About Mrs. Hot Wings

Suiting Up the Men: Attempt 1

March 3rd, 2010 @ 12:56 pm by Mrs. Hot Wings

Mr. Hot Wings has been in several weddings and didn’t like the idea of renting a tux that other people have worn before him and would need to be returned after the wedding. Instead, he really wanted to find suits that would cost approximately the same as renting a tux. He polled the Wingmen (I think I like that better than Groomsmen) and they all agreed. So, off we went.

Men’s Warehouse was our first stop. When we shopped online, Mr. Hot Wings liked this suit from Men’s Warehouse. With their buy 1 get 1 deal, it seemed worth the trip into the store.

Of course, this suit wasn’t available at the store. That would be too easy. But they did have one option that we liked with a tie option that matched our color scheme.

The problem with our trip was the service. The salesman that helped us was such a sleezeball. He would only show us 2 suits. One suit was a 3 button charcoal grey Hart Schaffner Marx that cost $600 on sale. It’s pictured below on the right side. He kept telling us that Obama only wears Hart Schaffner Marx suits and it’s great quality. That’s great, but cost was more important to us. We told him that we were looking for less expensive suits for our Wingmen. He finally shows us a gray pinstripe Jones New York 2 button suit that was on sale for $400 and is buy 1 get 1 free (shown on the left side of the picture). That would make the suits $200 each. Then, for every $500 we spend we get a $50 gift card. So it would make sense to buy all the suits together and get the gift cards, and then we could buy the Wingmens’ ties there. Ties were also buy 1 get 1 free, and $20. That’s $10 for silk ties! And, they had a perfect peacock blue tie (see above picture).

Now, it all sounds pretty great right?

I would have been totally happy, except the guy kept saying things like “you have to buy it soon because the sale is not going to be forever” and “you have to do it with me only, because I’m giving you a personal deal.” And look what he made Mr. Hot Wings do in the picture. I don’t know what it means, but Mr. Hot Wings didn’t like it. He’s too nice to say no. So, I cut the heads off the picture to make him happy.

All I have to say is… the Hot Wings are no fools. I would have been happy to just check it off my list and move on because it was the right price, but the salesman left a bad taste in my mouth.

So what did I do, you ask? I went to Macy’s and Nordstrom Rack. Nordstrom Rack had some great deals on gray suits for the same $600 for Hugo Boss Suits. That would work real nice for Mr. Hot Wings. Macy’s also had Calvin Kleins for $500 AND… they are buy 1 get 1 FREE! I would not have thought of this option had the Men’s Warehouse guy not been dumb to us. Score! Macy’s was our next stop.

In the end, we liked the Jones New York suit because it was the right color and price. The more expensive suit is nice, but a little too dark in color.

Did you forgo any vendors because of how they treated you?

Ooh, we are going to visit Men’s Wearhouse this weekend, but…now maybe it’s not such a good idea anymore! Thanks for the tip. We’ll make sure we don’t get pushed around!

We went to Men’s Wearhouse too. I had a very similar experience and found all the salesmen rude and pushy. We ended up going with Jos A Banks, they have amazing sales going on routinely, so we waited till they had a buy one, get the 2nd for $100, and 3rd for free sale. Plus the quality completely stood out from MW.

Ugh, Men’s Warehouse was our least favorite vendor. We paid for all of the guys’ tuxes, but when they each went in to get their measurements, MW made them pay the deposit again. It was a pain to get it straightened out.

i definitely don’t like making big purchases from people who creep me out. sometimes i do it anyway because of necessity, but i totally feel you on not liking the guy. maybe if you go back for the jones suit he won’t be there?

Ugh - I hate sleezy sales people like that!!! My FI got his suit at Men’s Warehouse and we actually had a really good experience there. I’m sure different stores with different staff can bring a full spectrum of experiences. It’s always smart to shop around.

What IS he doing in the picture? What does it mean?? I’m sorry you got crappy treatment from that sleazeball, but it does make for a funny story! Love the term “Wingmen” too!

Sorry you had a bad experience. We went to Men’s Warehouse to buy my boyfriend a suit and actually had a really good experience. Our salesman was knowledgeable and very helpful with the whole alterations process. I guess it just depends on who you get.

We actually had a pretty good experience at Men’s Wearhouse, but I totally agree that you should only go with someone who provides good service!

I got a little terrified when, after I had told our DJ company that we wanted to go with them, the manager putting together our contract kept gushing about what a fabulous deal our DJ (his employee) had offered us and how lucky we were to get away with it. Sorry, why are you acting like you’re trying to sell me a car that took a swim in a lake, when I already told you I want to book your company? I feel a lot better now having done a million extra miles of research since then, confirming from various brides that this DJ does a fantastic job at weddings, but still, why did the manager feel the need to act that way on the phone? Sleazy indeed.

My fiance, his groomsmen, and our dads all got suits at Men’s Warehouse and we had a great experience there. We picked out a dark gray Michael Kors suit that we really liked right away. We were able to get a buy one, get one deal and the gift cards. All the guys are happy and are really glad to have a new suit to keep rather than rent tuxes that would have cost at least $170. The people at Men’s Warehouse were great, they even helped us to coordinate getting suits to Colorado and Ohio for a GM and my dad- of course my picky fiance wanted all the suits shipped to the store near his place in IN so he could make sure they were all the same color (never knew a guy would care so much about stuff like this until I met him), then the IN store shipped them for free for us! I would recommend Men’s Warehouse (at least the one in South Bend, IN), we had a great experience and have never dealt with pushy salesmen there.

i like how he tried to use obama as a selling method. as if that would make it more appealing. obama can afford that stuff!

We met with several florists and there was on we immediately rejected because their personalities completely turned us off. Doesn’t matter that their prices were a smidge cheaper, I couldn’t bear to deal with them. Plus their shop was filled with fake flowers!

Oh that’s too bad, we are considering Men’s Wearhouse for Mr. Starfish’s suits. I hope they have better service. If I were in your shoes, I would have gone somewhere else too.

I’ve had good preliminary experience at one of the local MWs. Don’t know what we’re doing for sure yet. Sorry it was so horrible! And yes, I would absolutely not use a vendor if the salesperson left a bad taste in my mouth. I hate pushy salespeople.

I’m glad you walked away from that salesperson! Looking forward to see what the Wingmen (love the term!) got eventually.

We had a bad experience at Men’s Warehouse too! The staff was not very friendly or helpful.

We were actually going to buy the suits from Men’s Warehouse because of the buy 1 get 1 deal. We paid, we ordered, and 3 weeks later the suits still were not in! We cancelled the order and went elsewhere, that also happened to have nicer suits and the buy 1 get 1 deal, PLUS free shirts and ties.
