About Mrs. Sushi

Big Island Minimoon

February 26th, 2010 @ 12:48 pm by Mrs. Sushi

Our wedding was my third trip to Hawaii in 4 years (Mr. Sushi’s 2nd trip). Between that and having lived on Oahu in my younger years, I have already done almost everything there is to do on Oahu… three times over. This time I wanted to do something a lil’ different, so Mr. Sushi and I decided to fly to the Big Island for a few days.

We stayed at the Kilauea Military Camp (KMC), which is a cottage and resort based at for active and retired military. Not only was is super affordable, but it is located right in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We had a cute 1 bedroom cabin with a jacuzzi tub and fireplace, ALL to ourselves.

Just like on Oahu, the weather was less than desirable. Initially, we had planned to hike the volcano ourselves, but since it was cold, windy and very wet, we ended up taking a van tour instead. We were the only ones on the tour though; it was like we had our own personal tour guide that day. :)

Craters, lava, museums… a nice way to spend a cool rainy day

Pele, the volcano goddess

We walked though a 500-year old lava cave formed when an underground channel of molten lava drained from its cooled walls forming a massive, hollow chamber. A rain forest awaits at the other end of the tunnel.

KMC had a lot of indoor activities (thank goodness!), so besides spending time alone in the cabin (ahem!), we had some drinks and went bowling (they also had an arcade and a movie theater).

Yeah… we suck. Mr. Sushi’s Wii bowling skills are no match to real bowling.

After a week+ of family and friends, it was really nice to take it easy and spend some alone time together. And then… it was back to the “real” world. Blah!

Ohhh Hawaii…’til next time.

It looks like you had a great time! I’m similar in my bowling “skills” — I’m definitely not very good! :)

OMG! Awesome :) First of all I want to say Congratulations on your marriage! :) We haven’t decided where we want to go for our honeymoon! Hawaii has been an option though we just didn’t know where to stay! Then we were thinking Mexico since my FH mom has a timeshare with a gorgeous house. I’ve always wanted to try Hawaii and my hunny is a Marine(enlisted) so we could go stay at this place you stayed at! Can you message me any information please!

I went to the big island for work in december, and was super excited to visit the volcanoes national park!
unfortunately, it rained the ENTIRE TIME. ugh >.<
the main crater even looked like Mordor - super steamy, and very very dark and sinister. hehe :)

Aloha Mrs. Sushi! I’m getting married on Oahu in May and then we are heading to the Big Island for a few days as well. I was wondering who you used for your van tour? Could you PM me the info? Mahalo!

I thought Volcano National Park was SO COOL!!! That might have been my second favorite part of the trip. Um, the first favorite part was the guava butter at our hotel.

You know, I always feel that cold rainy weather is a lot more romantic that hot hot weather - more cuddling and snuggling that way. Looks like a great mini-moon!
