I love reading, shopping, wine, reuniting with college friends that are scattered across the country, reality TV, trying out new recipes, and attempting all the DIY projects that come along with wedding planning. About Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

My Diet Secret

March 3rd, 2010 @ 2:10 pm by Mrs. Frozen Yogurt

So, I’ve been good about keeping up with my JM workouts, but like many other brides, I’m always looking for anything else that will help me lose weight and look my best on my wedding day. It’s even better if this magic thing that helps me lose weight does not require a lot of effort or changes to my routine because, well, I’m lazy and like my routine. Recently, I learned about Yerba Mate tea.

My Diet Secret : wedding dallas diet Yerba Mate yerba-mate

Source

The tea is fair trade and contains 24 vitamins and minerals, 15 amino acids, lots of antioxidants and naturally occurring caffeine. Their website says that the tea:

  • Helps Stimulate Focus and Clarity
  • Boosts Physical Energy
  • Is Traditionally Used to Support Weight Loss Programs that Include a Balanced Diet and Exercise
  • Aids Elimination
  • Contains Antioxidants
  • Fights Bad Breath

All of these are great benefits for drinking the tea, but for me, the major benefit was the weight loss part. So, Yerba Mate has caffeine; less than coffee, but more than other teas. However, it’s never made me feel jittery, nor have I ever felt like I was crashing after the caffeine effects wear off. Also, it has been shown to increase metabolism and I think mine has increased, which is great because it has been notoriously slow my entire life no matter what I do. And, it is also supposed to help to decrease appetite. I haven’t noticed a huge difference in this but somehow I’ve lost weight. At my shower this past weekend I had several people ask me what I’ve been doing, and most of them had seen me since starting the JM workout, so I think it has to be the tea!

I’m sure you’re all wondering about the taste. To me, it’s really good. But, I don’t ever put sugar or anything sweet in my tea, so maybe I’m not the best person to ask. I’ve read that other people add Splenda or other no-calorie sweeteners to make the tea taste a little better, but I don’t think you need to do anything. I’ve even told several people at my office about it and they went out and bought it immediately after I gave them a sample pack. So it can’t be that bad, right?

And, it’s not too expensive either. If you can find it in its loose form, then that’s the cheapest route, but even in the tea bags it’s about $8/pack at my grocery store. To me, it’s so worth it. I am excited to keep using this and see what other health benefits come my way.

So, what are some of your diet secrets?

I’m glad you posted this - I’ve been hearing a lot about Yerba Mate lately but I didn’t know anyone who used it. Where do you get yours at?

I used that and really thought it was helpful, but then randomly got the stomach flu and haven’t been able to drink it since. I think it’s like those people who get really drunk…sick…and then can never drink that beverage again.

It’s been a couple years so it might be time to venture out again. I didn’t think it tasted bad either (from what I remember before the stomach flu).

Thanks for the idea!

Thanks for the suggestion! I’m a big tea drinker, so this would be really easy to do!

My secret is very similar to yours. I take a cup of nopalina, which is a flaxseed formula every morning, and it really helps boost up my metabolism. The taste to me isn’t that bad, and i’m very picky, but I must admit I take mine in some juice. Before my sister wedding I lost at least 5 lbs per month just by using this.

I’m trying to work out more, but as long as the weather remains terrible in NYC I am staying later at work and therefore not very motivated. I did stop drinking alcohol recently which definitely has made a difference! I also try to eat healthier dinners - normally I only control portion size so I never feel deprived, but it’s coming down to the wire now for the wedding so I’m actually focusing on eating healthy things. I don’t have any fancy tricks yet like the tea, but after reading this post I’mdefinitely going to try it! I also don’t like sweeteners in my tea so I think I will like the taste. Good for you, keep up the good work!!

There are a bunch of tea fans in my office, so we have a pretty extensive stock in our kitchen. There’s a box of this stuff (same brand as the image you posted) that’s been sitting there for months, but I always stick to my earl grey and haven’t tried it. Now I know what I’ll be drinking tomorrow!

I had several friends in college who had spent time in South America and had gotten in the habit of drinking yerba mate thereafter; it’s quite popular in Argentina for example and has some cultural associations. I’ve never heard it used for weight loss, if it works for you then that’s great.

How many cups a day do you drink??
Is it just in the regular tea aisle of the grocery store ?

It’s not really a secret . . . but . . . portion control! I try to turn every meal I eat into 2 meals by saving half for later. Sometimes, I eat that other half if I get hungry, but most times not. It’s free (it actually saves you money) and it works.

mmmmm I love this tea..I am a huge fan of the chocolate flavored one…and like you I don’t think it needs sugar..the funny thing is I bought it a couple years ago because it’s mate….my father being from Peru would always bring loose Mate home and brew it (now that stuff will have you buzzing) It’s super yummy apparently the Incans used it as an appetite suppressant as well, but pop says they also chewed coca leaves which I am sure added to it.

Mmm, mate. :) I’d highly recommend getting some in loose leaf form and getting a mate gourd for drinking it! It’s tasty and fun.
