Mrs. Hamster's Picture
Mrs. Hamster, New York City Age and Occupation: 28, Finance Gal Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Finance Guy Engagement Date: March 9, 2009 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Pierre Hotel About Me: I'm an original Jersey girl living it up in the big NYC! I love baking for others, hosting brunches, and exploring NYC with my mans. Besides Mr. Hamster (of course), I'm attracted to shiny things, bold colors, snacks, matching and coordination, pork and duck fats, miniature versions of things, corny jokes and puns. We are planning a swanky Spring wedding in the heart of NYC, followed by a second reception in Singapore. From one city that never sleeps to another - I can't imagine a more exciting ride!
About Mrs. Hamster

I’ve never given much thought to lighting. I try to make sure they’re off before I leave my apartment. I turn them on when I realize I’m squinting while reading. We are basic On/Off people. Someday we might upgrade to dimmers. Or even a Clapper if we’re real lucky. But that’s about it.

Of course, once you enter the world of wedding planning, you need* “big, fancy” lights. I, for one, did not know this. I’m pretty sure our ballroom has a dimmer switch, which was crazy enough for me. But then I learned about the different lighting options available, and I must admit they are quite impressive. Behold:

1. Pinspots

As the name implies, pinspots are concentrated spotlights that bring attention to certain details - most usually the centerpieces.

2. Gobo

Gobos are used to project images on walls or the dance floor - you can often customize them with your names, monogram, or other design of your choosing.

3. Ceiling Wash

Washes of color can be applied to any part of the room, but I’ve seen some really cool ceiling washes. A wash basically bathes (oh, is that why it’s called a wash? Duh.) the room in a soft ambiance of color.

4. Uplighting

Most commonly used to add color to the perimeter walls, uplighting is offered in a multitude of colors (think blue for a cool winter wedding).

(you can see the pinspots on the arrangements as well)

After reviewing these options, the Mister and I ended up selecting only the pinspot option, to showcase our centerpieces. Why so simple, you ask? The first reason is that our reception room is pretty ornate and decorated, so we didn’t need to add too much extra. If, by contrast, we had a blank loft space as a canvas, we might have gone for some uplighting and ceiling washes. Secondly (and the real reason), we didn’t really budget for lighting, so this was a little “Surprise!” moment for us. As my mom said, “Doesn’t the room come with lights already?”

*You don’t “need” need. I don’t think anything in a wedding is absolutely necessary besides your significant other and your mutual desire to get married. But it’s one of those “I don’t know I needed that” things that kinda snuck up on us.

Will you be having special lighting? Are you as clueless about lighting as I was?

I am definitely going to do some special lighting, and I am leaning towards a “wash”. Do you know how pinspots work (do they leave unsightly cords?)

I think candlelight can do wonders, too. We aren’t even opting for candlelight, though….it’s a daytime wedding, and the ballroom has huge windows that will bring in lots of sunlight. :-)

Great post! I just made the decision to do some up lighting. It seems to be one of those little things that creates a huge ambiance!

Great information. I had no idea. Our venue has a dimmer and I think that will be the extent of that. I can’t wait to see your lights though!

Now I’m really glad we’re having our wedding outdoors. I would _so_ be worrying about this - I had no idea.

LOVE uplighting and the pinspots, it definitely makes a difference. I think the right kind of lighting can add that special midas touch to an already beautiful table setting.
For me, I would say the special lighting, gold chivari chairs, and gold charger plate rentals were all items I definitely did not “need” at my wedding…but think they were totally worth the splurge!!

We haven’t decided about our lighting yet, but I had to jump in and say I _love_ the clapper! We both hate getting out of bed to turn the lights off at night, so we’d joked about the clapper (i.e. I would clap and he would dutifullly get up and turn the lights off). Then this Christmas I bought one for him, mostly as a gag gift, but it’s awesome! I don’t care if it makes me a 80’s throwback, I’ll never give it up!

I would love to do some uplighting or washes but it’s just not in the budget. Guess I’ll stick to candlelight! :o/

I am still so clueless about lighting. I have no idea about anything useful. I just know I like lanterns, etc. I’m so not helpful to my father or our lighting peeps. :p

ours was all natural light because three of the four walls were literally glass from floor to ceiling.

I was a total rookie when talking w/ our vendor about lighting. :D We went w/ uplighting and it truly did wonders for our reception room.

We’ll be doing uplighting. Although I really like the look of pinspots too! I had never heard of washes before this post. Thanks for enlightening me!

I love the monogram light on the wall or dance floor - what a fun and cost-effective way to work in your colors and theme.

Oh boy - lighting is one of those things I never knew I needed and now I feel like I must have too! It’s going to cost an arm and a leg though so we may just do uplighting…we’ll see.

Thanks for the great post! We will use the gobos to give our venue the “Enchanted Forest” look/feel.

@DC Mizzie: I’m not sure how they work, but I don’t remember seeing any unsightly cords at the weddings I’ve been to - so I think they are either cordless or the lighting people hide the cords really well :)

@ChiCat: So jealous of your Clapper - I know what I’m asking for for Christmas this year.

Only using string lights and definitely was totally clueless about lights before wedding planning…To be honest, not a huge fan of uplighting or washes personally…

I never even thought about lights. Still haven’t, actually! I’m not a huge fan of fancy lighting, but we might grab some string lights on clearance after Christmas!

I had no clue either! Thank goodness for our coordinator, Angel. I have to say that I was kind of skeptical about having to pay for lighting (yeah, I’m cheap like that), but the amber uplights really warmed up the room (and made everyone look good in photos, and the purple uplights were an efficient way of bringing our colors into the room without having to pay for draping, etc. And pinspots were totally worth it, since they weren’t too expensive and brought such drama and romance to the tables (and made the centerpieces look cool). ;-)

@DC Mizzie: The pinspots are installed on rebars above the room, so yes, there are cords, but you won’t see them.
