For The Love of Dahlias

March 2nd, 2010 @ 1:32 pm by Mrs. Rainbow

I think the title says it all.

When we had originally planned to get married in May, I thought, ‘Oh fabulous, right in the middle of spring! I can have any flower I want!’ Yeah, apparently I was wrong. Granted, our original date was smack dab in the middle of peony season. Great right? I mean, what bride doesn’t love peonies? So fluffily and ruffily and beautiful.

Yeah, well, whatever. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love peonies, I think they’re absolutely gorgeous, but they’re not my end-all-be-all wedding flower. I know some ladies would kill for their weddings to be during peony season, but I would be just as happy substituting cabbage roses for peonies.

Would you like to know what my end-all-be-all wedding flower is? That’s right, the dahlia. The one damn flower that isn’t available in May. Just. My. Luck. I was so obsessed with dahlias that I asked and re-asked about 4 different florists if they were 100% absolutely sure that they couldn’t get dahlias in May. Much to my dismay, each and every one of them were 100% absolutely sure that they couldn’t get dahlias in May. Drats.

BUT THEN!

We changed our date to October. Can I be honest with you for a minute? I was so freaking excited to postpone our wedding until October because it meant I could have dahlias. That wasn’t the reason we changed it, of course (I’m not that crazy!) but it’s definitely one of the perks. Shall we browse some of my lovelies?

Swoon. I love them so much, and they come in so many colors and shapes and sizes. I can’t wait to carry some of these babies down the aisle.

What’s your favorite flower?

I love peonies and dahlias and ranunculas and anemones and I totally understand how excited you are about your flowers! I’m so glad that you get to have the flowers you want! :)

I absolutely love Irises, but I don’t think they make a very pretty bouquet flower, so I’m not going to have them at my wedding. I’m going with Sunflowers, spray roses, and hydrangea instead

They really are a gorgeous flower, and we’d be using them too if we had a fall wedding. :)

I don’t think I have a favorite flower, though! I like peonies, but I like tulips, and we’re using roses.

I love them both :) I still haven’t worked out my flowers just yet, but I know sunflowers will be in there somewhere.

I’m in love with Dahlias too! They’re so lush but architectural! I may even have our centerpieces just be dahlias floating in water with candles!

We are having dahlias at our wedding too!

We actually sort of had this decision made for us: When we went in to sign the paperwork with our venue, they mentioned that the event right before our wedding that day was a flower expo - a DAHLIA expo. And that in prior years, the Dahlia society was willing to leave the flowers there for a nominal donation to the society. So that is what we are doing! Tons of gorgeous, cheap flowers, just sitting there waiting for us! I don’t think I could have planned it better if I tried. I love the idea of many colors and types of dahlias at each table - our table runners and other items on the table will have our wedding colors in them to tie everything together.

I also realize the beauty of Peonies but ehhh it does absolutely nothing for me. I love orchids and calla lillies. I do have dahlias in my bridesmaid bouquets.

I’m with you, peonies are nice and all but I’m not about to go crazy for them - give me dahlias, dahlias, more dahlias! Our florist is fine with coming up with tons of them for our late July wedding in Seattle; what a lucky coincidence because I had no idea what dahlia season was when we picked our date. (I didn’t even really know what a dahlia was actually…)

I’m getting married in Oct too and am all about the Dahlias as well. Plus garden roses. @LittlestBirds, you’re so lucky to live in WA - there are SEVERAL Dahlia farms near you. In fact, I’m thinking of doing my own flowers and having them shipped from a Dahlia farm in WA.

I’m a peony gal myself, but if I was getting marrie din fall, it’s be orange dahlia’s all the way!

I was obsessed with dahlias too and my wedding was in October. We had first chosen mums because they were cheaper. But every week my husband and I went to this outdoor market by our work for lunch. Every week the guy with the fresh dahlia stand was there and I would swoon over the dahlias. My husband (then fiance) knew how much I loved them. He finally said he’d be willing to let me pay more to get them. At our very final floral meeting I asked the florist if I could switch to dahlias. She said yes, and she wasn’t even going to charge us more! Score!
They looked really bright and lovely on our tables. I was a little sad though that by the end of the night they were mostly dead. I’m not sure if they weren’t soaking up water or what, but all of them were wilting and were thrown away!
They still looked gorgeous though during the day!
