So, my ring was in search of a place to rest its heavy, spiky head at the end of the day. I kept my I-must-purchase-something instinct in check, and instead of buying a ring bowl or other holder, I decided to make do with my bare hands (good job, me!).
As a little background, while I’ve been DIYing the stationery for our wedding, I can’t craft anything that is 3D. I can print stuff, but not craft. There’s a distinction, okay?
But now, hive, I will flex my DIY muscle and show you truly how crafty I am. Prepare yourself.
*Disclaimer–before you get too excited, please also prepare yourself for the heavy dose of good-natured sarcasm ahead.
Steps for DIY ring holder:
1. Look around your home for something round. Spot old-school Korean teacup (teamug?) on shelf. Remove from shelf.
Ok… so you’ve already heard about our suit shopping debacles… I bet you’d like to see how it turned out!
When Mr. Buttons and I were in Florida for Thanksgiving, we inevitably wanted to check for any amazing Black Friday sales. Normally, I do not get up at the crack of dawn to shop, but if there is something particularly good on sale I can be convinced to do so. When the Black Friday ads came out, Mr. Buttons noticed the Kohl’s insert, which I had passed over (foolishly). Annnnd guess what? They were having a sale on their suits until noon! My ears immediately perked up.
So… Mr. Buttons and I arrived at Kohl’s at 8AM the day after Thanksgiving to scout out the suiting! I must say, I was VERY pleasantly surprised. The suit separates that were on sale were by Apt. 9, and they had a very nice textured charcoal suit that fit Mr. Buttons very well!
Don’t judge me, lurking in the mirror… I didn’t shower…

Stacy over at QueerlyWed emailed earlier to alert us of a great Valentine’s Day contest they have going on right now on their site! They’re giving away a slew of prizes, including Coco-Zen chocolates and this gorgeous Sondra Roberts clutch—perfect for your V-Day date night!

First up on the scouting tour was the hair and makeup trial, with Maleana Cosmetic’s owner, Dorys Foltin. Mr. Sew dropped Sewing-Mom and I off at the shop, and then went to find a pair of pants that didn’t have ripped spots at the knees (Mr. Sew loves riding his Razor scooter to the train station each day, but he’s taken more than a few spills on it). I walked in, giddy upon seeing two bouncing heads of pretty curls leaving from the earlier appointment.
After meeting Dorys, she got right down to business - what was my wedding going to be like? What did my dress look like? What were my colors? Did I have any ideas?
“This one, please?”
I showed her some of the pictures I liked, and she picked out the trends right away.

Music is not my forte. I love to listen and dance to it, but I’ve never been one to remember band names, composers, etc. Thankfully, I was able to outsource all of the music decisions for the wedding. You already know that the music at the reception was rocking, and when it came to the ceremony music, I punted the issue to my planner. Ms. P found a local violinist, Lauri, for us to use as the backbone of our ceremony music. We worked with Lauri and chose traditional pieces for the majority of the ceremony, which I’ll blog about more in a future post about our programs.
Lamma-bamma’s cousin, J, also plays the violin and we requested that he play a special piece for us. He suggested Meditation from Massenet’s Thais.

GlambrideNYC is selling a gorgeous birdcage veil. The veil is adorned with a silk organza flower, rhinestones, pearls and feathers. She’s asking $100 plus shipping.

I’m one-third of the way through my last semester of law school, and all I can think about is taking a vacation. It seems to me to be as good a time as any to tell you about our honeymoon!
We had a few considerations in choosing a destination. First, I only had a week to travel after the wedding, so we wanted to stay somewhere close to home/quick to get to—we didn’t want to spend our whole honeymoon just getting there and back. That cut most of the places we actually wanted to go out of the running (I was just dying to take a Mediterranean cruise!). Second, we didn’t want to spend tons of money, so that cut out anywhere we’d have had to fly to reach. Thus, the honeymoon road trip (to wine country!) was born.

We’ll be skipping the morning-after brunch to make the long slog up to Sonoma, where neither of us have ever been, and will spend a few days there before heading west and south back home via Santa Cruz (one of my favorite places) and Carmel.

Our second set of engagement pictures comes from our wedding photographer, Hanssie Trainor. I found Hanssie through my friend Moe who took our first engagement pictures, and then stalked her for months! My hair and makeup was taken care of by Kacee Geoffroy. I told Kacee the theme I was going for and she ran with it. I think she totally captured the vision. Even Mr. Hot Wings got jealous that he didn’t get some makeup!
Location: Little Italy in San Diego, CA
Props: encyclopedias and our glasses
Theme: Hip Professors! What else would it be?

My potential rehearsal dinner outfits!
I didn’t think through my engagement photo outfits very thoroughly (and though I liked the way they turned out, I wish I had worn something more “me”) but you won’t find me doing that for our rehearsal and rehearsal dinner! Considering our laid back vibe for the dinner at a local restaurant that brews its own beer, and the potential for heat/humidity/rain/who even knows what, I want to choose something that will work no matter the weather!
I jumped over to Polyvore and scouted some promising options. I’m considering two different looks. The first is pretty traditional: a cream/white dress with some bright jewelry and shoes. I can always pair one of these with a bright pair of leggings and pashmina to stay warm. Here’s what I found:

L to R: Miss Real dress, ModCloth dress, bandeau dress, Anthropologie necklace, green heart necklace, Jade earrings, ruffle front dress, Calvin Klein dress, dress, green bow shoes, bracelet, Tony Burch flats
This past weekend, I played around with the Hershey’s Kisses stickers some more. The sheets of labels are small, only 4×6 sheets, and they recommend using the envelope feeder on your printer. Mine doesn’t have a feeder, just a lever I can move over. So I put in my first sheet of labels, crossed my fingers and hit print. All of them were just slightly off, enough to where the black circles that was supposed to run along the outside edge was getting cut off. So I went back to my template, scootched them all over a little, and put in another sheet of labels. And the same thing happened… it was like I never went back and tweaked them at all! So instead of wasting ANOTHER sheet of labels, I peeled off the circles I had printed on and ran it through without the stickers after repositioning AGAIN. And this is what I got…

When I last left off, I had just experienced my first wedding let-down. The venue with which I fell in love, for which I was ready to hand over a check, was just stolen out from under my feet! I went home upset, cried a little, and wished that Mr. Doxie was there to comfort me (this was all before he moved to the States). I quickly decided that being sad wasn’t going to help me find another venue and I continued my search.
I quickly found a few contenders that were just as lovely, but they all had so many rules! No outside food or drink; reception must be finished by 10PM; no alcohol other than wine; no candles; etc. etc. I know that those rules are pretty standard, but jeez! It’s our wedding, and we wanted to have a little more control!
We did find one venue that looked great on paper, but when we got there it looked like a backyard. I’ve seen some pretty awesome backyard weddings, but if we’re going to pay a few thousand dollars for a venue I’d like a little more than a lawn and a patio covered with Astroturf.
A few weeks into our search, and still a little dejected, I received a phone call from my aunt who was directing me to the website of a venue located in an adjacent town.
Excited, my aunt asked what I thought.
“Hooold on, it’s still loading.” We live out in the country, you see. Our internet is sloow. “Ohh, this looks promising!”
I was surprised to find images of a gorgeous home:

One random-sample pat down, turbulent flight and missing toiletry bag later, I arrived in Hawaii for our scouting trip.
As we did not have any wedding-related work planned until the start of business hours Monday, we did like any respectable tourists, and headed to the beach. Ala Moana beach park, to be exact, as it was close enough to my parents’ hotel and a tad bit cleaner than Waikiki’s pools of sunscreen.
After a bit of snorkeling, Mr. Sewing and I sat on the beach mats to get some sun. For fun, I muddled around taking ring shots on my toe.
As you can probably guess, my ring was quite sandy after this, and I didn’t want to put it on. I gave it to Mr. Sew to hold while it dried enough to flake the sand off. He put it in his lap. Then, while my brother and I took pictures of Sewing-Sis in the water, Mr. Sew stood up.
It took me about three minutes after that to remember that my ring was not in its normal spot on my finger.
