On the Way to the Hair Salon…

March 2nd, 2010 @ 11:21 am by Mrs. Pug

…I must have lost a few brain cells.

Remember the hairstyle I wanted?

Remember my hair trial? Here was the finished product.

I really liked it, but could have done without so many curls, which was due my long, long, long hair:

Keep in mind my hair is curled in the above picture, so it was a few inches longer when straight. At the time, my hair/makeup artist, Aimee Lam, gently asked whether I *always* kept my hair that long—as if to say please, hon, chill on the Rapunzel.

I figured suuure, I have *tons* of hair to spare. So a couple of weeks ago I went in for a haircut. And I’m not sure where my usual fear-of-change and risk-averse personality went, but I asked the stylist to lop off a good chunk. No fear!

Not pleased with myself.

While not shockingly short, I’m concerned that it’s too short to achieve the curled low updo that I want.

So on my way back from the salon, after having lost said previous brain cells, I then started to lose perspective. At that point, it wasn’t even a matter of whether my hair could physically be formed into the above hairstyle (because looking at it now, it’s not *that* short). I was absolutely convinced that I had ruined my chances of achieving my beloved hairstyle and kicked myself for having gotten such a short haircut so close to the wedding.

Eventually, Mr. Pug injected a little sense back into me by saying: “Honey you’re going to look beautiful no matter what, this isn’t something you have to worry about.” (Two brownie points, maybe even three, for that man!)

Whether I can or cannot get the hairstyle, psychologically this is a lesson for me to “let go”. I wanted a particular hairstyle. I may not get it. But Mr. Pug is right. I’ve hired a hair/makeup artist who is uber talented and whom I love, who will do an amazing job in making me up all pretty with or without this hairstyle. Right? I mean, who freakin’ fixates on a HAIRSTYLE??

Let go, let flow. (Of course, I say this after I asked our local vitamin peddler whether prenatal vitamins would help my hair grow faster in a month. He looked at me funny.)

Anyone else make an “oops” or two before the wedding? Does anyone need a little jolt back into reality that it’s okay if you don’t get what you originally envisioned?

Wow, your hair trial is gorgeous. That’s exactly how I wanted my hair to look but it didn’t turn out quite like that! For one thing, everytime she started off in a low updo for me I always felt like it wouldn’t stay in place all day so then she moved it up higher. Did you feel like your low updo was secure enough?

My (wedding) hair keeps me awake at night, no joke. And my stylist just lopped off a chunk of it two weeks ago since I’m using extensions, convincing me that the extra length is unnecessary and my hair will look fuller… except now I hate it on an everyday basis.

@amariem25: my updo felt very secure, but that might have been the length of my hair plus the can of hairspray that she used (i’m not kidding). i’m sure yours looked gorgeous!
@Miss Spaniel: ooh, hair extensions–smart! i’m sure your current haircut looks great, by the way :)

I dunno if this helps, but I would have *totally* had the same reaction. Hahaha. But Mr. Pug is right, you will look beautiful no matter what!

I don’t usually post here, but thought I’d chime in with the following: in my opinion, your hair (at its currently length) is certainly long enough for the updo you posted. And you might even like it better, since you previously disliked the volume created by the curls in your long hair. My hair is about as long as your new length — if anything, mine is an inch shorter — and I’ve had three different updos done in various trials, one of which looked quite similar to your desired ‘do. I think you’ll still get what you want.

I just had that thought when I got my hair cut 2 weeks ago. Your honey gets brownie points no doubt. It’s easy to lose perspective. Let go and let it flow is a great piece of advice.

Your HT pix are so beautiful! And I think you can acheive that look with your new length, no problem!

I had a drastic change a couple weeks ago with the length, although it was after begging the hairstylist not to take any length off. He promised not to, then chopped off 3 inches. I was so mad, I wrote a bad review of the salon on citysearch (my first review ever!) and it was immediately deleted. I will never use citysearch again to research a salon, rookie mistake.

@AnnieP: even though i was trying to be all “let go and let flow” about the hair, i have to admit that your comment makes me excited that i *can* get the hairstyle! i’m such a hypocrite.

Haha! That is something I would totally do. I asked the same thing about prenatal vitamins to some guy at GNC.

So do prenatal vitamins help with hair growth? Do they? DO THEY?!?!?!

Pug, I love it and I think you can accomplish your updo with your hair that length. So you’re good!

I think you can definitely still do your updo with that length! I like it!

I was getting tired of growing out my hair so I’m glad you posted this. I’m also going for a low and curly updo so I think I would’ve freaked if I cut off my hair. I was *this* close to getting a bob the other day, so it would’ve been a significant cut. I think I’ll hold on and do the traditional PWC.

On another note, I’m taking B12 with folic acid mostly for nail strength (I’m super clumsy and I break mine constantly) and it’s supposed to be good for hair growth as well.

Soon after I got engaged, I got my haircut. I had short hair prior to the engagement (I CHOPPED it) so I’ve been growing it out and getting occasional trims. One trim turned into a all on layering job. When I went to my hair and makeup girl for engagement photos, she was like.. can you grow out your layers please? :) oops.

you’re hair is totally a good length for an updo, i had the same problem, i grew my hair so long it got way to heavy to do what i wanted, so about a month and a half before i cut my hair to my shoulders (prob a good inch to 2 shorter than yours) and i wore it up with no problem, it actually made the hairstyle a LOT better and easier for my stylist being so much less to deal with. (and take it from me i had about 12 trials, lol) You’ll look GREAT!

after all those months since the hair trial, your hair now is probably only 1-2 inches shorter than it was then.

you are supremely melodramatic.
