Mrs. Hot Wings, Chicago/San DiegoAge and Occupation: 28, ProfessorFiance's Age and Occupation: 32, InstructorEngagement Date: December 20, 2008Wedding Date: August 2010Venue: Ocean View Villas/Jasmine Seafood RestaurantAbout Me: I am a psychology grad student living in Chicago and planning my wedding to a fellow psych grad student. I am a Sunny So-Cal bred gal who trudged across the country to follow her love of psychology and ended up finding a partner in the process. I am overly passionate about anything I involve myself with. I am an activist, a foodie, a reality TV watching junkie, an over-analyzer, a photography obsesser, and am utterly cheesy to the core. This is a story of what happens when a boy and a girl meet, fall in love over academic dorkiness, and a shared love for life. We (mostly I) are planning our semi-destination wedding in my hometown of San Diego. We are excited to bring our families and friends together from across our lifespans to celebrate our future in a grand 400+ person culturally blended affair!
Who doesn’t want a big ol’ bloomer on their head? I know I do. So many people on Etsy have beautiful work for sale. Any quick Google search will locate these very talented people. Me, on the other hand, I feel like I can try and make things myself. Now, this doesn’t mean that I can actually make anything that comes close to the work of these very talented people I’m talking about, but today I will walk you though my first attempt at making myself a flower hairpiece.
Materials:
1 faux flower of your choosing
1 hair clip also of your choosing
1 needle
seed beads
thread to match flower and beads
glue
Instructions:
(1) Take your faux flower apart. If the flower is very large, you might find that their are plastic discs in between each layer of petals. Read more…

Then I followed my beau out here to LA and we're getting settled in. I've been making things since I can remember. I was raised by crafters. I love to sew, draw, paint, build, cook, bake (anything with a tangible end result is fair game). In that same spirit, I've been hosting since I was old enough to cook and set a fancy table. I kind of take after my grandmother, who believes that your morning OJ always tastes better out of the good crystal.
So, what to do with heirloom lace that is 50+ years old? If your mother is an avid quilter, you wash it with the same stuff that quilters use to wash antique quilts. A little goes a long way—I only used the soap left on the protective seal after opening this product and there were plenty of suds. The spoonful that comes with it is enough to do a whole quilt, so don’t use a lot or you will be rinsing forever.
Don’t worry, we didn’t just dunk all of the lace in and keep our fingers crossed, we tested a small piece of it first to make sure it didn’t disintegrate. Then we dunked it all in a big soapy pot. We then proceeded to rinse it about 12 times. That much lace got really heavy and with all that ’careful kneading’ to make sure we didn’t rip it, our arms got tired. Read more…
Mrs. Mouse, AustinAge and Occupation: 25, Weddingbee Editor/AttorneyFiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Civil EngineerEngagement Date: December 19, 2007Wedding Date: September 2009Venue: Barr MansionAbout Me: I just graduated from law school and will be taking the bar, getting married, going on a honeymoon with my guy, and then trying to figure out what I'm going to do with the rest of my life. I was born and raised in a small East Texas town, but I'm no country girl! I'm obsessed with British accents, fantasy (including Harry Potter, of course), and classic rock. My fiance and I consider ourselves both music and beer snobs--but every once in awhile we love to hear a crappy band and drink a cheap brew or two. We're planning an eco-friendly, casual, English garden affair for the end of summer, and we can't wait for it to get here!
When we reentered the barn after taking a few post-wedding pics, the room had been transformed from our ceremony space into a magical English garden wonderland.
Mrs. Pencils, Washington DC/Frederick, MDAge and Occupation: 24, Program Director, Education Non ProfitFiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Administrative Assistant, Ocean Conservation Non ProfitEngagement Date: July 26, 2008Wedding Date: May 2010Venue: Morningside InnAbout Me: I'm a nerdy Northwestern girl who always knew she was meant to live in the East, harboring a deep love of ice cream, underwear, Diet Coke with a splash of Coca-Cola, pashminas, scrapbooking, stationery, wall calendars and books written for preteens. I think every day should include good thin crust pizza, chocolate, an obscure historical monument, lots of laughter, a dash of wedding planning and, of course, amazing Mr. Pencils! I'm loving the adventure of planning a Maryland wedding and Rocky Mountain reception, and most of all, I just love love!
Since Mr. Pencils and I both actually had weekdays off together, the holiday break presented a great (read: our only) opportunity to head to the courthouse to get our marriage license!
It was a cold, clear day in Frederick, Maryland. After a scrumptious lunch of Subway, Mr. P and I arrived at the county court house only to learn that our phones and camera weren’t allowed in. After Mr. Pencils ran them back to the car, we swore an oath to tell the truth, handed over our seventy five bucks in cash, and received our marriage license!
Once back outside, Mr. Pencils ran back to the car again to get our camera (love him!) and we took some shots to celebrate!
Mrs. Pretzel, SeattleAge and Occupation: 32 Learning, Training, and Development SpecialistFiance's Age and Occupation: 28 Manufacturing EngineerEngagement Date: September 2, 2009Wedding Date: July 2010Venue: Catholic Church & The Engine Room at Georgetown StudiosAbout Me: I’m just a thirty-something girl who never dreamed of weddings, poofy dresses, or ritzy receptions. I am a rabid knitter, except recently, wedding projects have replaced my yarn and needles. I’ve been fiercely independent since the age of 2 and 30 years later I think my family and friends had given up on me settling down and getting married.
Ironically, I had to go all the way to Seattle to find a boy from Purdue. We fell in love over Seattle Beers and cooking together. I love NASCAR, he loves Legos. I can talk like a Muppet and he can fit a whole McDonald’s cheeseburger in his mouth. We are a two reception couple, currently planning a brewery inspired bash.
Last month, Miss Snow posted a wonderfully informative graphic about weddings around the country. I almost snorted coffee out my nose when I saw that Seattle was the 4th most expensive city to get married in. Gulp! Why, you might ask, did we decide to get married here when neither of us is from here? When we first started to talk about getting married I offered up the suggestion that we get married in Fort Wayne, Mr Pretzel’s hometown. He quickly vetoed the idea, because he didn’t want the stress of planning a wedding from across country. I have to admit that I let out a sigh of relief because I wanted to get married somewhere we both considered home, and at that point I had never even been to Fort Wayne.
The decision was made; Seattle is our home and Seattle it would be. However, when we started to compile a guest list we noticed a concerning trend.
70% of our guest list is a plane ride away. After an informal poll of our families we made another concerning discovery. While a good percentage of my family will be coming to Seattle, we estimated that only 10% of Mr Pretzel’s family would be celebrating with us.
Mrs. Scissors, LaGrange, GAAge and Occupation: 25, Photography & Graphic DesignFiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Engineering Grad StudentEngagement Date: January 1, 2009Wedding Date: June 2010Venue: Ceremony - First United Methodist Church; Reception - My parents' house!About Me: I’m a six-foot-three bride with a fifty-foot personality! I love great art, fabulous design, intense color, tons of music, indie photography, watching movies on repeat, and being really awesome. This super-tall, Southern, loud, quirky, neurotic artist is marrying a German, quiet, silly, super-amazing roboticist in an eclectic, funky, fun, snazzy, technicolored June wedding. Anything is game for this shindig, for it is all about us! We’re bringing giant paper cranes, six-foot-tall portraits, fortune cookies, a photo booth, a club-circuit DJ, handcuffs, and possibly a kidnapping to this small Southern town. Watch out, y’all, and try to keep up!
I decided. I did it. I manned up and made a bridal decree. I grew some bridal balls. I put on my big-girl hat.
Last night, I officially decided on bridesmaids dresses. Color? Decided. Dress? Official. Much to my surprise, the walls didn’t crumble, the earth didn’t spin off of its axis, and nobody is mad at me. I stopped trying to people-please and just did it. I went with my gut. I’m in a state of shock that I actually made a decision, and I feel so relieved that I can check this off of my list.

Engagement Date: May 2, 2008Wedding Date: June 2010Venue: Indiana Memorial UnionAbout Me: I'm an Indiana transplant living in DC with my fiance and our pretty kitty. I enjoy the color pink, I'm obsessed with the Dior New Look and tulle, and I heart my level 80 paladin. I'm a sucker for bad TV, literary theory, and cakes of all persuasion. I also happen to be marrying the cutest closet nerd around! It's all about Bloomington for us because it's where we met -- on the college paper. If there's a theme for our small summertime wedding, it's Dior meets Dorothy Draper on a lark in Bloomington; think poofy, plus graphic prints, bold colors, and a whole lot of prettiness.
For fun, I wanted to share some excerpts from Dior himself, via The Little Dictionary of Fashion, with some notes from me. It’s always interesting to see what fashion geniuses think — you don’t have to agree 100 percent, but it’s amusing nonetheless!
Accent An accent is that little personal touch which makes a dress designed by a couturier your own dress. It is of great importance. With your feeling no one can do it better than you.
This is how I’ve started to approach wedding planning — yes, much of what I’m doing is unoriginal, but gosh darn it, it will still be mine. Read more…
Ms. Stripes, Los AngelesAge and Occupation: 29, Costume Designer/StylistFiancee's Age and Occupation: 29, ChefEngagement Date: June 23, 2009Wedding Date: September 2010Venue: Heritage Square MuseumAbout Me: I’m a type A creative with a messy streak, a loud mouth, and an uncanny knack for combining clashing patterns. I can usually be found with my nose in a book, my feet (or at least my toes) on the ground, my head in the clouds, and my arm around the prettiest girl you ever saw- aka
Fiancee Stripes. Together we’re planning a FUN vintage/modern French carnival wedding extravaganza and rockin’ dance party on a dime. (Say that three times fast!) Good coffee, long lists, Uniball pens, and my iPhone keep me sane, and making art, making trouble, and making out keep me happy! I love urban adventures, bike rides that end with afternoon drinks, breakfast for dinner, beautiful light, photography, travel, my furry family, and of course, my beautiful fiancee! I’m super excited to be here and can’t wait to share all our adventures as we craft a joyful, budget-friendly, design-savvy and all-around AWESOME wedding!
Like most things wedding, I had no idea what type of wedding band I wanted before getting engaged.*
I mean, they’re just little pieces of jewelry, right?
No big deal. Just little pieces of jewelry you wear for the REST OF YOUR LIFE. Little pieces of jewelry that symbolize love and commitment and a whole bunch of other big, weighty hard-to-describe emotions. Little pieces of jewelry you have to stare at for the REST OF YOUR LIFE.
Whoa! That means that in the grand scheme of wedding planning, wedding rings are a pretty big deal! We won’t have to live with our fill-in-the-blank-with-almost-any-other-wedding-detail-here for the rest of our lives. Nope. Just our rings and each other.
We could just go the easy route and get something matchy matchy a la:
Mrs. Sewing, San Mateo, CA/Honolulu, HIAge and Occupation: 24, Electrical EngineerFiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Electrical EngineerEngagement Date: June 27, 2009Wedding Date: July 2010Venue: Anela Garden Chapel & Japanese Cultural Center, HonoluluAbout Me: I'm an easily entertained, compulsive idea-scheming machine who loves good art, good food, and a good engineering challenge. I'm planning a half-destination wedding on the beautiful island of Oahu - imagine a plethora of movies, art and games; savory Hawaiian food; blended Chinese and Japanese cultural details; lush, fragrant tropical flowers and all the air conditioning a NorCal native could want! And once I marry the love of my life, we'll come back to the 'mainland' to party it up all over again in my hometown of Salinas, the salad-bowl capital of the world!
We ended up buying a Cuttlebug! Hooray! (Okay, yeah we eventually did get the heat embossing things too, but that’ll be for another time…)
We got it on sale at Michaels for 40% off… huzzah! But there was one little problem. I didn’t like any of the embossing folders they had at the store! And none of Provo Craft’s current line really worked with our theme.
So I ordered an embossing folder from a different company, Sizzix. To be specific, a Sizzix folder made exclusively for Stampin’ Up.

Mrs. Cub, Chile/PortlandAge and Occupation: 26, AstronomerFiance's Age and Occupation: 28, AstronomerEngagement Date: May 10, 2008Wedding Date: September 2009Venue: Westwind YWCA campAbout Me: I'm a small-town girl who's making a living in Chile, with her heart in the Pacific Northwest. I grew up in Southern California, went to high school in Texas, grad school in New Mexico, and now I can't wait to settle down in Oregon! I love pears, hazelnuts,
knitting, traveling, running, baking, and long talks on the phone with
good friends. I'm planning my Oregon coast summer camp wedding while
abroad with my best friend - I'm always at home when I'm with him!
I haven’t really told you much at all about our photographers thus far. That’s a shame - they’re first friends, second fabulous photographers.
Mr. Bear Cub and I asked my friends from college to photograph our wedding. I know this doesn’t work for everyone (they aren’t exactly “Uncle Bob” with a new DSLR & kit lens), but for us it worked out just right.
In college (at USC) I was a member of the climbing club. Los Angeles is a great place for rock climbing! There’s Point Dume (on the beach!), Malibu Creek State Park (Planet of the Apes, anyone?), Echo Cliffs, & so many more awesome places it’d be silly for me to list them all. Long story short, I had a blast with my fellow climbers! One of my friends in the climbing club, Susánica Tam, was getting serious about photojournalism - she took her camera everywhere! Susánica especially liked to capture action shots of us climbing in ridiculously gorgeous places, like Owens River Gorge and Joshua Tree. After graduation, she became a sports photographer, especially for rock climbing.

Mrs. Nachos, Chicago/St. ThomasAge and Occupation: 33, Commercial Real Estate & HairstylistFiance's Age and Occupation: 36, Radio ProducerEngagement Date: May 22, 2009Wedding Date: April 2010Venue: Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort, St. ThomasAbout Me: I'm a happy, laid back city girl that can find the silver lining in any situation. An optimist at heart, my motto is to turn your "what ifs?" into "so whats!". My fiance is a radio producer and the biggest Cubs fan you'll meet - our apartment decor definitely shows it. He and I grew up next door to each other and because of it, we have the best home videos and easiest holiday dinners. We are planning an intimate wedding in the Virgin Islands and a cocktail party in June for 150 of our closest friends.
With this being my second marriage, I wasn’t sure if I would, or even should have a shower, but everyone tells me that it will happen whether I like it or not. And I like it! And who am I to say no to a party? My friend Sharon started throwing around ideas for a shower for me, and she’s keeping me in the dark about the little details, so I’ll share with you all what I know so far. Sharon was faced with a few obstacles…
The first question was where to have it. I know she threw around the idea of having it in a party room in a restaurant, and she looked at Jimmy’s Charhouse as a possibility. However, I am a big fan of showers thrown in the comfy confines of someone’s home, so she then talked to my mom about possibly having it at my parents’. Good plan, if it wasn’t for my new little brother Charlie…
Mrs. Buttons, Clearwater, FLAge and Occupation: 24, "Working on it"Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Financial ServicesEngagement Date: June 13, 2009Wedding Date: May 2010Venue: Carlouel Yacht ClubAbout Me: I'm a self proclaimed perfectionist and a professional nomad (seriously, I've lived in TX, WI, MI, FL, NC, and now VA!). I love wine, cooking, curling up with a good book (nerd alert!), spoiling the furbaby, and of course, the wonderful Mr. Buttons! We are planning a lighthearted and whimsical wedding (with a good deal of DIY projects) in Clearwater, Florida, but from a distance of 800 miles away! We are looking forward to sharing our day with our family and friends, and most importantly, starting our lives together as husband and wife!
Have you ever had a point in your wedding planning when you suddenly changed direction? I totally had that moment… let me explain…
To be fair, in regards to the florals involved in the wedding, I never really had the “perfect” idea. I see flowers… I think they are pretty… but nothing has essentially jumped out at me as being the flowers I MUST see on our tables or in bouquets.
Here was the original plan:
Hydrangeas, hydrangeas, hydrangeas.
I was drawn by the “poofy-ness” of them, if you will. Oh no, wait…the florist suggested these… I more or less agreed. Don’t get me wrong, I think they are beautiful… but…
I’d been thinking a lot about my DIYing… my mother and I have decided that we are going to tackle the centerpieces ourselves. And I am a nit-pick. Hydrangeas are known to be delicate, and to die quickly. I started to worry about a wedding day hydrangea catastrophe. We can’t have partially brown flowers on our tables. I’d die.
Then comes the issue of price. Thankfully, with a DIY option, we can purchase flowers in bulk and save money by arranging them ourselves. However, flowers are still expensive…
Mrs. Hamster, New York CityAge and Occupation: 28, Finance GalFiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Finance GuyEngagement Date: March 9, 2009Wedding Date: May 2010Venue: The Pierre HotelAbout Me: I'm an original Jersey girl living it up in the big NYC! I love baking for others, hosting brunches, and exploring NYC with my mans. Besides Mr. Hamster (of course), I'm attracted to shiny things, bold colors, snacks, matching and coordination, pork and duck fats, miniature versions of things, corny jokes and puns. We are planning a swanky Spring wedding in the heart of NYC, followed by a second reception in Singapore. From one city that never sleeps to another - I can't imagine a more exciting ride!
Now that I had successfully dressed the ladies, the men, and myself, it was time to move on to the most nerve-wracking test of all:
Dressing my mom.
My mom is notoriously good at finding outfits for me (she picked out my prom dress in 30 seconds after I had seen nothing I liked in 5 stores. Granted, she was probably tired of the whole process by then). However, she rarely, if ever, finds anything for herself. Whenever we buy sweaters or the like as Christmas presents for her, my sister and I know to staple the receipt to the sales tag. Within her exclamation of “Thanks!” is an unsaid “I will put the cash I get from returning this to good use!”
The one big priority that my mom had, and I kid you not, was that the dress should be loose enough for her to eat with abandon at my wedding. Read more…
