table, I’m thinking another quilt… As a tablecloth! What do you think?

Beautiful! I want to have a well wishes quilt too, but we are sorta eloping. Do you think people would write something on the fabric if I mailed it to them with our announcements?

For my shower everyone brought a square of fabric or clothing that would mean something to me the giver or both and my mom made my husband and I a quilt.

We did a guestbook quilt for our wedding too! We wanted something other than the traditional book that, in all honesty, we probably would never look at again. It was pieced together by my husband’s aunt and turned out to be a beautiful keepsake that we will treasure forever. The most fun part was waiting to read all of the notes to us until after the quilt was finished. I hope yours turns out to be as much of a success as ours did!

Wonderful idea!

I actually did this for my best friend’s wedding a couple of years ago. Her reception was actually on a dinner train, so it was somewhat easier to keep everyone together to explain it, but a table with directions would work as well!

I handed out precut squares as well as fabric markers and asked people to draw or write or quote whatever they wanted. We ended up with some wonderful words of advice and amazing drawings! It took me awhile to put together, but I was finally able to give it to the couple for their 1 year anniversary and they loved it :)

I too have a desire to learn to quilt, so this idea warms my heart. I love it!

Ah! I’ll live vicariously through you - I tried to convince Mr. GP this was a good idea, but it was a no go. I think it will turn out beautifully though, and can’t wait to see it!

My mom made us a guest quilt. We has a basket with the squares in it for guests to sign and now my mom is putting it together for us! I love how creative some people were with it. We have at least 5 squares that are lovely drawings! I love this idea because we will use and look at a guest quilt a lot more than a guest book.

I saw that 2nd quilt on MSW last month and am totally planning to do it in lieu of a guestbook (though in addition to our guest platter…). I figured I’ll collect the squares then bust out my knitting for dumbing books and actually learn how to knit…

My mom made us a beautiful signature quilt, with a picture of J and I, and it was SO beautiful. It will hang in our hallway in our new apartment, with all the signatures of our wedding guests on it. We love it!
