Engagement Date: May 2, 2008Wedding Date: June 2010Venue: Indiana Memorial UnionAbout Me: I'm an Indiana transplant living in DC with my fiance and our pretty kitty. I enjoy the color pink, I'm obsessed with the Dior New Look and tulle, and I heart my level 80 paladin. I'm a sucker for bad TV, literary theory, and cakes of all persuasion. I also happen to be marrying the cutest closet nerd around! It's all about Bloomington for us because it's where we met -- on the college paper. If there's a theme for our small summertime wedding, it's Dior meets Dorothy Draper on a lark in Bloomington; think poofy, plus graphic prints, bold colors, and a whole lot of prettiness.
Inspired by Miss Scissors’ makeup post, I decided to confront my last DIY make-up trial. While it wasn’t the most dreadful thing ever, it also wasn’t yummy.
So, armed with a few new products, I’ve made progress. Here’s how I started.
I was already in my after work glitter sweats, sorry. Things to note: my light eyebrows, my pale-osity, and me forgetting to auto tone the photo. Here’s how I cleaned up. Read more…

Mrs. Sewing, San Mateo, CA/Honolulu, HIAge and Occupation: 24, Electrical EngineerFiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Electrical EngineerEngagement Date: June 27, 2009Wedding Date: July 2010Venue: Anela Garden Chapel & Japanese Cultural Center, HonoluluAbout Me: I'm an easily entertained, compulsive idea-scheming machine who loves good art, good food, and a good engineering challenge. I'm planning a half-destination wedding on the beautiful island of Oahu - imagine a plethora of movies, art and games; savory Hawaiian food; blended Chinese and Japanese cultural details; lush, fragrant tropical flowers and all the air conditioning a NorCal native could want! And once I marry the love of my life, we'll come back to the 'mainland' to party it up all over again in my hometown of Salinas, the salad-bowl capital of the world!
Recently, Mr. Sewing and I were presented with another hurdle the destination wedding decided to throw our way.
Officiants.
Sure, it would have been easy enough to book someone already in Hawaii, but we had to be difficult, didn’t we? You see, we have the blessing of being quite good friends with one of our “mainland” pastors, and it just seemed like a perfect idea to have him marry us. More meaningful, perhaps, since he already knows us as a couple.
So we talked to him, and as luck would have it, he was already planning a vacation with his family there that same summer! And as they hadn’t firmed up their plans yet, they moved their schedule around our date.
At this point I was pretty happy, we had our officiant, and he was someone I knew. What could go wrong?
Mr. Sew’s dad, even more practical than Mr. Sew himself, pointed out: “Is a California minister legally allowed to marry people in Hawaii?”
Mrs. Cowboy Boot, Santa FeAge and Occupation: 25, Magazine EditorFiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Artist and Whitewater Rafting GuideEngagement Date: April 28th, 2008Wedding Date: October 2009Venue: Devil's Thumb Ranch, ColoradoAbout Me: I grew up in Los Angeles and have since lived in San Diego, Boston, Italy, Hawaii, New York City, and Santa Fe. I speak Italian and love pasta. My real passion is the outdoors, though. When I'm not at work, I'm snowboarding, hiking with my two dogs, mountain biking, surfing, cross-country-skiing, or boating New Mexico's rivers. Despite my boyish love for adventure, I'm a girly-girl at heart and am overly-excited to pull off the romantic, vintage-inspired, country wedding of my dreams.
Once we finally arrived in Christchurch, on the east coast of the South Island, after our horrible debacle flying to New Zealand, we were ready to start our trip. One of our favorite parts? Our rental car and driving, not only on the wrong side of the road, but on the wrong side of the car! [Note: Mr. CB didn’t let me drive once. Probably a good thing.]
Day 1: Christchurch
We checked into our first hotel, The George, to find, well, George on our bed! Read more…
Mrs. Hot Wings, Chicago/San DiegoAge and Occupation: 28, ProfessorFiance's Age and Occupation: 32, InstructorEngagement Date: December 20, 2008Wedding Date: August 2010Venue: Ocean View Villas/Jasmine Seafood RestaurantAbout Me: I am a psychology grad student living in Chicago and planning my wedding to a fellow psych grad student. I am a Sunny So-Cal bred gal who trudged across the country to follow her love of psychology and ended up finding a partner in the process. I am overly passionate about anything I involve myself with. I am an activist, a foodie, a reality TV watching junkie, an over-analyzer, a photography obsesser, and am utterly cheesy to the core. This is a story of what happens when a boy and a girl meet, fall in love over academic dorkiness, and a shared love for life. We (mostly I) are planning our semi-destination wedding in my hometown of San Diego. We are excited to bring our families and friends together from across our lifespans to celebrate our future in a grand 400+ person culturally blended affair!
If you’ve never heard of The Veluz Bride, you are seriously missing out. She is a custom wedding dress maker from the Philippines and she makes some of the most ornate and stunning pieces of art I have ever seen. These are no ordinary dresses, my friends. They are dramatic and awe inspiring. Her brides are flawless and clearly one of a kind. Here are some of my faves. All images are from her blog.
Mrs. Cola, Mountain View, CAAge and Occupation: 27, Product Communications and PromotionsFiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Managing Partner and Senior DesignerEngagement Date: March 5, 2009Wedding Date: June 2010Venue: The Mountain Terrace, Woodside, CAAbout Me: I’m a Washington State native, enjoying life in Silicon Valley California with my fiancé, our three kitties and one leopard gecko. I like reading wedding blogs, Photoshopping wedding design mock ups, making lists, and planning, planning, planning! I’m a bit of an anomaly, on one side I’m a very girlie girl, I collect shoes, I lay out my outfits 4-6 weeks in advance, and I’d never leave the house without my hair curled and makeup on. But on the other side, I’m a total tomboy, I love to go camping and hiking, play drinking games (hey, I’m Irish!) and most of my closest friends are guys. My fiancé and I are planning a DIY-focused wedding with a balance between easygoing (what he wants) and chic and stylish (what I want), and are tying it all together with elements in lavender, sage, butter cream and chocolate.
I think for most brides, the “something new” is probably the easiest to figure out. I have my light gold dress, jewelry, veil (which my mom will be making, and I’ll share once it’s done), shoes (although there is a dilemma with them that I will also share at some point), hair accessories… much of what I’ll be wearing will be new, so check that “something” off the list!
Mrs. Frozen Yogurt, DallasAge and Occupation: 28, Special Projects CoordinatorFiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Equity TraderEngagement Date: March 19, 2009Wedding Date: April 2010Venue: Marie Gabrielle, DallasAbout Me: I was born and raised in Texas, and have lived in several of the cities across the state, but I currently reside in Austin. I went to college in Boston and have a special place in my heart for the Northeast. I love reading, shopping, wine, reuniting with college friends that are scattered across the country, reality TV, trying out new recipes, and attempting all the DIY projects that come along with wedding planning. I'm a "bleeding heart, save the world type" and thankfully my job allows me to work on legislation and policy to help out those in need. I met Mr. Frozen Yogurt in a bar, though he doesn't even drink! And now we are planning a modern yet vintage wedding in Dallas while dealing with the trials and tribulations of first time homeownership.
Now sing that title along to the tune of the Apprentice, because that’s what I did when I wrote it. OK, it’s time to get to the point of this post—combining finances. Mr. Fro Yo and I talked about this several times, but it always seemed so far off that we didn’t think we really needed to make a decision. Then, things got closer and closer and now we are less than 80 days until the big day. It is time to get serious. Read more…
Mrs. Buttons, Clearwater, FLAge and Occupation: 24, "Working on it"Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Financial ServicesEngagement Date: June 13, 2009Wedding Date: May 2010Venue: Carlouel Yacht ClubAbout Me: I'm a self proclaimed perfectionist and a professional nomad (seriously, I've lived in TX, WI, MI, FL, NC, and now VA!). I love wine, cooking, curling up with a good book (nerd alert!), spoiling the furbaby, and of course, the wonderful Mr. Buttons! We are planning a lighthearted and whimsical wedding (with a good deal of DIY projects) in Clearwater, Florida, but from a distance of 800 miles away! We are looking forward to sharing our day with our family and friends, and most importantly, starting our lives together as husband and wife!
Remember when I was oohing and ahhing over the thought of a custom dress illustration? Well, if there is one thing I have learned since entering into the world of wedding planning, it is that people can really come out of the woodwork, in a good way!
Shortly after posting about my desire for a beautiful illustration of my dress, an old friend from high school (we’ll call her A) got in contact with me. She went to college at Parson’s for fashion design (yes… location of Project Runway, Tim Gunn… sigh… OK I’m going off topic now…). Anyway, she offered her services… and I couldn’t be more excited about it!
Since she is so skilled, A is able to create the illustration in a number of different styles… it is up to me to decide which I like the most! These are the styles I have to pick from (but obviously, they’d be of my dress instead!)…
Mrs. Pudding, Greater Toronto Area/VermontAge and Occupation: 26, High School TeacherFiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Computer EngineerEngagement Date: August 2008Wedding Date: July 2010Venue: Catholic Ceremony, Cultural Hall ReceptionAbout Me: Quite literally a citizen of the world, I was born in Poland, grew up in Canada, and now live in the beautiful state of Vermont. I love reading historical biographies, multi-tasking, teasing my hair, and, despite my height, wearing high heeled shoes. I am the ultimate klutz with an uncanny ability to put on a graceful front. Mr. Pudding and I have been dating for over six years, and are very excited to finally merge our (very large) families. We are planning a traditional Polish-Catholic wedding that is anything but predictable.
OK, I have a bit of a confession to make. Some of you commented about the amount of work that went into our STDs, and I must admit that they took a considerable amount of effort to complete. Still, I withheld a little detail from you, and I have finally decided to come clean.
With our wedding guest list approaching 230, I only made about 30 STDs. I decided early on that not everyone on our list would get the blood, sweat and tears version. This decision was a fairly easy one for me, since save the dates are really not common in my family. Plus, all of my relatives have had our wedding date circled on their calendars for almost a year and a half now.
I probably wouldn’t have sent STDs at all if it wasn’t for the fact that Mr. Pudding’s family is traveling to our wedding. They needed to be given an appropriate amount of time to plan the trip, and I wanted to do this in an official way. Read more…

Mrs. Hamster, New York CityAge and Occupation: 28, Finance GalFiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Finance GuyEngagement Date: March 9, 2009Wedding Date: May 2010Venue: The Pierre HotelAbout Me: I'm an original Jersey girl living it up in the big NYC! I love baking for others, hosting brunches, and exploring NYC with my mans. Besides Mr. Hamster (of course), I'm attracted to shiny things, bold colors, snacks, matching and coordination, pork and duck fats, miniature versions of things, corny jokes and puns. We are planning a swanky Spring wedding in the heart of NYC, followed by a second reception in Singapore. From one city that never sleeps to another - I can't imagine a more exciting ride!
I know it sounds ridiculous, but let me tell you about these shoes. Or even better, I’ll let the shoes speak for themselves:
I feel the need to explain here. I didn’t set out to buy them. But I *did* hunt around this past weekend for some wedding shoes, and these were on major sale! There was one pair left, staring so longingly at me from the rack (a bit of projection here, I know) and for anyone who has been to a shoe sale in NYC, you know that I just had to snatch them up. I think every day should include good thin crust pizza, chocolate, an obscure historical monument, lots of laughter, a dash of wedding planning and, of course, amazing Mr. Pencils! I'm loving the adventure of planning a Maryland wedding and Rocky Mountain reception, and most of all, I just love love!
Love in the woods. AprilLee and her fiance celebrate their engagement on a perfect autumn day.

Since I’m getting married in Bloomington, I’m doing my own makeup for the wedding. I’m pretty particular about makeup, so putting it in the hands of a stranger with no trial was just too stressful.
Here’s the point where I’d show you my inspiration look. I have one, I swear, I just can’t find it online… but let’s just say it’s sort of like this. I want to look young and vibrant, not overdone. A bright lip, flushed cheeks, and natural-looking eyes.

Ms. Potato Chips, Boston/Narragansett RIAge and Occupation: 29, PhD StudentFiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Personal Trainer/Business Owner/Physical Therapy AssistantEngagement Date: January 1, 2009Wedding Date: June 2010Venue: The Narragansett TowersAbout Me: A semi-professional bookworm, if I could be a literary character I’d be a cross between Jo March and Jane Eyre, only better accessorized and much lazier. My hobbies include sleeping in, seasonal brews, running, Trader Joe’s, and watching Unwrapped and Good Eats with Mr. Potato Chips. I harbor an irrational fear of tulle, crafts, things that are fussy, and overuse of the phrase "Your Special Day". After a year or seven together, down the aisle we go, slouching toward adulthood and planning a Rhodie party with equal parts whimsy, cheer, and pizza.
The other day I was on the train (because that is my life: either on the train, waiting for the train, missing the train, or running, arms-flailingly, towards the train as it leaves the station) and Mr. Potato Head called.
“We got the house!” he said and for one split second I paused, like you do when you wake up and don’t know what day it is, and I considered the possibility that we’d been house hunting and had worked out a bank loan, met with realtors, and put it in a bid. And then I remembered that a) no, that never happened; b) he was talking about the beach house we wanted to rent for the wedding, and c) I watch too much House Hunters.
Ahh, the house! We’re renting it for the whole week prior to the wedding and offering it to our wedding party as a place to stay. Read more…
