Cakeee! Nom Nom Nom…

February 15th, 2010 @ 1:12 pm by Mrs. Buttons

We had our first cake tasting…nom nom nom!

Mr. Buttons absolutely loves Publix cake (for those of you who don’t have a Publix, it is a grocery store chain). And, with good reason, because it is delicious! We definitely want to consider it as an option. Thankfully, Publix offers complimentary cake tastings, so we were all over it!

When I called the bakery to place the order, however, the woman who I spoke with was clearly not used to the ordering process… or was in a hurry and didn’t feel like taking five minutes to talk to me. When I said I wanted to try some cake and filling flavors, she quickly asked me, “OK, so which ones?”

“So, could you tell me how exactly you set up the tasting samples please?”

“You just tell me what cake flavors and fillings you want to try.”

“Do I need to tell you combinations or anything?”

“Nope.”

Hmm, seems simple enough.

Get Ready for Some Busy Days Ahead!

February 15th, 2010 @ 12:35 pm by Mrs. Paisley

Hello there! It’s so nice to see you! I’m Miss Paisley, and I’ve actually been a bee since I was a very young gipper. First, I was a “busy bee” at Busy Days Preschool, where I adored the mascot bee with all the unbridled enthusiasm of a five-year-old.

Then, my first job out of college was as a daily news reporter at the Record-Bee newspaper! Of course, the bee was also the mascot there. On a recent visit back to my hometown paper, my dear friend and editor of the Bee gifted me this lovely hat:

Get Ready for Some Busy Days Ahead! : wedding relationships 1 1

Please excuse the harsh lighting. It’s a self-portrait taken late at night, after seeing Dear John at the movies.

Which I think is so appropriate considering I’m once again… a bee!

I can’t wait to get started telling you all about our chic, family-lake-house wedding we’re planning. Get ready for a healthy serving of DIY projects, a little letterpress printing, and a side of bumps, surprises and relationship lessons.

But first, let me tell you more about Mr. Paisley and me.

I am a rabid knitter, except recently, wedding projects have replaced my yarn and needles. I’ve been fiercely independent since the age of 2 and 30 years later I think my family and friends had given up on me settling down and getting married. Ironically, I had to go all the way to Seattle to find a boy from Purdue. We fell in love over Seattle Beers and cooking together. I love NASCAR, he loves Legos. I can talk like a Muppet and he can fit a whole McDonald’s cheeseburger in his mouth. We are a two reception couple, currently planning a brewery inspired bash.

Miss Gingham's Picture
Miss Gingham, Portland, OR Age and Occupation: 27, Creative Producer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Merchant Engagement Date: September 10, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: The Barn at Neocoxie Creek About Me: I grew up in Washington State and moved to Portland, OR after college (Go Cougs). I work for a rather large sport and fitness company as a Creative Producer where I spend my days bringing stories, athletes and products to life in the digital arena. It was at this company (and actually in the same department), that I met my fiance. We’ve been happily together as a couple for almost 2 years and friends for almost 3. We have a 2 year old Yellow Lab/German Sheppard Mix (he’s gigantic), and live together in our 1940s house that we bought together a little over a year ago. When not at work, you can find me in the gym or on the trails, reading a good book, enjoying Oregon Microbrews, learning how to remodel an old house, trying to acquire a green thumb, figuring out how to cook, watching football and basketball, or doing anything “outdoorsy” – camping, hiking, boating. By the way, I absolutely love country music, cowboy boots, bon fires, small towns, and in general, anything "country", which is why we're planning a down-home, casual, country-themed wedding in an 100 year old barn in the small coastal town where my fiance grew up.

The Date Debate

February 15th, 2010 @ 11:12 am by Miss Gingham

Mr. Gingham and I had some criteria we used when picking the date:

  • Had to be a time when it would not be raining so that we could get married outside
  • Wouldn’t conflict with Hood To Coast or Hood To Coast training.
  • Could not be on a OSU Beaver Football Saturday (home or away)

Good Weather: In Oregon, and generally anywhere in the PNW, you really can’t count on solid sunshine until after the 4th of July. And then, anytime after the 1st weekend in October you’d be pushing it. So we narrowed it down to August and September.

Hood To Coast: This is a gigantic relay every August in Oregon where teams of 12 race from Mt. Hood to Seaside. It’s crazy. And while you’re running it, you ask yourself over and over why you’re doing it, but in the end it’s all worth it. I’ve run HTC twice, Mr. Gingham has done it 6 or 7 times, and we’re both doing it again this year. HTC definitely requires training, pretty much all summer long (the race is August 28th) and we decided that we didn’t want our wedding and honeymoon to conflict with this (hmm - lounge by the pool all day or run hills for 6 miles?). So that just eliminated the entire month of August.

I love to dance regardless of who is watching, and enjoy a good laugh with my girls. I have a soft spot in my heart for planet Earth, my two dogs and my fiance. Fall is my favorite season (which is why we are marrying in September), but I love a warm summer day and the Colorado mountains in the winter. We are planning a modern soiree downtown, with lots of bold colors, and fun, eco-friendly elements.

Argyle Engage-aversary

February 15th, 2010 @ 10:41 am by Mrs. Argyle

One year ago today, Mr. A proposed to me.

Which reminds me – I’ve never actually told you how he proposed, so here it goes! And, of course, photos are included!!

Last January, we had planned a trip to Colorado for some skiing and to visit some friends of ours. We were both pining for a visit to the Rockies, but Mr. A had a hidden agenda for this trip – a proposal! His initial plan was to propose on the first night while we were out snow tubing. Our flight arrived a bit late, so after driving from DEN to Keystone, a delicious Mexican dinner and countless hours of catching up, we never made it out to go snow tubing.

The Mr. had to come up with “Plan B” – to propose on Saturday while we were on the slopes. Unfortunately, I took a pretty big spill mid-day and was not feeling up to par (side note: Always wear a helmet on the slopes – it’s what saved me from getting a concussion).

To an improvised Plan C he went.

Mrs. Hot Wings, Chicago/San Diego Age and Occupation: 28, Professor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Instructor Engagement Date: December 20, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Ocean View Villas/Jasmine Seafood Restaurant About Me: I am a psychology grad student living in Chicago and planning my wedding to a fellow psych grad student. I am a Sunny So-Cal bred gal who trudged across the country to follow her love of psychology and ended up finding a partner in the process. I am overly passionate about anything I involve myself with. I am an activist, a foodie, a reality TV watching junkie, an over-analyzer, a photography obsesser, and am utterly cheesy to the core. This is a story of what happens when a boy and a girl meet, fall in love over academic dorkiness, and a shared love for life. We (mostly I) are planning our semi-destination wedding in my hometown of San Diego. We are excited to bring our families and friends together from across our lifespans to celebrate our future in a grand 400+ person culturally blended affair!

Traditionalist or Rebel?

February 15th, 2010 @ 10:16 am by Mrs. Hot Wings

Weddings can be quite the beast. All of a sudden, parents who haphazardly follow tradition can quickly become the guardians of all things traditional. This is certainly how it has been going down in the Hot Wings’ familia. I always knew Mama Hot Wings would want me to stick to many of her traditional Vietnamese ways: tea ceremonies, Vietnamese ao dai, a gigantic guest list, Asian food, etc. But some of the little details she decided to argue with me about came as a complete surprise.

Our biggest fight to date, you ask? Shark Fin Soup! Who would’ve thunk it, right?

I speak Italian and love pasta. My real passion is the outdoors, though. When I'm not at work, I'm snowboarding, hiking with my two dogs, mountain biking, surfing, cross-country-skiing, or boating New Mexico's rivers. New Zealand Honeymoon: Part II

So, just to catch you up, we’d flown in (albeit, after a lot of stress), wandered Christchurch, taken an incredibly scenic drive to Kaikoura, and gone wine- and beer-tasting in Marlborough. And, remember, we now had George, an adorable little stuffed bear, along for the ride.

I enjoy the color pink, I'm obsessed with the Dior New Look and tulle, and I heart my level 80 paladin. I'm a sucker for bad TV, literary theory, and cakes of all persuasion. I also happen to be marrying the cutest closet nerd around! It's all about Bloomington for us because it's where we met -- on the college paper. If there's a theme for our small summertime wedding, it's Dior meets Dorothy Draper on a lark in Bloomington; think poofy, plus graphic prints, bold colors, and a whole lot of prettiness.

Linens Can Be Boring

February 15th, 2010 @ 9:13 am by Mrs. Ribbons

For about a month my mom has been hounding me on a near-daily basis about linens. What colors, what fabric, how can we make that room pop more, how can we make it less ugly, blah blah, linens this, linens that. I told her over and over, let’s just do white because we have pink crap everywhere (okay, beautiful pink flowers, geez) and I don’t want it to look like a giant threw up all of his Pepto.

Naturally, I changed my mind after seeing these.

Cakie! - A Beginning

February 15th, 2010 @ 8:40 am by Mrs. Sewing

So I needed to line up some cake tastings.

What does one bring to a cake tasting?

The smart thing would be to say, “a budget”. But there’s also flavor, design, and size to think about, too.

All the unknown variables ran through my head as Mr. Sewing picked up the chorus of the Birthday Cake song. (And I apologize in advance for anyone that actually listens to that silliness.)

Anyway, as in any complex problem, we started by listing out the “givens”. What did I already know?

  • We wanted a square cake.

When it comes to clear skin, I am obsessive. I dread the thought of waking up on my wedding day with an enormous zit on my forehead (My Big Fat Greek Wedding, anyone????)! Oh, the horror!!! So… how do I combat this?

I know that there are many little tricks out there to get rid of zits quickly (toothpaste? Windex?), but years ago I became absolutely hooked on a product by Mario Badescu.
