About Mrs. Star

If you’re in the firm “we really don’t need a videographer when we already have an awesome photographer” camp, then I totally get it. I was there. And then I saw wedding videos like Mrs. Kitten’s, cried, and changed my mind, of course. I’m SO glad I did.

I cry pretty much every time I watch it.

So now you’re probably thinking, ‘Oh, sure, Star, I’d love to get a videographer, but there’s no way our budget can withstand one more assault.’ Well, here are my tips for bending that budget into submission. It was probably asking for it anyways.

1. Get a videographer as a gift. One of Mr. Star’s close family friends asked us to tell them what we really wanted as a gift that would remind us of them whenever we used it. The perfect answer was for them to help us get a wedding video. They loved the idea, and we really do think of them and their generosity every time we watch it. Thank you, Cindy and Bill! There are almost always friends or family members or a group of guests (like your college buddies) who don’t know what to get you, but want to make it memorable. Capitalize on this and they’ll feel special, too.

2. Use professionals looking to break into the wedding business. We knew we couldn’t afford standard NYC videographer prices, so we posted an ad on the big ol’ Craigslist looking for a student or recent grad who wanted to work for us. What we weren’t expecting is that we had several professionals who had done camera work in other areas like commercials or television and were looking to get into the wedding industry get in touch with us and offer to help. They wanted wedding footage for a reel, we got a pro who already knew how to make a great video. The key to this is making sure he or she has examples of their work, even if it isn’t wedding-related. We could see that our videographer did nice work, despite having no wedding experience. This probably works best if you’re in a metro area.

3. Cut down on coverage time and fancy extras. We only asked our videographer to film for about four hours, which covered all the important stuff for us — the ceremony (especially our vows), the parade, and our first dance were what we really wanted captured on video. She offered to come a bit earlier and film me getting ready, which was an awesome bonus. Also, you don’t need a million DVD copies or a fancy intro title if you’re trying to cut costs. You can burn your own DVDs!

If you are in the NYC area and want to check out our awesome videographer, head on over here. She did such a great job for us and we couldn’t be more pleased.

And promise me you’ll think about the videographer bit? ;)

After seeing these amazing highlight videos, and realizing that our wedding video could be something that people will watch (instead of four hours of unedited VHS that will make a great doorstop in our first house), we expanded our budget to include an awesome videographer I had seen before. I’m so excited, and I think it was totally the right decision - and I was with you, Star, in the “no need for a videographer with an awesome photog!” camp!

I’m on my phone so I’m not able to watch your video, but I’m sure it’s gorgeous! I’ve been wanting a videographer so bad, so this post has inspired me to post an ad on Craigslist!

Ladies, Anyone can have a video…even you!! :-)
I was inspired by Mrs Joey’s use of craigslist to get deals.
I posted that we could only afford $300. We got 10 emails from people. We ended up getting an AMAZING video for $500…which they normally change about 1k for
So if you were moved by watching this video and dreaming of having one of your own…….don’t dream, do it! It is VERY possible in this economy to make deals. Post an ad on craigslist…be prepared for a few hater emails about how cheap you are….but you will also get some real responses.
Don’t sell yourself short and assume that a video is always 1-2K+. It can be done!!

I guess I’m in the minority, but I just don’t agree. We spent a fortune on our photographer, and I think that will do it justice. Your cake is GORGEOUS though. Congrats & Best Wishes!

Wow, this video really made me regret that we didn’t have a videographer, especially because my husband sang me a song he wrote and played the guitar. I guess when it came to videography, I always just pictured the same old boring wedding video I’d never watch more than a few times. Looking back though, I think the photos were and will always be so much more important to me, and I really did have to make a lot of sacrifices to get the photographer I always dreamed of

I’m more excited about the wedding video than our pictures. Sure, I’ll love having beautiful pics and an album, but I feel that a wedding video shows more of the emotional vibe. Plus, I want to be able to see our ceremony vows since I have a feeling I’ll be so nervous I won’t remember any of the ceremony. And I definately want to see our first dance, all the guests dancing, etc. I think wedding videos are awesome!

Dammit, Star. You made this tough girl get all misty-eyed.

Lovely video, and after viewing the photographs you posted, I think it’s a great addition to further documenting the day.

I can see why you cry watching this, it made me misty-eyed! You were seriously such a stunning bride and you and your hubby were absolutely glowing in the video! My favorite part has to be the side by side of both of your faces as you walked down the aisle. That’s a moment I don’t have have recorded from my wedding, so it was so awesome to see yours!

And I agree, I hope everyone considers getting a videographer if they can!
