Mrs. Guinea Pig's Picture
Mrs. Guinea Pig, Baltimore, MD Age and Occupation: 26, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit Engagement Date: December 25, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club About Me: I'm a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!
About Mrs. Guinea Pig

… especially when it comes to origami hearts! See what I did there, see? (Pats self on back for particularly bad wordplay.)

I saw this post on Green Wedding Shoes this week and my brain pretty much started screaming you must make these. After all, weddings are all about the love (which = hearts, right?), and we already know I’ve signed myself up for way too many origami flowers! Amy of Eat Drink Chic used these origami hearts as invitations to her engagement party, which I think is an amazing idea.

Oh Origami... You've Stolen My Heart : wedding crafts Eatdrin eatdrin

(front and back of origami heart, all photos from Eat Drink Chic)

On the front she used a favorite quote, with the arrow indicating to guests that they should open it for a note inside (which for them was the information about their engagement party)!

Oh Origami... You've Stolen My Heart : wedding crafts Eatdrin01 eatdrin01

(the bottom panel shows the heart when it’s opened up)

My brain immediately started working furiously to figure out how I could incorporate these into our wedding. My first thought was favor tags! How cute would these be with our names/wedding date on the outside and a heartfelt (Ha! Again!) thank you note on the inside? The answer: very cute. So cute I’m going to show you my mockup (please ignore the black lines at the edges - those were so I could figure out text alignment):

Oh Origami... You've Stolen My Heart : wedding crafts Mockuph mockuph

(sorry for the blurred names and date)

Oh Origami... You've Stolen My Heart : wedding crafts Mockupheart Inside

(I know, you’re jealous of the clever handwritten message inside…)

Obviously if I were actually making these I’d put a little more effort into some color, a better front design and a more awesome note inside, but for now this would do as a trial run.

Mr. GP watched me with great curiosity as I clapped with delight, printed something out, cut it up, then started folding like mad. At the end, I showed him my (brilliant) idea, and his response brought me back to earth: “Do we really have enough time to make 180 of these things in addition to all the other stuff?”

Hm. He has a point - time is at a premium. We have a friend who is putting together our favors for us (more on that later), and has volunteered to package them up with ribbon and tags for us. As in, there is no extra work for me. So what am I doing creating work by insisting we use these origami hearts as tags for the favors?! For now, I’ll have to concede that Mr. Guinea Pig is right. I shouldn’t take this task on until we finish the other already-started projects… but you better believe part of my brain is still furiously working on coming up with a place to use these, even if not as favor tags!

What would you use these origami hearts for? Have you had to say ’no’ to any projects you fell in love with too late? Will someone please make these and use them so I can live vicariously through you?

OMG I just saw these on E,D,C too! The photo instructions looked pretty intense so I just filed it away for ‘maybe’. Was it easy to figure out? Depending on how long it took to make 1, I totes think you could crank out 180 if u set aside an hour or 2 each day for a few days. They’re super cute and worth it :)

these are really cute! i’ve had to say “no” to many a thing because i know i will not be up to it and want to enjoy as much as possible the time leading up to the wedding. i wonder if there’s another way to incorporate these that don’t require 180 of them? for example, if you’re making out of town bags, chances are you don’t have 180 of them, could you use these hearts in those?

I saw these and fell in love too! I am going to use them as escort cards. I haven’t figured out how to arrange them for my guest to pick up, but they’re a great DIY project.

@Breezy: It wasn’t too bad to figure out, I think because it has some of the same folds as one of the flowers I’m making! My first one was not exactly pretty, though. I should time myself when I make one, but it’s definitely not a quick process. Problem is I’ve already set aside an hour or two each day for the flowers and other things I’m making! Running out of hours in the day….
@Miss Pug: Ooh, genius Pug! Definitely could be used as tags for the OOT bags!
@Gala: Yes these would be perfect escort cards! We already had escort cards settled or I totally would have jumped on that. I’m jealous - show us photos of your finished project!

too cute! I actually wanted to make fortune tellers (or whatever you called them when you were little) for some portion of the wedding… never got around to it!

Oh soo super cute. Could you still use them as a tag on bathroom goodies or to label programs or something like that? Or maybe for bridal showers? I’ve had to give up a lot of projects. I get obsessed with everything.

These could work nicely as the “wishes” on a guestbook tree. If you’re using sparklers, tied to the sparklers noting your names and the time of the send-off. Tags on any number of things…escort cards, place cards…

They could be teeny little menus and you could put one on each plate?

You know, how about using these as escort cards instead? People are more likely to keep them if it has their names on it. You could have them all folded, then write guest names on it, with a generic ‘Thank You!’ inside, along with table no.?

@krissybee: A wish tree is a great idea as a use for these! Unfortunately for me, I’d still have to fold 180 of them :)
@Miss Hot Wings: You know what, bridal shower or bachelorette is a great idea, thanks! Much smaller scale!
@sapphirebride: Love the idea to put them on the sparklers, but I wonder if it’s good to put paper that close to sparks?
@Mrs. Mouse: Ha! World’s smallest menus… too bad we’re having a buffet!
@mrspaetz: We’ve already folded about a million petals to make origami flowers as escort cards. Otherwise I would have totally jumped on that idea….
