Mrs. Jellyfish, Pleasanton, CA Age and Occupation: 27, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Air Force Pilot Engagement Date: February 21, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery About Me: In a nutshell, I’m the most optimistic worrywart you’ll ever meet. My family emigrated from Romania to San Jose, CA when I was 8, and I've been a Nor Cal girl ever since! My fiancé is also a Bay Area native, so it’s funny that we met at UCLA, as college freshmen living on the same floor (go Bruins!). Between his career as an Air Force pilot and my path to becoming a lawyer, our relationship has been anything but typical. We currently live together in Berkeley with our puppy Stinson. In addition to spending time with the loves of my life, I enjoy crafting, attempting complicated recipes, environmental law and non-law school reading (Us Weekly, anyone?). Follow along as I plan an elegant 200-person winery wedding, graduate law school, take the Bar exam, get married and get used to the always unpredictable but never boring life of a military spouse!

Invitation Indecision

March 1st, 2010 @ 5:21 pm by Mrs. Jellyfish

According to my wedding checklist, we need to start thinking about invitations. I’ve been thinking about invitations for a while now, but I haven’t found anything that fits the bill. Here is what I want: letterpress invitations on ivory paper with some kind of vine motif, in autumn colors (I tend to like brown or plum the best). Here is what I’ve found so far, starting with some designs from Wedding Paper Divas:

Invitation Indecision : wedding invitations stationery 11 1

“Vibrant Vineyard” invite from WeddingPaperDivas

PROs: I love the color, the vineyard motif and the writing. They’re also affordable, which is always a plus!

CONs: I prefer a vertical layout, and this is horizontal. Also these are digital offset printing (so, they’re not letterpress), and they seem a little informal to me.

Invitation Indecision : wedding invitations stationery 21 2

“Rustic Print” in Cabernet by WeddingPaperDivas

PROs: Vertical layout which I like, cool fading watercolor-like design

CONs: Digital printing, a little plain

Invitation Indecision : wedding invitations stationery 31 3

“Modern Whimsy” in Cinnamon by WeddingPaperDivas

PROs: Vertical layout, elegant design

CONs: The design isn’t that unique, digital offset printing (do you see a trend here?)

Invitation Indecision : wedding invitations stationery 41 4

Letterpress “Vintage Pattern” by WeddingPaperDivas

PROs: Nice design, letterpress

CONs: Not 100% sold on design, it’s pretty expensive

Invitation Indecision : wedding invitations stationery 51 5

Letterpress “Winery Gate” by WeddingPaperDivas

PROs: Unique design, letterpress

CONs: I don’t like the fonts (but they can be changed for free), and again, letterpress is expensive.

Wedding Paper Divas has a lot of pretty designs, and I’ve heard they’re great to work with. The website is also very easy to use and you can even enter all your information and see a digital proof of what your invite would look like. I’ve also looked at Invitations by Ajalon, which is a small letterpress printer in Sonoma. They have pretty reasonable letterpress prices.  They will also take any PDF you give them and make custom letterpress invitations. This would be appealing if I had ANY design ability, but sadly, I do not. I don’t even own Adobe Photoshop. Anyway, here are the designs I liked from Invitations by Ajalon:

Invitation Indecision : wedding invitations stationery 61 6

Kourtesis invitation suite

Invitation Indecision : wedding invitations stationery 71 7

Close-up of Kourtesis

PROs: I love the look and feel of their letterpress (got some samples in the mail and they look great!). I also like this design because it looks somewhat vineyard-y.

CONs: I’d have to pay extra to get the cardstock backing, which I really like. I suppose I could DIY that, though. I think I’d also change the fonts a bit; I think the font they show is a little hard to read. I’d also change it from horizontal to vertical.

Invitation Indecision : wedding invitations stationery 81 8

Savannah Invitation Suite

Invitation Indecision : wedding invitations stationery 91 9

Close-up of Savannah invitation

PROs: Pretty, swirly vineyard-y motif, delectable letterpress

CONs: The motif has birds in it. I’m not into the bird trend, so I don’t really like that. Also I’d obviously change the colors of the invitation and just do it all in one color, probably a plum.

The last set of invitations that I liked come from Hello! Lucky:

Invitation Indecision : wedding invitations stationery 10 10

Vineyard invite from Hello! Lucky

PROs: Nice, simple, elegant design in scrumptious letterpress

CONs: Pricey. They’re $3.61 for each invitation, and that doesn’t include the RSVP cards or anything else. It’s not bad for letterpress, but it still seems like a lot to me.

Those are basically the front runners at this point.

Which do you like best? What was the determining factor in picking out your wedding invitations? And more importantly, can anyone talk me out of my love affair with letterpress?

‘Winery Gate’ and ‘Vineyard’ are my faves. I don’t think I can talk you out of letterpress :)

I scanned etsy FOREVER and knew I’d found our invitations when they just plain jumped off the screen and hit me over the head. Love when that happens.

Can’t wait to see what direction you decide to go in! :)

I was looking into the same ones from Ajalon! I decided not to end up doing letterpress though and found a great dealer on Etsy I might go with. And I also sent that very first one to my friend this morning for an idea for her vineyard wedding. I deiced if I am trying to “save” money and not go over budget, not doing letterpress would be one way, everyone throws them out anyway!

Rustic Print is soooo pretty. Autumny and simple, but the watercolor fade is very memorable as it is definitely not something one sees often on an invitation!

I will give it a go to talk you out of letterpress, but only since you asked! It is pricey. Noticeably, you-said-so-yourself pricey. And really… even though we will all probably frame and forever save a copy of our invitations, no one else will. That’s my best shot. If you love it, you love it, and no bee shall come between you and your letterpress. :)

I just received my invites from Wedding Paper Divas in the mail last week and I really love them. They aren’t letterpress, because I couldn’t convince the Mr. that they were really worth the investment. At this point, I probably agree. I am really happy with them anyways.

I did get the ones that were printed on the textured paper…so at least I still get the feeling of a textured invite without having to do letterpress. I really like the first one, and don’t really think it’s too informal. But for letterpress, I really like the Savannah…I didn’t notice the birds until you said something!

Oh man, I pretty much like them all! I had the same problem finding designs I liked with birds in them! Nothing against birds, just not for us! I think my favorite is the Vintage Pattern invite…. and I too LOVE letterpress!

I think that Winery Gate is my favorite of the selections.

We had a hard time with our invitations because nothing was really jumping out at us, and nothing really had all of the elements we were looking for: fun, visually interesting, and not really traditional/formal. We thought about having them custom designed but the quotes on that were fantastically out of our budget, so we decided to design them ourselves!

Though they won’t be letterpressed (booo), they really say ‘us’ when you look at them, and we totally had a ball doing them. Even if you don’t have the graphic design know-how to do it yourself, a friend with some photoshop/fireworks/illustrator skills might be able to help you out.

I love vineyard from hello lucky and the winery gate ones from wpd. But, etsy has a lot of amazing designers too, you could always work with one of them, like Mrs. Gloss, she’s awesome!

You totally don’t need to be talked out of letterpress. I was never into letterpress but I got a recommendation from another bee and OMG HEAVEN! I love love love my invitations - they are my fav part of the wedding so far. The best part? They are SUPER affordable. Her name is Liz Bardwell at Blush Design Studio. PM me if you need more info!

We considered the Modern Whimsy in Cinnamon too, it’s a nice design. I really like Kourtesis! We’re looking into getting letterpress or thermography for our inserts into the pocketfolds we’re getting.

We kept our simple and art deco-y, except now I’m considering letterpressing them. Gah!

Definitely Kourtesis - I love the paper backing. But Vibrant Vineyard is pretty awesome also.

I like the Kourtesis best and I second your idea about doing your own cardstock backing. It’d be simple and cheaper. I think the colors are the best on this one and it’s the most elegant!
