About Mrs. Argyle

Groom’s cakes are a bit of a Southern tradition, so Midwesterners are not too familiar with the idea – although, they are popping up more in town.

Here’s a little background (thanks to the Wedding Channel):

The Groom’s cake is an American South tradition, intended to be a gift from the bride to the groom. It can often take the shape of just about anything, or come in the form of a cheesecake, chocolate cake or pie (amongst other things).

More recently, the idea of fun cakes that reflect a hobby or profession of the Groom have gained popularity, thanks in part to shows like Ace of Cakes.

(I had to give a nod to the Mr. Argyle’s occupation, of course).

I love the idea of featuring something different for the groom’s cake if you are doing one. Something other than cake. It gives guests an alternative to cake, because let’s face it: not everyone likes cake (although I’m not sure how that is possible).

I heart croquembouches. A lot. Probably because I like puff pastries. A lot.

BUT, how can you not love this twist on the croquembouche?

Um, heck yes. A donut croquembouche alternative. They had a cake and the donut tree-cake. How awesome?!

We keep tossing the idea around of having a groom’s cake, but that’s a lot of cake at one wedding! Are you going to have a groom’s cake? Does your groom want something different, or a fun-shaped cake?

We’re actually going to do FI’s groom’s cake at the rehearsal dinner. After talking to FMIL, we thought it’d be a great way to have dessert at the rehearsal and also allow it to have it’s own moment to shine. Fi’s groom’s cake is going to be shaped like a Gator.

We actually did a small two-tiered traditional cake and then we HAD to have a croquembouche! We only had 60 guests and there was very little cake left and all the croquembouche GONE! I was soooo glad we did it. people loved it. I have a pic of the two in the gallery.

I had never heard of a groom’s cake until WB–it’s definitely not something people do in the PacNW!

I think it’s a cool idea but not something we’ll do because I don’t think anyone would get it. I do bake a lot for my fiance though, so maybe I’ll bake something like that to have around the house while we have a bunch of OOT visitors the week of the wedding.

Maybe if your wedding cake is smaller? Then people can choose between wedding cake and groom’s cake. I’ve been to weddings where the cake was, well, cake, but the groom’s cake was pie (or as you’re showing, croquembouche or donuts). Then people can just choose what they want to eat. I was however at a wedding last summer where their wedding cake was HUUUUUGE and their groom’s cake was pretty big too. SO MUCH LEFTOVER CAKE. They saved some but also threw some away when no one took it at the end of the night. So sad!

I think I am going to do a groom’s cake at the rehearsal dinner… Maybe that’s an option?

I never realized that a groom’s cake was a southern thing! I guess that’s because I’m from the south. :)

I wanted him to have a red velvet armadillo cake a la Steel Magnolias, and he almost gave in, but not totally. We’re having a robot instead because he’s a roboticist. More fitting.

I never knew it was a southern tradition. I’m from the midwest and every wedding I’ve ever been to has a groom’s cake. We’re having one at our wedding and it will most likely be in the form of a tractor or other farm machinery since that’s what FI loves to do.

The airplane would be so cool since he’s a pilot…maybe a smaller one though! That donut cake looks yummy and how beautiful is their actual cake! My fiance LOVES LOVES LOVES The Pittsburgh Steelers…was crushed when they didnt make it to the playoffs this yr…almost boys…almost! So for a surprise grooms cake…shhh…I sent our venue a picture of a terrible towel that has the 6 super bowl wins on it!! They are going to make it from a sheet cake to feed about 25 ppl for $125.00!! I cant wait to see it and cant wait until he sees it!! YAY!! SHHH!!

Does your fiance really love cheesecake or something else like oreos? That would be cool…a cake made out of oreos or a giant oreo!!

My fiance is one of those people who doesn’t like cake… or much of anything that’s sweet. He’s a savory guy. Given I have a huge sweet tooth… mrf. Kind of sucks. However, I’ve come up with an idea. He loves the gingerbread that I make (which is more like a cake and less like those brick-hard things used to make gingerbread houses). So I may try to put together a gingerbread something or other… probably cutting up lots of squares and arranging them on a tower or something along those lines. But I know it’s the only cake-like thing he’s ever gushed over, so I want to use it somehow. I made it for our New Year’s party and all our friends and Dave’s family loved it. I got the recipe from my mom and grandmother, so I know my family likes it. And that covers the whole guest list. :D

A good friend of mine had a small wedding cake and a doughnut buffet - not as a grooms cake, but just because the bride adored them :) It worked out well, because a lot of people had cake right after dinner, then munched on the doughnuts throughout the night (kind of like a late night snack). But I’ve always liked the grooms cake as a rehearsal dinner dessert, too, because it gives both cakes time to shine.

Either way, more dessert is always a good thing!

we are debating whether to do the groom’s cake at the RD instead of the actual reception- but definitely having one - its tradition!

OMG!!! Our wedding cake is from Patty Cakes (the source of the airplane groom’s cake). Patty is phenominal…I strongly suggest her for anyone getting married in the St. Louis area. She’s sooo affordable too! <3

no groom’s cake for us, but if i went to a wedding with both a main cake and groom’s cake, i would definitely try both. but i am a cake person, so i do like your idea of doing something different like croquembouche of the donut tower for the groom’s cake.

P.S.
I let my FI have complete and total control of the grooms cake. I’m excited, I have no clue what he and Patty are cooking up! We’re planning to serve it as dessert for our rehersal dinner.

@Miss Scissors: You just made me laugh for about two minutes straight. That is an awesome movie! hehe.
I went to a rehearsal dinner last night that had an amazing chocolate grooms cake with a University of South Carolina (Go Cocks!) on the top and choco-covered strawberries. MMMMMM. Cant wait to see what the wedding cake looks like!

We’re not having a groom’s cake because we’re having a dessert bar instead. There will be creme brulee, smore’s, cake balls, and cookies in addition to some sort of wedding cake. I sooo can’t wait to eat at my wedding :)
