Mrs. Rainbow's Picture
Mrs. Rainbow, Tampa Age and Occupation: 22, Makeup Artist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Electrical Engineer/Programmer Engagement Date: November 27, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Gamble Plantation About Me: I'm a quirky (and slightly Type-A) freelance makeup artist who was born in Washington State, raised in Alabama, and now living with my one and only in sunny Florida. I'm fashion and beauty obsessed, and have recently discovered my inner domestic diva extraordinaire. I'm a wannabe chef, decorating addict, and trying desperately to be as crafty as possible---albeit only with a glue gun. I'm hopelessly in love with my fiance, and all things sparkly and feathery. Despite the glittery exterior, I'm a total hippie on the inside. When I'm not making up pretty faces, I love doing what I can to help people, animals, and the environment. Someday the FI and I will change the world, but first we're tackling our modern-vintage-Marie-Antoinette-meets-Alice-in-Wonderland inspired wedding. I just can't wait to be Mrs. Rainbow!
About Mrs. Rainbow

It’s officially March, and we all know what that means—check in time! We’ve now got exactly 7 months until the wedding, and let me just say, this month was pretty much a fail month. That’s right, I’ve been one slackin’ ass bee.

I’m a bit disappointed in myself that I slacked off so badly this month, but—although I don’t like to make excuses—it has been an exceptionally difficult month for Mr. Rainbow and me. Let me explain.

In the past, I’ve never had issues with my weight. It always stayed pretty much the same, and if I wanted to lose a few pounds, it was never too difficult for me. But a little while ago, I started gaining weight, quickly and seemingly uncontrollably, and the worst part was that no matter what I did, it just wouldn’t come off. I know my body, and I know how it works, so I had a funny feeling that there was something medically wrong with me, but no one would believe me, and I had no health insurance to get my suspicions confirmed.

That was until this month.

I got private health insurance a few months back, and finally got a doctor’s appointment on the 2nd of February. Needless to say, my suspicions were confirmed and I was diagnosed with a shitty, albeit fortunately non life-threatening, illness. It’s got a slew of crappy symptoms, one of them being that it’s exceptionally easy to gain weight, but exceptionally difficult to lose it. Fabulous, just what I need before our wedding. Apparently it’s just something you’re born with, it can be controlled through medication, but it can never be cured. Fun, right?

Needless to say, I think I was depressed for a solid 2 weeks. I didn’t want to speak to anyone, do anything, go anywhere. Every time I tried to explain anything about the illness or how I was feeling to my family, I would just sob. The thought that this thing doesn’t just “go away” and that, at the ripe age of 22, I’ll basically have a lifelong battle with my weight and will have to be on meds for the rest of my life really killed my will to do anything. Add that to the stress of wedding planning and recent family drama and I was basically down for the count for the rest of the month.

Anyway, I don’t want to turn this into a pity party, so here we go! I present to you, my chart for the month!

Month 2- March 1, 2010:

  • Pounds lost this month: 2
  • Pounds lost in total: 9
  • How many days I exercised this month: 7
  • How many days I didn’t exercise this month: 21
  • How many times I “cheated” on my diet: 5 (ack, almost as many days as I worked out!)
  • How I’m fitting in my dress: Eh, getting there
  • How I’m feeling: Crappy, but motivated to do better this month!
  • Notes: Jillian Michaels is starting to annoy me, but her workouts are so awesome I’ll just have to deal with it. Because I slacked off, I’m going to keep doing level 2 until next month. I tried Carmen Electra’s Aerobic Striptease, it was fun, but not much of a work out. It’ll probably be better at a more difficult level.

So, yes, I only worked out 7 out of 28 days. Bad Rainbow! Major suckage. On the bright side, I lost 2 pounds from doing the bare minimum, so that’s good. My goal was 5 pounds a month, so add that to the 7 from last month and I’m still pretty much on track. At least that’s what I keep telling myself. Bringing Sexy Back, Rainbow Style: Month 2 : wedding diet fitness tampa Silly silly And because I know you’re curious, my cheats:

Japanese Teppanyaki - Mr. Rainbow and I went for chop-chop (that’s what I call it) on Valentine’s Day. I wouldn’t generally consider it a cheat because the food isn’t all that bad, but just based on the sheer amount of food they give you, it’s definitely cheating.

Baskin Robbins Peanut Butter Chocolate Ice Cream- Holy Crap. If I have a guilty pleasure, this is it. It reminds me of being a child in Washington State and my mom taking me to Baskin Robbins in her police car (yes, my mom was a cop - not a traffic cop, a hardcore cop). Comfort food at its yummiest.

As you see, this was not exactly my finest hour, but what can we do but move on? Which is exactly what I intend to do. This month will be better, you’ll see.

Have you ever been thrown off your game by some unexpected circumstances? How did you deal with it? How’s your resolution coming along?

I actually think I have the same illness…

I won’t say what it is on here, but I’m on medication for it (and have been for the past year) and trust me, it gets A LOT better. I lost ten pounds in two months and I have more energy than ever. It’s not something that will ever go away, but it’s manageable.

As for the rest? I’m working out two or three times a week, but I really need to step it up. My wedding is in September and I want to be totally in shape by then.

Good luck to you!

I’m so sorry to hear about your illness.

Um, I think we can be food friends b/c everything you have on this post are my favorite foods. It’s really not helping this whole diet thing.

I’m sorry to hear about your illness but I’m glad you were able to see a doctor about it. I wouldn’t think of those items as “cheats”–just “treats,” which means a necessary, albeit occasional, part of anyone’s diet!

Hugs, Rainbow. I’m sorry about the illness, but I’m glad you’re in a better mindset about it now.

One word of advice for the Jillian workouts: put her on MUTE and just follow along with the movements while listening to your ipod or stereo. So, so, so much better than listening to her say things like “they don’t even cheat they’re so tough.” UGH PUKE.

@Miss Pug: I hear you about the peanut butter chocolate ice cream- I don’t think there’s a better flavor combo than pb & chocolate.
@denverbirdlet: Oh god, my mom used to worked for the Girl Scouts HQ so I got free Girl Scout cookies for a while. Delicious, but horrible for you! lol
@Miss Lace: We can totally be food friends. I always tell people that I like “man food”. I’m not a salad kinda girl, give me a steak anyday.

I don’t know if this is possible for you - but I’ve found that the best way for me to work out with the Shred is to have ‘real’ TV to watch with Jillian muted for directions. I play the DVD off my laptop, prop the laptop up in front of my TV and there we go.
Also, I watch “Say Yes to the Dress” on TIVO alot while exercising - good inspiration to do the workout hard.
Good luck!

Rainbow, you can actually go to the options part of the menu screen on the Shred and select to do the workout with just the music and not Jillian’s instructions. I got tired of hearing her over and over again so that’s what I did - it made it so much better, lol

Rainbow, sorry to hear about being sick. I am assuming on what sickness, and I can tell you that I have it too, and although it sucks the meds will make it a little easier when they get them balanced. Good luck!

I think I have the same thing. I found out about 3 yrs ago. I was a sobbing mess the first 1.5 month. I felt ashamed, like there was something broken in me.

My advice to you is to keep telling yourself to get over it. Tell yourself that life goes on. I was engaged at the time. Luckily, my fiance was supportive and still wanted to marry me. You make the choice in how you want to live your life. It took me a year to really get over it.

In terms of weight, in a year, I went up 4 dress sizes, that’s +8 to whatever size you are since sizes are every other number. After the meds, I’ve been able to get down 2 sizes (-4.) So you can lose weight, you just have to work extremely hard at it.

It’s difficult. At times you feel like people think you overreacting or think you are crazy. I had some people say it was my eating habits, not an illness. I hate when someone says I know so-and-so has it and everything was alright.

Here’s what I always wanted to hear: The illness sucks. It’s real. It’s tough. And you need to work hard to over come it. Some people have it mildly, and let’s hope you are one of those people. I think it’s to your advantage to think positively, but anytime you want to talk/complain I’m here to listen.

Oh no! So sorry to hear about your illness. Bummer. Glad it’s not life-threatening, though the easy weight gain would drive me crazy as well.

I’m sorry for everything you’re going through. But barely working out and still losing 2 pounds is pretty spectacular!!

Of course you aren’t obligated to share your diagnosis with us… but it might really help someone who is going through the same thing, and maybe doesn’t have as good a doctor as you do. If you have what I think you have, my sister had the same problem, but in the opposite direction… LOSING unhealthy, scary amounts of weight. And she unfortunately didn’t get a correct diagnosis right away… her health declined a lot before they figured it out. Just a thought!

Losing weight is hard for anyone, bravo to you for facing it head-on despite your illness. You’ll get there, Rainbow, just one step at a time.
