This is the exact question my mom asked when I told her the wedding would be “country” themed. See, while Mr. Gingham and I like country music, no one else in our families really embraces it like we do (except maybe my brother - he’s always down for a little Tim McGraw). Most of our friends love it so that’s good because otherwise it would be Mr. G and I dancing by ourselves to our country band while our guests stare at us with confused looks on their faces. That would be weird. Anyway, I had to explain to my mom that while our wedding (more specifically the reception) would be “country” it would not be a “hoe-down.”
“But it’s in a barn,” was her response. Yes, good point. Our reception would be in a barn (just to clarify - as long as it doesn’t rain, we will be getting married outside right next to the barn with the food, band and dancing being inside the barn). “Maybe the guests could bring jeans that they could change into for dancing later?” she continued. “Um, no Mom, there will be no jeans, and no flannel shirts at our wedding.” This convo went on longer and eventually lead to a bit of a fight. She was just trying to understand what was going on in my head and I was frustrated because I felt like she was making fun of my ideas. Now, eventually everything got resolved and my mom in on board with the wedding plans…
Our little discussion did make me realize I should share some of the visions/inspirations I was having in my head for the post ceremony dancing. So to help you get a better idea of what I’m going for (in the way of overall atmosphere), I thought I’d share some video clips.

My mom has always signed off her emails to me with ’YDM’ (Your Darling Mom), so when she started signing emails ’MOB’, I was confused and a little scared. Had she joined the mafia?! Then I realized that she only used that for wedding related emails… and duh, it meant Mother of the Bride.
Still, I couldn’t help but laugh when she first sent me an email titled “MOB Dresses”. Would that be dresses that are particularly good for drug/arms trafficking or protection rackets?
OK, back to the actual task at hand. Mom Guinea Pig has been stressing for quite some time about finding a dress to wear to the wedding (sounds familiar!), but last week she grabbed her friend DB and they set out on a mission to find the perfect outfit. I think they must have gone to 200 stores, judging from all the photos and comments I got in my inbox! I’ll narrow it down for ya and show you top contenders.
Mom GP had only two things she was dead set on going into this: it needed to be knee length, and it had to have a jacket.
(Sexy Momma Guinea Pig!)
Mom GP felt this one was a little too ’young’ for her, and although I think she looks great in it, I can see where she’s coming from. Maybe it would be perfect if she were going to a mafia party (OK, I’ll stop with the mob now)!

Kelly (aka KellyV) and Matt met at work in March of 2006 in McLean, VA. They both were living in a new place where they knew very few people and their friendship quickly developed into a relationship. They eventually moved to New York City, and Matt planned a surprise engagement to Kelly with an elaborate plan involving several of their mutual friends. He proposed to her on the steps of his old townhouse in Virginia… the same place where they first kissed!

I would give my left arm (really, left and right arms) to own these shoes in red (Thank you to the wonderful photographer, Clary Pfeiffer for the photo):

I was on the hunt for the perfect red shoe to wear with my gown. I found a few contenders, but I wasn’t loving them:

Remember how I mentioned that we have 2 venues? Well, I’ve already told you about our civil ceremony site, Ocean View Villas. Now I’m going to tell you about our reception venue. We’ll be receptioning it up at Jasmine Seafood Restaurant.

My mom insisted on having her super large guest list and traditional Chinese cuisine where you get 10 courses served family style. At some point I said OK and moved on to finding a venue. The problem is, you can’t have a large wedding reception without paying an arm and a leg.

Time can do funny things—it can make you forget and distorts your memory, for better or for worse.
I’ve told you a little about my dress. Here’s a reminder, with someone else wearing it (and yes, she’s got much bigger boobs than I do, which some of you commented on the first time I posted this—thanks).
Recently, I had my first fitting. It was the first time I had seen my dress in over a year.

Over the weekend, I had my first wedding dream. It was actually really pleasant — the ceremony was in some sort of lush outdoor amphitheater, large pink lanterns were hanging everywhere by gleaming gold chains (real gold! In this economy!). The flowers were blooming and I was even a two-dress bride! I woke up thinking that went surprisingly well, since of course I’ve been silently dreading the wedding mishaps that are surely awaiting me. And then I remembered: I don’t have two dresses. That was not at all real. Blast.

Entering into a conversation about florists and flowers with my Sewing-Mom, she wisely asked what my vision was, knowing full well I don’t know two things about flowers. That’s why I called her. After all, she used to work at a nursery.
On the topic of centerpieces -
Me: “Something short and sprawly and lush! Lots of green, with red flowers interspersed!”
Sewing-Mom: “Are we after that tropical feel?”
Me: “Yes, but not beach tropical. More like, rain forest tropical. Prehistoric. FERNS! Oh, let’s have some ferns!”
Sewing-Mom: “What kind of ferns? There’s many kinds. What kind do they have in Hawaii?”
Me: “Oh, I don’t know, we’ll just go to Home Depot once we’re there and find out. And then afterwards we cans eat them!”
Consider the conversation effectively over.

The Southern Bride- The epitome of southern charm and femininity, she’s a daddy’s girl through and through. Her colors are a more modern take on the famous “blush and bashful”- pinks and purples have always been her thing. She’s getting married at an antebellum mansion turned b&b, and her father giving her away is non-negotiable. She’s carrying a lush bouquet of purple and pink wild flowers that are wrapped in lace to match her dress, and accented with a vintage locket that belonged to her grandma. She’ll be treating her guests to a fun yet elegant Southern BBQ, and finishing their meal with a 5 tiered fondant confection.
I wanted to show you how I do my smoky eyes because it is not hard at all and hey, we all love a tutorial! I don’t go over-the-top smoky, but just enough to give my eyes depth and definition…

My smoky eyes at their best
Now I know the following may be a lot more eye makeup than some of you typically use, so feel free to adjust accordingly to your liking. And use the colors that work best with your coloring. Also, as far as makeup goes, I know people love MAC, Smashbox, etc., but I’m all about makeup on a budget so all products I use are available at Walgreens or your local drugstore aside from one.
Congratulations to the winner of this contest, skibobrown!

Yesterday night, Mr. Hammy and I were on the subject of men and baked goods. See, he hosts an occasional poker game for a small group of our b-school friends. I wanted to bake something for the upcoming game, but somehow the image of a group of men playing poker, beers on the table, cupcakes in hand, seemed a little… odd. To confirm I wasn’t off my rocker, I asked him what the deal was with men and cupcakes. Or lots of other baked goods, for that matter. I mean, the Mister will dig into a huge slice of chocolate cake, but nibbling on a dainty hazelnut macaron? Not so much. His answer was as expected:
“Cupcakes? Well. They’re kinda girly.”
What?? Okay. Maybe the pink buttercream frosting I get on the vanilla/vanilla cupcakes from my favorite bakery isn’t exactly the manliest of things, but we’re talking cupcakes here. You’ve only got so much to work with.
Not so, apparently - enter the man’s cupcake.
