More Success at Garbageland

February 26th, 2010 @ 10:38 am by Mrs. Hot Dog

A little while ago I went to a few garage sales with my buddy Brittany. Neither of us really had anything particular in mind; that’s the best way to garage-sale!

We went to a couple that were busts. Then we stopped at one small, unassuming house and found the jackpot! Well, OK, a mini-jackpot. I walked away with 16 BRAND NEW white, round paper lanterns (with cords and bulbs), 2 metal (square) hanging lanterns, and a large wicker basket for… $2!! Yes, TWO DOLLARS!

From the rest of the sales I purchased an 8-piece glass tumbler set. It has cute stars on the rims. I’m not entirely sure what I’ll use it for, but for $2 it was a steal. Some $0.25, different-colored, cross-stitch fabric may serve as place mats. There’s also a cute jar and blue triangle jug that I may use for some flowers… who knows. :)

Are you a big garage-saler? Do you have any tips for finding good ones in your area?

Garage sales are the best places to find great deals! I’m a huge fan of them! I just wish there were more of them held during the colder months! I want to go hunting but no one is selling!!! Love the things you’ve found—-those lanterns are gorgeous!

My family used to do an annual garage sale, and we’d try our best to set the start-time at a reasonable time of morning…inevitably though, there would be people lurking in our yard at 6am, even if we were clear it wouldn’t start until 9am! Some folks take their garage sale-ing very seriously!

That being said, you’re right…you can really find some gems! I recently found these awesome clay planters for 50 cents apiece. So far I haven’t found any great wedding-decor items, but I’m definitely going to be on the lookout over the next couple of months!

My fiance I and I garage-saled so much this last summer after moving into a house together. We were walking from sale to sale in our neighborhood once when we ended up with so much loot that he had to run home and get the car.

My usual strategy is to check Craigslist in the morning for sales and make a little list and plan a route, including ones that I saw signs for the previous day.

Garage sales are definitely a summer thing here in Seattle, so I look forward to looking for wedding stuff once the weather warms up.

We’ve garage saled and done the flea markets looking for vintage cake platters for our reception. It’s been fun going with my mom and sisters on Saturday mornings.

I got 72 awesome round votives for $10 from a house up the street but that’s about it. I really don’t have the patience for it. I’d much to sit at home and browse craigslist

At least in So Cal garage sales are year round so you can always jump in the fray.

WOW! Those are some awesome deals! I haven’t gone garage sale hopping in a long time. I don’t wake up early enough on Saturdays. :-) but now I want to go!
