Judging Vienna

March 2nd, 2010 @ 2:24 pm by Mrs. Pencils

So, as I watched Ms. PChipz on BeeTV last night, I also indulged in the season finale of The Bachelor: On the Wings of Love. No lie.

In the episode, Vienna (a final contestant) met Jake’s (the Bachelor) parents. It was a high stress moment, as Jake’s family judged Vienna based on what they knew about her: that the girls in the house disliked her. As soon as they met her, they passed a judgment that a girl who was openly disliked by twenty women couldn’t be the right woman for Jake. As they got to know Vienna, however, they felt bad for judging her.

I’ll admit it; I’m not a Vienna fan. However, last night’s episode brought up a memory: the night I met Mr. Pencils’ parents. Let’s go back.

It was February of 2004. We were freshmen in college and silly eighteen-year-olds. Mr. Pencils’ (now eighteen year old) brother was twelve, and his family lived a mere forty minutes away from our college campus. One Sunday evening, we made the trek to a seafood restaurant in his hometown and I met his wonderful mother, his funny stepfather, and his sweet little brother.

However, at the time, I had a boyfriend. I met Mr. Pencils’ family as a “friend” and yet we all agreed—it was pretty obvious there was more there.

I wonder what Mr. Pencils’ family must have thought of me—this crazy girl from Idaho who had some sort of ties elsewhere, coming to meet the parents. Was I a fling? A friend? A passing ship in the night?

Six years later, I know my future family loves me, and they tell me so, often.

My handsome future brother-in-law!

I can’t help but wonder: what were the unspoken thoughts going through their minds? If there had been a video camera to capture that night, would I have been a Vienna or a Tenley (the other contestant)?

How did your first meeting of the parents go? Spill!

We were twelve when I met his mom for the first time. She had made delicious brownies for our school play “Annie” and I thanked her for making them. I’m sure they have had different opinions about me over the years, but I love them and hope/know they feel the same!

I wasn’t nervous at all and neither was my FI. I loved his parents (and still do) and they embraced me with big open arms. My FI is only one of two children, the other is a boy too, so his mom was VERY happy to have a girl around. :)

Oh man, my FI had dated such ‘winners’ before me that I had to prove to them I wasn’t like the rest of them. Took a while for his mom to warm up to me but now she is amazing and loving and i”m very lucky!

I was super nervous! But, I met his sister first and then his mom on another trip, and it was a good way to ease into the meeting of the fam.

Heh. The first time I met my FMIL, she loved me, which was great as she hated all of the other girlfriends she had met. Our second get together didn’t go as well. We ended up getting into this huge argument related to feminism and strip clubs, and at the end, she basically called me a whore. My fiance was hiding upstairs the whole time. The next morning, though, FMIL was completely normal and acted like nothing had happened. And when we told her that we were engaged, she was thrilled.

I met the FI’s parents first as friends as well! I was dating his roommate at the time and his mom cooked dinner for us at their college apartment. I don’t know what she thought of me at the time!

When we first met, my husband’s father accidentally called me by my husband’s ex’s name. He felt awful about it, but I just laughed and the tension was gone. It’s been great ever since. :)

Aww! I met Mr. GP’s parents like a month after we started dating, and it was nerve-wracking. It felt so high pressure because it was like I was auditioning or something! But they are wonderful, so it ended up being fun :)

I met my FI’s mom on the last day of finals the first semester of our Freshman year of college. I hadn’t slept in like, 2 days since I was writing papers, so I was a mess and a nervous wreck to meet her! But she had made me a gift bag full of amazing oatmeal raisin cookies as a Christmas present, and then I knew we would be friends. I ate those things back in my dorm room writing my last paper of the semester. She still makes them for me every Christmas.

Hmm I don’t actually remember the first time I met his parents too well. I think it was rather uneventful. We went to his parent’s house and his mom had a meal cooked for us. It wasn’t a big introduction or anything. Just life like normal for them.

I do remember meeting his brother’s family though. They were the first people I met in his family because they also lived in the town where we were interning when we first started dating. I made sure to wear a nice outfit and put makeup on. When we got to their house his two nieces had put signs up on the front door that they drew with crayons. The signs said “Welcome Steve and Steve’s friend” and they had a picture of a boy and girl stick figure. So cute. His nieces were only 7 and 2 at the time. Now they are 12 and 7 and the 7 year old was our flowergirl! It’s been fun to watch them grow up.

Haha I love your Bachelor reference. I also love the fact that you’re from Idaho (me too!) I’ve known my in-laws since I was 12, so I didn’t have a scary meet the parents moment. However, my fiance has two older brothers who are single, so I’ve gotten to be the sister-in-law to interrogate the girls that the two older boys bring home.

Aw, your story is cute!

We had a hard time with the FILs at first, because we started dating at 14 and were pretty serious about each other right away. Nothing else freaks parents out like being in love and committed at such an early age - I think they were worried we’d throw our lives away and have babies in high school, dropout, not go to college, or something. Once they realized that we were being smart about our decisions, they really opened up. I couldn’t ask for a better family.

I’ve had those moments with people before - judging them based on what I’ve heard, and I always end up regretting it! One of those people is now a good friend of mine!

I remember the night very well and I knew from the start of the evening by the way that Mr Pencils was talking and anticipating that it was not a fling but was a serious connection. I cannot imagine how hard it must have been to come into this crazy family but that first night I knew that you were an intelligent, strong, caring, funny beautiful young woman who I was pretty sure that my son was going to spend the rest of his life with! We are thrilled to have you as a big part of this family and I cannot imagine our lives without you in it! BTW I did not like Vienna at all and I think that this Batchelor was the worst evfer!

Gotta love that Bachelor reference :-) I’m convinced he sees Vienna as the “popular” girl he could never get…ANYWAYS…I love your story, that’s such a fun memory to look back on. And isn’t it great to have in-laws you LIKE?? My in-laws and I would not make a good movie…we get along too well.
