Mrs. Cola, Mountain View, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Product Communications and Promotions Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Managing Partner and Senior Designer Engagement Date: March 5, 2009 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: The Mountain Terrace, Woodside, CA About Me: I’m a Washington State native, enjoying life in Silicon Valley California with my fiancé, our three kitties and one leopard gecko. I like reading wedding blogs, Photoshopping wedding design mock ups, making lists, and planning, planning, planning! I’m a bit of an anomaly, on one side I’m a very girlie girl, I collect shoes, I lay out my outfits 4-6 weeks in advance, and I’d never leave the house without my hair curled and makeup on. But on the other side, I’m a total tomboy, I love to go camping and hiking, play drinking games (hey, I’m Irish!) and most of my closest friends are guys. My fiancé and I are planning a DIY-focused wedding with a balance between easygoing (what he wants) and chic and stylish (what I want), and are tying it all together with elements in lavender, sage, butter cream and chocolate.

Pre-Wedding Skin Rehab

February 26th, 2010 @ 1:10 pm by Mrs. Cola

For years now I’ve been annoyed with the skin on my face. I have combination skin with an oily T-zone and dry cheeks, and an occasional pimple or two. I’ve spent who knows how much money trying out different face washes and moisturizers, as well as different makeup to help cover the shine, but still ended up looking like this every time:

My most recent regimen of Clean & Clear Morning Burst Shine Control Scrub in the mornings, followed by Olay Total Effects Smoothing Serum, and Clean & Clear Daily Pore Cleanser at night, followed by Olay Total Effects Night Firming Cream just wasn’t doing it for me. I was trying to combat my oily skin and also prevent wrinkles, but the Clean & Clear products were just too drying and the Olay products were too moisturizing.

I decided I needed a change, since I didn’t want to have to worry about reapplying my L’Oreal True Match pressed powder 10 times on my wedding day (yes, my nose needed about 10 applications of powder a day!). So I dug up this post from Mrs. Peep Toe that I’d bookmarked ages ago, and decided to bite the bullet and invest in more expensive skin care than the drug store brands.

I went to the Origins store at a nearby mall on my lunch break, and bought them out! After a couple weeks of use, I’ve already noticed a big difference in my skin, it’s so much more even—my nose and forehead are much less oily, and my cheeks aren’t dry anymore. In fact, I noticed a difference after doing my new face regimen the first time; after using my new products the first night, I woke up the next morning and my forehead wasn’t even oily like it usually was!

So, want to see my new regimen? This is what was recommended for combination skin. Twice a week, exfoliate with Modern Friction (follow the product links for image sources).

Pre-Wedding Skin Rehab : wedding beauty Modern Twice daily wash your face with Checks and Balances. I love this cleanser; you only need about a pea sized amount to get your face squeaky clean, and it’s really nice and frothy too.

After washing your face twice a day, you tone your skin with the United State balancing tonic on a cotton ball. It really gets deep into your pores, and after a long day it’s amazing to see even more dirt come off your face after scrubbing it with the cleanser! And this toner is great for sensitive skin too, which I have.

After my skin can’t get any cleaner, I use Youthtopia age-correcting serum with Rhodiola, in my quest to prevent wrinkles. I really like the smell of the Youthtopia products—it’s sort of like cinnamon oatmeal.

Finally, I end my twice daily routine with Youthtopia skin firming lotion with Rhodiola. You could also use their other lotion that has an SPF, but my pale Irish skin needs all the wrinkle prevention it can get, so I opted for the firming lotion!

If I do have a pimple, I use a little dab of the Spot Remover. It works so much better than the Clean & Clear Advantage stuff I was using before, I can actually feel my skin tighten upon application (and the oil being sucked out of the pimple)!

Pre-Wedding Skin Rehab : wedding beauty Spotre
And of course, I’m also doing my daily cleansing and moisturizing routine on my neck. I don’t want to end up with a smoother face and wrinkly neck like this!

Another step I’ve taken to improve the look of my skin is to try a new pressed powder (I don’t wear foundation on a daily basis). For the past few weeks I’ve been using the Laura Mercier Mineral Pressed Powder with SPF 15. It costs about 3 times as much as the L’Oreal powder I was using, but works about 10 times better, so I’d say it’s worth it!

Pre-Wedding Skin Rehab : wedding beauty Lauram So to recap, I’ve changed all the cleansers and moisturizers, as well as the pressed powder I’m using on my face. And the result? After a few weeks I’ve gone from an oil slick T-zone that needed powder applied about 10 times a day to keep it under control, to a mostly dry and balanced face that I only apply powder to about 2-3 times a day (and the applications are mainly to my nose; my forehead has improved more than my nose).

The only facial skin product that I’m still using from before is the Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets. They really do work great for removing shine before you reapply your powder!

What steps will you be taking to get your face wedding day ready? Got any product tips for the hive?

I love Origins stuff. I use almost all the same things! I was talking about it on another thread. It really does help w/ combo skin!

Thanks for this post! I need to go into an origins and get recommendations. My skin gets very oily, but the wrong product easily drys it out to the point of peeling. It’s frustrating.

Can I ask you how much your total bill at Origins was?

I was just thinking about all of this! My makeup literally melts off my face by the end of the day. How much did all of this cost you? Let’s see if I can work it into my wedding budget. :) Doubtful!

I don’t have my receipt with me at work, but I think it was about $130 to set myself up with all the Origins products. The pricing is on their website too, and you can order there if you don’t have a store nearby!

Oh! And the new powder I’m using was about $30-35. But SO much better than the $10 drug store powder I was using!

@Miss Cola: That’s not too bad! I ordered a sample kit from Nude Skincare. I love their product, but it’s ridiiiculously expensive.

Further proof you get what you pay for! Congrats on finding the perfect combination. I know you can’t put a price tag on the great feeling of relief and the extra boost of self confidence you have found!

@ Lace : I think orgins is changing (or has changed) their packaging. I saw all these products and more at Nordstrom Rack for half off. I checked the expiration dates and they aren’t until next summer.

I totally use the Origins stuff as well. It is awesome. Expensive, but awesome. I use the some of the same products, and some different ones and it usually runs me about $150-$200 if I buy everything at once. You can get on their mailing list though, and they will send you coupons for free sample and free shipping which helps.

Their Night-a-mins night creme? Awesome. And the andrew weil serum also does wonders and has totally evened me out and corrected any redness. It’s awesome. I can’t say enough about that line.

Don’t go crazy with the modern friction though. I had a friend with pretty delicate skin similar to yours, and she was using it 3X a week which just dried her out. And not in a good way. I’ve found using it in the shower with the steam is a little gentler than just using it totally dry (I had a origins lady recommend that)

Hmmm, I might have to check Origins out. I’ve always heard good things, but I think I’m going to start down the road to wrinkle prevention, and this looks like a great place to start!

This is a good reminder that I need to invest in some better skin products. I used to be an Origins fanatic but had to ween myself when I went back to grad school. But this gal’s not getting any younger; good products are so worth the investment!

Laura Mercier products are amazing. I swear by their foundation powder. It may be a little expensive ($40), but it’s covers really well without oiling up your face. Most products like mascara or eyeshadows are relatively the same (whether it be high end or low end), but foundations and powders are not created equal (ingredient wise). Just my two cents =)

I love Origins and it it was I usually use. I have begun using another treatment recently…I am oily and dry as well (Irish and Italian and I definitely got both). One of my super fantastic BMs who lives in London sent me a facial kit by Eve Lom. OH MY GOS My skin has never been so even and glowing! I love it.
