The Ring That Will Not Be

February 26th, 2010 @ 3:54 pm by Mrs. Ribbons

We know I have a pretty unhealthy obsession with Dior. Well, last week, the impossible happened: I mustered up the courage to enter the Dior store in Chevy Chase.

Either I don’t know how to operate doors or theirs were locked, because I had to rattle the door for a second before being let in. I thought, while I rattled, they weren’t going to let people like me in. Yet lo, they did.

I entered mecca. A choir of flouncy-skirted angels with teensy waists sung in my head, “j’adore!” But I quickly told the saleswoman I was there for the fine jewelry. I was on a mission.

Oh my dears, yes, yes, I was. You see, I’ve been lusting after a particular Dior ring for my wedding band.

Oui! It’s white gold and magical. And rad.

It also retails for $675.

This particular store only had the all-diamond version, so I tortured myself and tried it on. I loved it, desperately.

Though its sparkly-ness was fantastic, I knew I preferred the simplicity of the white gold version. I was told I could call anytime and the ring in my size would be overnighted. It was that easy. I could have a piece of Dior tomorrow.

Well, no it isn’t. You see, I’m insured through Ribs’ work as a domestic partner, because the health insurance premiums at my job are extremely expensive. We weren’t aware, however, that domestic partner benefits are considered taxable income (and another reason DOMA needs to be repealed). Therefore Ribs’ tax bill this year is high. Like the price of my precious oui ring-high.

We have a lot to be thankful for — we’re not in debt because of the wedding and we’ll get by, even with an unexpected and enormous bill. But something has to give somewhere and unfortunately, that would be my ring.

I’m pretty bummed. I have been thinking about this ring for months, but it’s still just a ring.

Have any unforeseen circumstances thrown off some of the things you wanted for your wedding? Did you try to make it work anyway?

I also settled on my ring. I think my fiance would have been fine with me getting the more expensive one, but it was way out of budget (and his ring cost a whopping $40).

the big stinking wrench right now is that the mr. lost his job….we were just about to book our honeymoon and have to put it off until we figure out the $$ situation

Maybe it can be a 1 year or 5 year present? That is a really cool piece of jewelry; I totally get your disappointment!

If only Dior did installment plans… There is some time yet for it to work out, no?

(I lust after the mimi oui, so I feel your pain.)

Wow, that would definitely be a distinctive wedding band. That sucks you had to give it up, but as Potato Chips said, you can have it to look forward to as an anniversary present.

Mmmkay. I am not a fan of debt at all… I am not into spending a lot on weddings… I am not a person who lives beyond my means.

But I think you should get it.

It’s adorable, you love it, it’s your wedding ring, and it’s not *THAT* expensive in the grand scheme of rings and general wedding purchases.

If you want to continue being uber-responsible, maybe just find another place to cut from?! Alternately, credit card. But just this once!

What a sweet band. I’m with PChipz, get it as an anniversary gift… it’ll be like saying “oui” all over again!

Aww, I’m sad you’re not getting it! I love that ring! I’m thinking about getting it as a right hand ring, but, we’ll see!

Say, are you attached to it being that EXACT Ring? I wonder if you could get someone through Etsy Alchemy to make you something similar, in sterling? Maybe it wouldnt be quite as DIOR fabulous… but the price might be a lot easier to swallow.

That’s really cute :) But, yeah, big price.

Were you planning to wear that on your right hand then since, obviously, it won’t fit up with the e-ring?

OMGLOVEIT! i’m getting married in france and this would be absolutely perfect! can i ask how big it was? i mean, like on your hand… was it like a wedding band… or more like a showpiece right-hand ring type of thing? hmmm… as much as i think it would be perfect as a wedding ring, i worry that it would be too big…and not stack with my e-ring. maybe i’ll wonder over to dior here in NYC to check it out!

@Brianalaura: That’s part of my guilt - the ring my fiance wants is pretty inexpensive!
@bluebutterfly: I’m sorry to hear that! That’s a tough situation.
@Ms Potato Chips: I’ll pass that idea on :)
@teaadntoast: If I work some budget magic, I could theoretically order it a week before the wedding. Which isn’t a bad idea.
@Tara: Ha, enabler!
@Curlysue: I was going to put my e-ring on my right hand and leave it there. I liked the idea of bling on both hands!

I super love this ring!!! It is so adorable, and it is going to take everything in my power to keep from running out and buying this! :)
I also vote that it would be an amazing anniv ring! I hear ya on the whole insurance/domestic partner-tax thing. I put my fi on my insurance this past year, but luckily his work picks up the cost + tax hit so we’re no less off. Just think of the tax break you’ll get next year! :)

So cute. But C’est La Vie. You will find the ring of your dreams. And you can always upgrade later.

@Miss Ribbons: I’ve actually thought about doing that too, but my FI really wants my e-ring on my left hand since it was a custom thing he poured his heart into and has some diamonds from his grandma’s ring on it. I’d wear the band on the other hand but I just don’t know, people won’t know what it means. But then again, who cares, I will know and so will he! hmmmmmmm…………..

Sad day for the lovely ring. I still have faith that it’ll land on yo’ finger somehow– wedding ring or not.

I have a feeling that you will feel a twinge of regret for a long time if you don’t get that ring because it’s UH-MAY-ZING! I don’t have any suggestions as to how, per se, but I do know that when I want something badly enough, I always find a way! You’re gonna be wearing that baby for the rest of your life! Take into account what it will cost if you calculate per day of wear into it….pennies. See? Now it’s affordable :)
