A Flower For Your Hair

February 26th, 2010 @ 1:54 pm by Mrs. Sewing

Well friends, throw me on the DIY hair flower bus, because I couldn’t resist!

I loved the expensive hair flower I tried on at my hair trial. Could I make something similar?

The pro-flower I tried on!

I searched around, and decided to use this tutorial by Mrs. Pineapple.

First, I gathered some supplies: a hot glue gun, a fake $1 rose from Michaels, a hair clip and an assortment of beads.

Next, I took the rose apart.

The reason I wanted to pull it to pieces was to get these plastic “structures” out. After I removed these, the flower “flopped” into place much more softly.

I glued the pieces back together, and finished by adhering some little beads to the middle.

Lastly, I added a clip to the back, again with hot glue. I initially tried with my favorite, 3 inch long clip.

However, the flower didn’t lay quite right. I peeled it off and tried a smaller clip.

How’s it look?

I think it came out alright, but it doesn’t really look like the gardenia I tried on. It’s slightly bigger, and not nearly as ruffly. Maybe next time I should buy a gardenia silk flower, and not a rose (good job, Sewing). Or maybe I should just make another fabric flower like the kind I plan on putting on my dress. But at least I know that the method is sound, and it really didn’t take very long - only a few minutes once the glue gun had warmed up!

Are you using a hair flower? Will you make your own, or skip the hassle?

It looks good, but if you’re set on the gardenia, go buy one :) $1 isn’t too much of a loss!

It is a hassle. Haha. Although you made this look easy! I am attempting to make my own but, like you, am experimenting with different flowers. Good job!

I still like it even if it’s not your gardenia. Thought about maybe using two roses instead of just one to get more ruffles? Maybe use smaller roses?

I love hair flowers. LOVE them. :D

Looks really nice!
I think I might go with a real flower. A red gerbera daisy. My wedding flowers, obviously.

I didn’t use a hair flower, but wish I had! I think yours turned out great, but I see what you mean about it not being like the one from your hair trial. I have a good feeling you’ll either make it work, or make something else equally as awesome! :)

I tried making a couple, and ended up buying from an Etsy seller in the end.

I made one out of roses, and another out of gardenias, like you are saying. It was easy to make them, but the problem was, I liked the gardenia one better, but they weren’t white-white — they were ivory-ish. And it was off enough that it didn’t go with the dress. I didn’t like the roses one, either, because it wasn’t as soft like I wanted. Good luck! You are so fun to follow!!

Nicely done, good job! If you are interested, though, Etsy does have some fascinator options that don’t break the bank: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=40365229

Love it!! I used the same tutorial from Mrs. Pineapple and it turned out great!! It’s way cheaper to DIY and you get to be picky with the way it looks!

I totally did this exact thing!! I used a peony instead of a rose and it turned out great! It’s big, but I love it!

I find that yours looks better than the one you tried! How about trying 2 x flowers and combining them into one if you prefer a fluffier look?

I bought a Gardenia online via Ebay which is similar to the one you tried. I didn’t wear it in my hair in the end because I felt too conscious that it was HUGE and DIYed one from an Ikea faux flower.
